SAN ANDREAS – Three San Andreas residents are in jail after a two-week operation in which federal and local investigators uncovered a hoard of weapons scattered across three counties that included several illegal military-style guns and a bomb designed to disperse a cyanide powder.
Ronald LeRoy Applegate, 60, is being held on $270,000 bail on a variety of weapons and drug charges. Investigators said in a written statement that he was the one in possession of weapons found in a storage locker in Angels Camp and at a residence in Valley Springs.

U.S. District Judge A. Joe Fish on Wednesday instructed jurors in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial to restart deliberations after he dismissed one of them and replaced him with an alternate.
The judge did not publicly state a reason for the swap-out, which was announced at a short, mid-afternoon hearing Wednesday in front of attorneys. Jurors continued their closed-door sessions through the end of the day Wednesday, the fourth full day of deliberations since arguments in the two-month-long case ended a week ago. Two alternates remain, and deliberations will resume Thursday.

The Democratic governor of Virginia, Timothy M. Kaine, has appointed Dr. Esam Omeish to the Virginia Commission on Immigration: Valley delegate challenges Kaine appointee to immigration panel.
Esam Omeish is a name LGF readers may recognize; he’s the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood’s primary front group in the United States, the Muslim American Society. A local delegate has asked Democratic Gov. Timothy M. Kaine to re-think his appointment of the head of the Virginia-based Muslim American Society to the Virginia Commission on Immigration.

Dhaka - A Senegalese prayer leader expelled from Italy in 2003 for "disturbance to public order and endangering state security" has launched a scathing attack against an Adnkronos International (AKI) journalist as well journalists from two leading Italian dailies.
On his new website, the imam Qader Fadlalla Mamour , using the alias Abu Sayyaf ('Sword of God'), harshly criticises reporting by AKI's Hamza Boccolini, La Repubblica's Vittorio Zucconi and Corriere della Sera's Guido Olimpico on the last videos released earlier this month by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Mamour's criticisms appear alongside the first full text translated into Italian of the two new messages released by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden this month. The first, a video issued on 7 September urges Americans to convert to Islam to stop the war in Iraq. The second, an audiotape released on 20 September, calls on Pakistan to overthrow its president Gen. Pervez Musharraf. Mamour, who currently lives in Senegal, especially attacks an analysis written by Boccolini on 8 September that focuses on doubts expressed by some Jihadist forums over the authenticity of bin-Laden's 8 Sept. video. Mamour's commentary on his new website also contains a warning to Italy of a document entitled 'It's Italy's turn' threatening future terror attacks against the country.

'Alms could be funding al-Qaeda' claims US

Algeria - US diplomats fears alms for the poor given by the Muslim faithful during the holy month of Ramadan, could be being used to finance the activities of al-Qaeda in North Africa, pan-Arab daily al-Quds al-Arabi reports.
A US government delegation in recent days has conveyed these concerns during a meeting with Algeria's religious affairs minister, Bouabdullah Ghulamallah, the paper says. But Ghalamallah reportedly gave the delegation a frosty reception, saying that it is down to Muslims to decide who they give their 'Zakat' (Arabic for alms) to - not his ministry. 'Zakat' is one of the pillars of Islam, i.e. a religious obligation for Muslims.
Ghalamallah also turned down a request by the US delegation for a 'technical' task-force to audit 'Zakat' funds handled by the religious affairs ministry, al-Quds al-Arabi quoted a ministry official as saying. The only agreement reportedly reached between Ghalamallah and the US delegation was to create a fund to provide interest-free loans to Algeria's poorest families. The loans will help the families set up small-scale business activities aimed at economic self-sufficiency.
It is estimated that several million dollars worth of 'Zakat' are collected in Algeria each year during Ramadan (which runs from mid-September to mid-October). Much of this money ends up in a religious affairs ministry current account, which channels it to projects aimed at helping the poor.

