Vandals Batter D.C. Man's SUV, Slash Its Tires and Scratch In an Eco Note
On a narrow, leafy street in Northwest Washington, where Prius hybrid cars and Volvos are the norm, one man bought a flashy gray Hummer that was too massive to fit in his garage. So he parked the seven-foot-tall behemoth on the street in front of his house and smiled politely when his eco-friendly neighbors looked on in disapproval at his "dream car."
It lasted five days on the street before two masked men took a bat to every window, a knife to each 38-inch tire and scratched into the body: "FOR THE ENVIRON."
"The thought of somebody vandalizing it never crossed my mind," said Gareth Groves...
Now, as Groves ponders what to do with the remains of his $38,000 SUV, he has been the target of a number of people who have driven by the crime scene in his upscale neighborhood and glared at him in smug satisfaction...
Neighbor Lucille Liem, 37, who owns a Prius hybrid, said that a common sentiment in the neighborhood is that large vehicles are impractical and a strain on the Earth -- and Hummers in particular are a symbol of consumer excess... Liem added quickly that she does not condone violence...
Investigators said they are searching for the vandals but don't have many leads. Witnesses saw two men about six feet tall with bandanas or masks over their faces smash up the car about 3:30 a.m. Monday and then run off...
He bought the used 2005 vehicle a month ago from a dentist in Fairfax County..."I'm worried about what I do now," he said. "If I get it fixed, do I put it back in the same spot three weeks from now?"

I'm planning to nurse my tired old Caravan along till the next election, then put Republican stickers all over it and wait for the vandals to kill it. I'll be posting the pictures here when they do!
Looking at his pic, I have to wonder if his Hummer wasn't messed up because he likes to come thumping through the neighborhood at 3am with the bass cranked.
It should have said "FOR THE ENVI."
Leftists are envi-mentalists.
Xena I use mine to get to work in the winter so that some other poor shlub won’t have to do a double, but thats just me.
Post a pitcher (that's southern for picture) on your fr home page?
Well I'm a middle aged man, and I don't care what you think; if I had the spare change; I'd get a Vette.
Something along the lines of.....
1963 ~ 1967 - IMHO the best looking Vettes ever. Particularly the roadsters.
I think he’s hot, plus he’s a Chargers fan! Although he does live at home with his mom at 32 WTF?
Wrong.
Trucks rock. I plan to get an old grain truck, get some historical plates and park it in my driveway to use as a fuel dispenser for my Diesel cars.
You've reminded me of my first ride fresh out of high school. It was a nice 73 C10 Chevy pickup with a 350ci and 4 barrel carb. After three years of headers, dual exhaust, Holly carb, 3/4 race cam, stick shifter and several other things I didn't need, the truck became so fast I could no longer keep up with it. Now, 39 years latter when I can afford to fix up a hotrod, I would rather buy a new car just the way I want it, practical.
Bingo. Saturn also makes a wagon. That's all I can think of for American manufacturers, though the PT Cruiser is arguably a wagon.. Among the imports, Mercedes and Volvo builds wagons. I don't think BMW does. VW, maybe. The Porsche Cayenne is billed as a sports car/SUV hybrid, but let's get real. It's a station wagon.
Starting in the mid-80s, the minivan killed of the market for the station wagon. Raise the ceiling and make the door bigger, and you have a vehicle that's more practical and more comfortable but with similar handling and fuel economy. Then the SUV took over with soccer moms and dads who thought they were too young and hip to drive a minivan but still needed room for the kids' carpool.
I keep my Hummer in my garage/pole barn.
Heck, you can get stuck in the mud with a tank. I once mired one up to the sponson boxes(fenders, for the non-tread heads). The 60 series had a 750 hp diesel and got gallons to the mile. To pull it out I had to dive under the mud to connect the tow cables to the hull, AND buy the M880 crew a case of beer!
...”I’m worried about what I do now,” he said. “If I get it fixed, do I put it back in the same spot three weeks from now?”...Yes, with two pit bulls in it.
Well, there’s mini vans and full size vans (bigger inside than SUVs).
Husband! Nooooooooo! Well, the pointy ears are still cool.
It’s on there. It takes a while to load, though. Click on the little yellow Beetle and it’ll take you to my blog about it.
Lovely!
That house is in Northwest DC, and probably is worth well over $1,000,000.
