Iran’s SCO Membership on the Cards - Lavrov
kommersant.com ^ | July 11, 2007
Posted on 07/13/2007 5:32:29 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will close ranks to oppose Washingtons growing influence in the Central Asia, Russias Defense Minister Sergey Lavrov said in Kyrgyzstan earlier this week. The SCO is set to boost ties with Iran as controversy with the United States is growing.
Sergey Lavrov warned that the deployment of the U.S. missile shield in Eastern Europe can adversely affect the Central Asia. We see that consequences of the unilateral action will affect Central Asia and we should take into account not only the interests of the member states, but also the interests of the observers in this organization, Mr. Lavrov said at the meeting of foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Kyrgyzstans capital of Bishkek. The meeting approved the agenda for the SCO summit in August. SCO leaders are to sign a treaty to regulate relations between the members and a declaration to declare the common view on global developments, Sergey Lavrov added.
The Russian foreign policy chief also called to step up efforts to admit Iran as a member state.
Moscow lobbied Irans membership in the SCO last year but Beijing would oppose the move assuming it would sour relations with the West. The Kremlin seems to have decided to revive the idea as its relations with Washington is getting increasingly strained.
On another note, gas rich Turkmenistan may join the organization at the upcoming summit. The countrys new leader Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov is invited as an honorary guest. Uzbek President Islam Karimov had the same status at the 2005 summit which voted to admit his country to the organization.
Irans President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is to visit the summit and may also join other leaders at a military range in Russia to see command post exercises.
The Shanghai cooperation organization includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as members with India, Pakistan and Mongolia as observers.

Russia Suspends Participation in Arms Control Treaty
Associated Press ^ | July 14, 2007
Posted on 07/14/2007 1:16:31 AM PDT by HAL9000
MOSCOWRussian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree suspending Russia’s participation in a key European arms control treaty, the Kremlin said Saturday.
The Kremlin said in a statement the need to pull out of Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty was linked to “extraordinary circumstances ... which affect the security of the Russian Federation and require immediate measures.”
The treaty is seen as a key element in maintaining stability in Europe. It establishes limitations on countries’ deployment of tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters and combat aircraft.

“Exclusive: Terror Commander: New Attack Will Dwarf Failed Bomb Plot”
July 13, 2007 4:37 PM
Brian Ross and Maddy Sauer Report:
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “As senior intelligence and law enforcement officials met again today in the White House Situation Room to deal with the “summer terror threat,” a top terror commander said an attack was coming that would dwarf the failed bombings in London and Glasgow.
Taliban military commander Mansour Dadullah, in an interview broadcast on ABC News’ “World News With Charles Gibson,” said the London attacks were “not enough” and that bigger attacks were coming.
“You will, God willing, be witness to more attacks,” he told a Pakistani journalist in an interview conducted just four days ago.

Just last month, Dadullah presided over what was termed a terror training camp graduation ceremony in Pakistan, supposedly dispatching attack teams to the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Germany.
In this new interview, Dadullah talked about the ease with which he and his men operate inside Pakistan.”

In Pakistan’s lawless tribal regions like Waziristan, Al Qaeda’s training camps have reopened for business. Video footage shows Mullah Dadullah preaching to hundreds of suicide bombers.
Row upon row of masked men listen engrossed to the words of their leader. “Your bellies, your guts, your flesh and bones will be turned into nuclear weapons”, Mullah Dadullah preaches. Every one of these men has signed up for ‘martyrdom operations’. Mullah Dadullah has watched suicide bombers reduce Iraq to chaos. He plans to import these tactics to Afghanistan on a massive scale. One of the volunteers is Mohammad. He was motivated by the story of an Iraqi woman raped by Americans. He claims he trained alongside recruits from the West; “500 people from many countries, including Britain and America, went through this training”. During the interview he gets a call. It’s the order to go. Unhesitating, he puts on a jacket and disappears. We learn later his mission was aborted but he was killed in fighting. That fits a pattern. Up to now, suicide bombings in Afghanistan have been less effective than those in Iraq, mainly because they’ve been attacking hard targets like military convoys. But if Mullah Dadullah really is about to switch tactics, his army of suicide bombers will undoubtedly claim more victims. (less)

Release A070714a
Al-Qaeda cell leader, 17 suspected bombers captured
BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition Forces detained 18 suspected terrorists during operations in central and northern Iraq Saturday targeting bombing networks and terrorist cell leaders.
One suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader surrendered to Coalition Forces during a raid in Mosul. The individual is the alleged security emir of Mosul, operating terrorist cells in the area and maintaining connections to other high-level al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders.
Coalition Forces captured a suspected vehicle-borne improvised explosive device cell leader southeast of Baghdad. During the raid, the ground forces also detained eight suspected terrorists tied to the bombing cell.
During a raid southwest of the capital city, Coalition Forces captured an alleged IED operative and two individuals suspected of emplacing IEDs for him.
A Coalition Forces raid northwest of Baghdad netted five suspected terrorists who are allegedly tied to a chlorine VBIED facilitator in Anbar province.
Combating the bombing networks that conduct vicious attacks against the citizens of Iraq is a high priority for us, said Maj. Marc Young, an MNF-I spokesperson. Taking these leaders and operatives off the street brings us a step closer to a peaceful Iraq.

My guess is that it is an either/or. As hamered as the White House has been on Iraq, for W to order a strike against Iran which would result in a major expansion of fighting in the region is hard to conceive. However, an Israeli govt official recently said that the US had given them the green light to strike. Iran has made it clear that it will respond to an attack an the two carriers will have their hands full. If Syria strikes, that could provide enough excuse for W to strike them in conjunction with Israel. Either case could have things escalating to biblical proportions quickly.
IF the Israelis pull the trigger on Iran and Syria first what is the liklihood in your estimation of that conflict widening substantially and do you think that any such conflict may increase terror potentials here on home soil?
Iran, Syria, Hezzbollah and Hamas would almost immediately pull the trigger. I think Iran has been prepping them for such action since last summer. As far as terror here, I'm not sure. I would expect a significant rise in SJS (sudden jihad syndrome), but the major attacks, as we've seen, they've taken a lot of time in planning and work to pull off. A rapid response could potentially blow their cover as well as security level here would likely jump off the meter (journalists almost seem to be wetting their pants under the current threats), which would disrupt any ongoing plans. Unless they have the vans loaded with fertilizer bombs ready to drive into malls, hospitals, etc (which they've threatened), they would be delayed as they reassess our security. If we are kicking tail and taking names as a result of an Iranian attack, they will be doubly motivated and I'm sure they'll go after it as soon as they feel the initial wave of security and alertness is over.
Magog drawn by a hook......
Definitely and it's not just British prisons. We know about all the jihadi recruiting in U.S. prisons and it wouldn't surprise me if it goes on in other countries as well.
Thanks for the links and articles Cindy.
I have an informal ping list to which I will be glad to add you.
