I personally favor leverguns chambered for pistol cartridges like the .44 Mag, .45 Colt and .357 Magnum. The ballistics out of the longer barrels is phenomenal and they are great companion pieces for handguns. I,ve got a lever that shoots the .454 (and of course the .45 as well). I love that gun. With heavy .454 loads (Buffalo Bore ammo) it could take a Cape Buff!

I don't own any Savage rifles presently, but I'm real familiar with the old 110, and it and the new Savages are in my opinion the best value for the money these days (Somewhat like Ruger used to be). I'll vouch for the accuracy of the 111F. A friend of mine owns one and it shoots superbly.
With regard to the 30-06 cartridge, I think Jeff Coopers daughter Lindy put it best in a verse she penned "...there ain't many things a man can't fix, with 700 dollars and a 30-06." It and the .308 are my favorites, and are both superb general purpose rounds.

I agree with all you said but the point they are making is what the most available ammo will be in a conflict that may drag on for several years.
No more ammo would be being produced so they went with what in now on the shelves and in homes.
In the south you can get 30/30 ammo at the quik-mart or grocery store.

new Savages are in my opinion the best value for the money these days I'll agree with that and if you want to go without the accutrigger get the Stevens. They are just Savages old machines for a lot less.

"...it could take a Cape Buff!"That it will, and it will keep the bugs off the porch light during the off-season. What a hammer.

"I agree with all you said but the point they are making is what the most available ammo will be in a conflict that may drag on for several years."True enough Beagle. I've handloaded for the past three decades, and I haven't shot a store-bought round for a long time. My advice to anybody who hasn't laid in a supply (particularly rimfire rounds that can't be reloaded) should do so...fast. Handloaders should think about primers.

If you are fond of the 30/06 and you like the big bore boomers, you should get a good 35 Whelen to play with.
Its just a standard 30/06 case necked up for .358 bullets.
It will kill anything that walks the earth and ammo is cheap to reload.

That means were still 10 guns short for every 100 people. It's worse than it sounds because a lot of us are carrying the weight for others. I'll bet it comes out to 3 or 4 in 10 households that own guns.

Looking at it that way, I’d be a 4.0 - something that sure never happened in college.

Bump. One guy who owns 100 guns in a population of a hundred people should not translation into every member of that population having a gun.

What a hammer.18 inch ported blued barrel with Hi Viz sights and of course it came with a healthy recoil pad. :)
Real handy gun that can be loaded up (.454) or down (.45 cowboys) as the occasion calls for it.
With the .45 cowboys it makes a great "home" gun.

"If you are fond of the 30/06 and you like the big bore boomers, you should get a good 35 Whelen to play with."The 35 Whelen is a great round but strictly for you sane people. I fireform 06 cases and load them as 375 Whelen Improved.
I took a Ruger No. 1 Tropical that a case-head separation flame-cut the chamber of and had a riflemaker rebarrel it for that round. I also had him put mounts forward on the barrel to accomodate a Leupold Scout Scope.
Other than the initial pain in the ass of developing a wildcat load, it's a great rig.