Panama Arrests 6 Syrians Who Tried to Enter Cockpit

On Tuesday, police at Panama City's Tocumen International Airport arrested six Syrian men traveling on Copa Airlines Flight 231 after other passengers feared "the suspects were going to storm the cockpit armed with cutlery," and told crew about it. (Go, Juan and Juanita Doe!)
According to Panama's National Police director, Rolando Mirones, the Syrians approached the cockpit "apparently with the intention of opening a door." Police Director Jose Ayu Prado issued a statement this morning stating that the Syrians had indeed "approached the cockpit door and tried to open it."
The Syrians say they approached the cockpit by mistake and that they were looking for the bathroom.
Also at issue on the Cuba-to-Panama flight was a missing knife. Reporter Juan Zamorano has more from Police Chief Mirones in a story for the Associated Press:
Copa Airlines crew simply notified authorities on the ground that a knife was missing after they served the meal in the first-class cabin, where the Syrians were sitting. He did not say whether the Syrians were suspected of taking the knife.
Mirones said the suspects "did not commit any violent acts inside the airplane, but they raised suspicions," adding: "That is why we are investigating."
The Syrians, ages 17 to 30, were on their way to Haiti and Jamaica via Panama.
The cockpit-door-mistaken-for-the-bathroom ruse has been used in other aviation security probes before, including one by a Saudi student traveling on a Southwest Airlines flight — before 9/11. This incident is listed in The 9/11 Commission Report as a dry run (the student was deported after 9/11). A similar ruse was more recently used in by three Egyptian nationals trying to get into the cockpit during a Prague-to-Oslo flight. Instead of looking for the bathroom, these Egyptians claimed they were looking "to buy some chewing gum." Czech Intelligence Agency, BIS, wrote in its 2006 annual report that three “Egyptians [were] suspected of [taking part] in the preparation of a terrorist attack on a civilian aircraft.”

Coalition Forces Kill 3, Detain 8 in Iraq Operations

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2007 – Coalition forces killed and detained several terrorists during operations today in central and northern Iraq.
— Southwest of Kirkuk, coalition forces targeted an al Qaeda leader who has been connected to numerous other members of the al Qaeda network. As coalition forces arrived at the target location, they were engaged by armed men inside a building. The ground force returned fire and killed three terrorists. Two suspected terrorists also were detained on site. During the operation, three buildings and a small cache of weapons and ammunition were safely destroyed to prevent their further use by terrorists.
— In an operation near Baghdad, coalition forces targeted an associate of the al Qaeda network operating in the southern belt around Baghdad. The targeted individual is believed to have knowledge of the movement of foreign terrorists and members of al Qaeda. Three suspected terrorists were detained on site.
— Coalition forces also detained three suspected terrorists during an operation south of Tikrit targeting an al Qaeda senior leader reported to be a key member in the terrorist illegal court system throughout the Salah Ad Din province.
“We continue to bring al Qaeda to justice with successful operations like these,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “In partnership with Iraqi security forces and the people of Iraq, we will bring to this country the security its citizens need.”
Also today, coalition forces captured an Iraqi “special groups” member wanted for suspected terrorist activity and detained three others during operations in Baghdad. Intelligence reports indicate the targeted man is linked to logistics network facilitators and has ties to numerous criminals. He is reported to be a logistics expert involved in the movement of weapons used against Iraqi and coalition security forces. The ground force detained three other suspects on site without incident.
“‘Special groups’ members continue to remain intent on disrupting the growth and development of the government of Iraq,” said Army Maj. Brad Leighton, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “We are in pursuit and will not allow them to succeed.”
In other recent operations:
— Coalition forces killed three terrorists and detained two other suspected terrorists during operations targeting al Qaeda leaders in Musayyib yesterday. Following the operation, ground forces found weapons, including one suicide vest, and safely destroyed them on site.
— Scouts from 8th Iraqi Army Division confiscated and destroyed a large weapons cache following an operation yesterday in Diwaniyah. The forces confiscated the following materials: three rocket-propelled-grenade rounds, three explosively formed penetrators, a shaped charge for an improvised explosive device, 12 81 mm Iranian mortars, detonator cords, batteries, ammunition, sniper rifle parts and magazines, a large amount of fuses, blasting caps, homemade firing devices and explosive primers, and a large amount of terrorist propaganda.
— Iraqi security forces with U.S. Special Forces advisors intercepted a vehicle carrying IED material during a traffic control point yesterday near Samarra. Forces set up the checkpoint outside Samarra to interdict a possible al Qaeda re-supply of bomb-making materials. As the sedan approached the traffic control point, it was observed pulling off on a side road about 500 meters away. The forces immediately approached the car and searched it, discovering 35 155 mm artillery rounds inside. After the vehicle was moved to a controlled area, an air strike was called in to destroy it.
— Soldiers from 2nd Iraqi Army Division detained two al Qaeda terrorist suspects Sept. 24 during a raid in the Jimissa Al-Jazeera village, near Qayyarah. One of the detained insurgents is believed to be responsible for rocket and IED attacks against Iraqi and U.S. forces, specifically a forward operating base in northern Iraq. In addition, two AK-47 assault rifles with ammunition were seized.
— Task Force Marne AH-64 Apache helicopters responded to an IED strike Sept. 24, killing the four extremist militants responsible. The device struck the 82nd Support Brigade, attached to 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, while the unit was traveling south on a main thoroughfare to and from Baghdad. Aerial surveillance observed the four militants in a nearby canal moments before the IED detonated. The Apaches engaged and killed the militants. Forces also found AK-47 assault rifles and ammunition at their location.
— Iraqi special operations forces detained a suspected criminal leader during an operation Sept. 23 in western Baghdad targeting rogue criminal elements. The suspect is a leader of a criminal element that operates out of the Ghazaliyah area. His group is responsible for conducting attacks on coalition forces using IEDs. They also are linked to kidnappings and murders of local residents.
— Iraqi special operations forces detained two suspected al Qaeda terrorists Sept. 23 during an operation to disrupt terrorist networks on the southern outskirts of Baghdad. The primary suspects are members of a cell that kidnaps local residents and attacks Iraqi and coalition forces with IEDs. Three other suspicious individuals who were present during the operation were also detained for questioning. The forces also seized an AK-47 assault rifle, a pistol, a knife and a pistol belt.
In other news, Iraqi special operations forces conducted an operation yesterday designed to apprehend individuals suspected in the kidnapping and murder of the former Iraqi Military Academy commandant, Maj. Gen. Imad, and with the kidnapping of the current commandant, Brig. Gen. Hassan, who was subsequently released.
“Ministry of Defense action against these criminals demonstrates that the government of Iraqi is dedicated to establishing security and defeating criminal elements wherever they are in the country,” said Staff Maj. Gen. Mohammed al-Askari, a Ministry of Defense spokesman. “Iraqi security forces are focused on eliminating criminals from their ranks.”

