HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) – A woman screaming “you’re not a real conservative, sir” was removed by police from a welcoming reception for likely GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson Wednesday morning. A second protester was also taken from the room.
Houston police officers escorted the woman — as well as a man — from the hangar at Hobby Airport, where Thompson was shaking hands with a crowd of supporters. They were not arrested.
The woman questioned Thompson as he talked to reporters. She asked him why he was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and noted that the organization supported the North American Union with Canada and Mexico.

When one is preaching to the choir it is expedient to expel any dissonant notes.

Yes, it is a yes or no.
The extent to which the reports and publications of the CFR influence law, politics, and government policies could be debatable. If it doesn't have any influence, then I guess membership doesn't much matter; If it does have any influence then I sure hope that conservatives are taking part in the discussion, debate, and report generation so that conservative ideas are part of that influence.
As another poster -- who has professed on this thread to be a former member -- has stated, it is a essentially debate society. As with any debate society or think tank, its output may have some influence with various officials and thus may influence law, policies, etc. On the other hand, that influence could simply be to the extent that the output agrees with the existing position of said officials. As an organization, the CFR has no authority and no power to influence or change anything in regards to law, politics, government policies, etc. However, the extent to which you accept this information might depend on your own preconceived ideas about what the CFR is and is not.

Are you familiar with Fred's position on "Comprehensive Immigration Reform"? What are the differences and similarities between Fred's position on CIR and Duncan Hunter's position?

Well, I’ve been to some public universities, which by definition American institutions, since they receive tax dollars, and THEY frequently dont seem to have America’s best interests in mind.
CFR is a big club of policy wonk-types and others that does a lot of research into a great many political and foreign policy topics. They range all over the map from far left to far right, just like the membership roster does. They do a lot of “what if?” kinds of papers. It’s like a debate club on steroids. The people there are influential people, whether by position or by brainpower. That doesn’t mean that anything they publish means a lot, other than to specialists in the topic discussed. They put out a widely available public journal of what they discuss. It’s as dry as month-old toast to read 99% of the time. In fact, Romney just had something published in it last issue. If I recall correctly, they have thousands of members. If it’s a conspiracy of any sort, it’s not a good one.

I ask because I was told several times the CFR has no position on any issue.
It appears that you are only able to digest very small bites, and leave everything of substance on the plate untouched, and then rephrase your question as if it were a rebuttal to the answers you have been given repeatedly by several different respondants.

I think it would be more accurate to say that the CFR has mutliple positions on any issue.

They occasionally have some influence, depending on the quality of the reports they put out, and the willingness of people in positions of real authority to heed what they say. Let’s say they are a provider of advice, you can either take that advice, or not take it, it’s up to you.
As far as any real, legal, authority in terms of law or any kind of binding actions. Nope. They don’t. Some members might be in positions of power that DO have influence, so in theory they could be swayed by a position paper or some such, but the CFR is not the “Decider”
When someone doesn’t like an answer, they just keep repeating themselves.
Sound’s like a mental condition to me, but hey, I’m no psychiatrist. So what do I know?
