The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. MND-C Apache crews destroy al-Qaeda safehouse

ARAB JABOUR, Iraq – Task Force Marne attack helicopter crews destroyed an al-Qaeda safe house in Arab Jabour Sept. 2.

Soldiers of Company B, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, were told by local concerned citizens that al –Qaeda was killing civilians behind the Qhurfar Mosque. The family of a man killed by al-Qaeda reported the insurgents went to a nearby house.

An air weapons team was called and engaged the house in two separate runs. A total of two hellfire missiles, seven rockets and one burst of .50 cal fire were expended on the house.

The mosque incurred no damage.

Iraqi Army, U.S. Special Forces detain AQI leaders near Kirkuk

TAJI, Iraq – Iraqi Army Scouts, with U.S. Special Forces as advisers, detained the suspected al Qaeda in Iraq leader of the Old Za’ab Village during a driven raid Sept. 3 near Kirkuk.

The suspected leader’s cell includes former Ba’ath Party, 1920th Revolutionary Brigade, Islamic State of Iraq, New Ba’ath Party and El-Huk Brigade members. Additionally, his group is suspected of orchestrating attacks in Ninewa, Salah ah Din and At’ Tamim provinces.

During an earlier operation Sept. 1 in Za’ab, Scouts were able to detain the leader’s deputy, a wanted member of the former Ba’ath Party. In addition, the village is believed to be a safe haven and planning node for synchronization of al Qaeda in Iraq forces.

More than a half dozen propane tanks and wires, 125,000 Iraqi Dinar, and assorted documents were seized during these operations.

No Iraqi or U.S. Forces were injured during this operation.

“Small Explosive Device Set Off Outside Manhattan Apartment Building”
Tuesday, September 04, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “NEW YORK — A small explosive device was set off in front of an apartment building, causing damage to a van parked outside and forcing the evacuation of residents, police said Tuesday.

The building on West 29th Street and Eigthth Avenue was undamaged after the device blew up at about 1:30 a.m., police said. No one was injured in the blast.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Sheriff’s Detective Keith Letarski, the commander of the Bomb Squad, said a battery pack and firing wire were used to rig the pipe bombs so that they could be detonated from 15 to 20 feet away.

“This was not a firecracker,” Kralik said.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Detective Sgt. Steven Huff of the state Park Police said it appeared the teens were experimenting with the bombs. The police were looking at a cell phone to see if it had video of the incident, and they were investigating where the explosive powder was obtained.”

Lebanon says 222 militants killed in camp battle

Lebanon’s defense minister said on Tuesday the army killed at least 222 al Qaeda-inspired militants in a 15-week battle at a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon.

Defense Minister Elias al-Murr also said 202 militants were captured in the battles while an unknown number were buried in mass graves inside the largely destroyed camp.The army finally took control of the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp on Sunday after more than three months of fierce battles, including air, sea and land bombardment against the entrenched Fatah al-Islam militants. That reminds me: Last week we had major storms through the area, we lost power intermittantly throughout the storm. The morning after a particularly spectacular night of thunder and lightning, I turned on my computer and the date on the bottom right corner of the screen had reset to: September 10, 2001.

Danish Police Hold 8 Terrorism Suspects in Copenhagen (Update2)

Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) — Danish police arrested eight ``militant Islamists’’ with alleged al-Qaeda links on suspicion of plotting a ``major’’ attack.

Police held the men, whose ages are between 19 and 29, in the Copenhagen area today, Jakob Scharf, head of the Security Intelligence Service, told a news conference in the capital.

``With the arrests, we’ve prevented a major act of terrorism,’’ Scharf said. The suspects are ``militant Islamists with international connections including ties to al-Qaeda.’’ ......
