We just bought the newly remastered Popeye DVD set. If you're a fan, you must see this. It has all the old black and white cartoons from 1933-1938. The clarity is so sharp and the sound is outstanding. Many of the toons have optional commentaries, which really add to the experience.
Strange thing, I guess, is that it's put out by Warner Bros. I didn't know they owned the rights! But bravo to whoever made this happen.
Alice, like all members of the Goon tribe, is approximately eight feet tall. She has huge feet, and arms that reach to her knees. Her nose overlaps her chin and is set between two blank, close-set eyes. Her head is totally bald and sits low between wide shoulders. She is completely hairless with the exception of her forearms, lower legs and midsection. In later appearances, Alice appeared wearing a skirt and flowered hat. When Alice spoke, her words would appear as a series of meaningless squiggles.

Oops. I just noticed it doesn't cover past 1938.
That sounds entertaining. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks for posting.
I bought a Popeye/vintage cartoon DVD out of a “cut-out” bin at Wal-Mart.
It is one of the absolute favorites of my young niece when she comes to visit.
Your post is very helpful because I’ve seen the adverts for it on TV.
You’ve convinced me that it’s worth the $$$ to add to my DVD library.
Remember that one like it was yesterday. Popeye was/is my favorite cartoon character ever. Might have to buy it.
Are these the ones with Brutus or Bluto?
“Popeye punches an Indian chief who then turns into Ghandi.”
That’s worth $50 right there.

I dated a chick like that in high school. She went on to become attorney general or something like that in fedgov. Creepy.
LOL, now now, BOR may be watching.
I always thought Bluto was better looking. I mean, Popeye is actually kinda deformed.I could never figure out what Olive saw in him.
In the Philly area we had Wee Willie Weber play Popeye cartoons. We would watch them before we went to school in the morning.
Captain Philadelphia was also cool to watch. He later became a sports newscaster for the Flyers (before Gene Hart)and later went to the west coast and I think became the Kings sportscaster. His real name was Stu Nayhand (sp)
LOL yeah I got one of those hats too. Don’t know what I’m going to do with it, but what the heck. Comic-Con is awesome.
That’s him!:) Thanks. I watched him back in the 70’s until I discovered that girls were more interesting than cartoons, but I’ll always have a soft spot for his show.
Or what either saw in Olive. What a skinny, boney skank!
and who fathered Swee’pea?!
Cool. I saw the commercial on TV. I love the black and white Popeyes.