Hundreds of Taliban Fighters Killed During Afghanistan Battles

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2007 – Members of the 205th Afghan National Army Corps advised by coalition forces killed more than 100 insurgents during combat in Afghanistan’s Helmand province today.
The combined force was patrolling near Regay village to clear the area of extremist Taliban fighters. Several dozen insurgents attacked the convoy from an extensive trench system and several compounds with small arms, machine guns, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. Taliban fighters reinforced their fighting positions from the village of Musa Qalah throughout the daylong battle.
Coalition aircraft and artillery engaged the Taliban positions. The initial estimate by the ground force commander assessed that more than 100 insurgents were killed in the engagement.
“Afghan national security forces and their coalition partners continue to hunt down the enemies of peace and stability in Helmand province,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman. “The end is near for the Taliban that believe Musa Qalah is safe from Islamic Republic of Afghanistan forces. This combined operation is just one more step to securing the Musa Qalah area of the Helmand province.”
In operations last night, elements of 1st Brigade, 205th Afghan National Army Corps, advised by coalition forces made contact with a large group of insurgents prior to an attempted ambush while conducting a combat patrol near Kakrak village in Oruzgan province.
The combined patrol was northeast of Deh Rawood, in the same general area where six days ago more than three dozen insurgents were killed as they prepared an ambush.
The Afghan-led patrol attacked the Taliban with small-arms and crew-served-weapons fire. Soon after the attack against the entrenched insurgents began, the patrol observed more enemy reinforcements moving into the Taliban fighting positions. More than 80 Taliban fighters battled with Afghan forces throughout the engagement.
The insurgents continued to attack the patrol with small-arms, machine-gun, rocket-propelled-grenade and mortar fire from multiple bunkers near Kakrak village during the six-hour battle.
Precision-guided munitions used to attack the Taliban positions killed more than 65 insurgents.
“As with our forces near Musa Qalah, this operation is intended to deny the enemies of peace the use of Deh Rawood as a safe haven,” Belcher said. “Much like last week’s engagement, last night’s overwhelming victory by (Afghan troops) against the extremists is one more example of this strategy to secure a stable and safe living area for the residents of Uruzgan province.”
