This morning only a couple of minutes before 5am, I was surfing around when I came upon Fox News. Bill O'Reilly was closing out his show with him reading off a few viewers emails and him giving a small response to each one. One of them defended FreeRepublic, saying that doing a search, Daily Kos had thousands of certain cuss words, and FR had none. O'Reilly's response to that was: "FreeRepublic Needs A Monitor. It Has None." (And then he moved on to another email)
"..Alan Novak, Wichita, KS: "Comparing the Free Republic to the Daily Kos, I searched the F-word. Daily Kos, almost seven thousand mentions. Free Republic, none.""
“What good would more monitors do when O’Reilly’s people search for strings of characters with no regard of context, for example a poster might mention Cushitic as an Afro-Asiatic language — O’Reilly complains of four letter words on FR. Good example of that is the O’Reilly charge of “hate” when his people found the string of characters, “I hate blacks” on FR. Never mind that it was a substring of a column title (”Why I Hate Blacks”) in a San Francisco Asian publication. The FR thread was discussing the column and its author. Fox News John Gibson interviewed the author, cannot it be said that Fox News is a “hate” organization? Go figure.” 201 posted on 08/03/2007 7:21:57 AM PDT by WilliamofCarmichael
To the extent Bill’s comment arose out of something like that described in post 201 then Bill’s investigative and validation skills are wanting. While this does not reflect well on him it is miles short of indicating that he is intellectually compromised.
The test therefore is whether he would repeat said comment and whether, should the opportunity present itself, he would clarify said comment after realising his mistake born out of inaccurate information itself the result of improper investigative techniques.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Yes....BO boobooed. And the booboo is a much bigger one than all previous BO booboos before it.
Imagine if we had an new law establishing journalistic malpractice.
Eliminate the damage issue. Sensationalistic and deceptive reporting would be subject to scrutiny by the courts without regard to actual damage.
Well for me the test is not just that he would acknowledge his mistake. It is also about his investigative skills.
How many other things has he investigated and gotten totally wrong.
I doubt he will ever stand up and acknowledge he shouldn’t have just used FR as an example of an internet hate site.
Also I never thought he would be an advocate of making new laws to censure/police the freedom of speech on sites such as this.
I'm not. I doubt Bill does any of his own internet research. He's much too important to actually do any legwork himself you know. The peons do the research, and then he regurgitates what is provided him. He probably tells them what point he wants to make on a certain issue or topic, and then they set off to find ONLY what will support that point of view.
Hallmark is going to have to create a whole new line of “I hope I didn’t offend you” cards.
I thought the no swearing part was what made us better?
HA! thanks LOL
I wonder if Bill and Eliot Spitzer are long-lost brothers...or sisters?
Excellent.
Imagine all the people living a life of freedom to say what they please as well as think. What a radical idea!
ROTFL!!
You forgot to tell him to keep his reply pithy.
No, I don't have a lisp.
I'm fairly certain that FR already has government monitors...if you catch my drift.
WHY? Please. He’s been criticized here. His ego simply cannot bear it. Why else? For BOR, it’s all about him.
Despite what Bor says, this place *is* moderated and if enough people feel like you’re only here to disrupt the website, they’ll draw it to the attention of the mods and they’ll ban you.
I say this from experience. I signed up and immediately posted a stupid thread (not just a comment, mind you...an entire thread...I do things big!) I was banned within a couple of minutes. Fortunately I had a friend that knew me well that intervened on my behalf and got me reinstated.
I kept my head way down after that and I'm so glad I did. I've shared the horror of 9/11 with Freepers. Together, we literally watched the shuttle turn into a bunch of falling stars. We celebrated the end of Saddam and his boys, along with a bunch of other bad guys and I look forward to the day we can celebrate the end of Osama. I witnessed Freepers take down a corrupt news anchor from another era with the truth.
So if you're not here to disrupt the site, keep your head down and stay a while. If you are only here to disrupt, you won't be here long.
True dat
When I first came on FR, I could only wonder how I ever lived before.
Life was so boring when I lived through the day without being offended or offending anyone.
FR offers the pleasure of being insulted at least once a day, right in the comfort of your own home! LOL
