Girly men are perfect partners, say women

Women searching for the perfect partner avoid macho men in favour of feminine-looking types whom they see as more committed and better parents, research has found.

Jools Oliver with husband Jamie

Men with masculine features, such as a square jaw, larger nose or smaller eyes were perceived to be less faithful, more detached and worse fathers. Those with fuller lips and wide eyes were seen as being more caring, nurturing and less likely to stray.

Psychologists from Durham and St Andrews Universities asked more than 400 people to look at pictures of male faces that were digitally altered to look more masculine or feminine. They were then asked to predict personality traits, such as sexual behaviour and parenting skills, based on the images.

The results, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, revealed that as well as preferring more feminine faces, participants chose healthier ones - such as those with better complexions - as more representative of positive traits, while older faces were preferred over younger ones.

And they could answer some questions when it comes to celebrity pairings. The jazz singer Michael Buble's round cheeks and eyes may indicate that his girlfriend, the Devil Wears Prada actress Emily Blunt, is looking to settle down. The actress Gwyneth Paltrow's choice of the scruffy Coldplay singer Chris Martin could be explained by his big blue eyes and bee-stung lips.

The chef Jamie Oliver's button nose and baby face may show that his wife, Jools, was spot on when she chose to start a family with him - not only does he seem a model father but he has also taken charge of the eating habits of others' children as well.

One of the authors of the report, Prof David Perrett, from St Andrews University, said a healthy face can override "negative" masculine features to make men more appealing. This would explain why the singer Charlotte Church chose the rugged Welsh rugby player Gavin Henson to father her child.

"Our research also found that it is men's health that conveys all-round good qualities for partnership and personality," he said.

The study, supported by the Medical Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council, backs up research of masculinity and personality perceptions and could help relationship counsellors and psychologists.

The lead author, Dr Lynda Boothroyd, a Durham University psychology lecturer, said: "This research shows a high amount of agreement between women about what they see, personality wise, when asked to 'judge a book by its cover'.

"They may well use that impression of someone to decide whether or not to engage with that person. That decision-making process all depends on what a woman is looking for in a relationship at that time of her life."

“Jools”? Never seen that name before. An attempt to “feminize” Jules?

I have to ask — what did you name the 4th child?

Keep in touch with us if you can while over in the sandbox, and we’ll keep the lights on for you. We’ll keep you and your family in our prayers while you’re over there. Btw, what class are you? We’ll drink one for you at Army/Navy! :)

I had never heard of Jamie Oliver before reading this article; but he does not appear especially feminine in the photograph. Am I missing something?

I give Richard Simmons credit for smacking a guy around in an airport for hassling him for no just cause. Imagine being the guy of whom it could be said that Richard Simmons kicked his rear.

Aislinn - Is that a male, female, or an inbetweener name?

Female - pronounced "Ah" "Is" "Linn". Probably a Southern Alabama girl who moved to London and "gentrified" herself, a la Madonna, et al. /grin

“What a bunch of anti-male PC crap.”

You are spot on. I can’t remember which movie this was from, but,

“I hearken back to the day when men were men and the women were glad of it.”

If a girl doesn’t want a manly man for a partner, then I don’t want her.

"What kind of people name their male children “jamie” and other such names in the first place??????"

Well, Jools and Jamie named their children:

1. Daisy Boo
2. Poppy Honey

I'm not kidding you.

I wouldn’t give those names to a dog. What were they smoking when they did that?

The study I remember said women are more attracted to the feminine type UNTIL they are ovulating. Then they are more attracted to the masculine type.

The girly-man is good enough to raise the kid but not to make it.

Having just nearly gotten married to one of those types this summer, I can attest to this. And I kissed her arse pretty good. It all came down her having to have total control, to the point where she basically told me I was her bitch. It was over about a week later, two weeks before the wedding.

Now she is with her former, er, sex buddy. Wouldn’t call him a boyfriend. He’s pretty much a short, dumpy lump of clay that will do whatever she says to get laid, but will never commit. BUT, she is in total control. Every time I see her at work she looks less and less happy, and keeps him more and more at arms length.

I like this type of man, as long as he is not on Broke Back Mountain.

My husband is much like the man in the picture. I like the rugged cowboy look myself.

“I’m Still A Guy”
By Brad Paisley

When you see a deer you see Bambi
And I see antlers up on the wall
When you see a lake you think picnic
And I see a large mouth up under that log
You’re probably thinking that you’re going to change me
In some ways well maybe you might
Scrub me down, dress me up but remember no matter what
I’m still a guy

When you see a priceless French painting
I see a drunk, naked girl
You think that riding a wild bull sounds crazy
And I’d like to give it a whirl
Well love makes a man do some things he ain’t proud of
And in a weak moment I might walk your sissy dog, hold your purse at the mall
But remember, I’m still a guy

I’ll pour out my heart
Hold your hand in the car
Write a love song that makes you cry
Then turn right around knock some jerk to the ground
‘Cause he copped a feel as you walked by

I can hear you now talking to your friends
Saying, “Yeah girls he’s come a long way”
From dragging his knuckles and carrying a club
And building a fire in a cave

But when you say a backrub means only a backrub
Then you swat my hand when I try
Well, what can I say at the end of the day
Honey, I’m still a guy

I’ll pour out my heart
Hold your hand in the car
Write a love song that makes you cry
Then turn right around knock some jerk to the ground
‘Cause he copped a feel as you walked by

These days there’s dudes getting facials
Manicured, waxed and botoxed
With deep spray-on tans and creamy lotiony hands
You can’t grip a tacklebox

With all of these men lining up to get neutered
Getting out of being feminized
I don’t highlight my hair
I’ve still got a pair
Yeah honey, I’m still a guy

Oh my eyebrows ain’t plucked
There’s a gun in my truck
Oh thank God, I’m still a guy

Real women want real men.. not metrosexuals. Stories like this make me laugh because they are so bogus.

Ha - sure they go looking for the girly man to settle down with, but only after they've been had by every macho guy who would care to.
