Fred Thompson explains his remarks about Cuba
Palm Beach Post ^ | 6/30/07 | Brian Crowley

Posted on 06/30/2007 2:50:45 PM PDT by freedom44

“For a while, it didn’t look like Washington was going to listen to us regarding real immigration reform. Thankfully, we’ve been spared a serious mistake, but I wonder if things would have turned out the way they did without the work done by the bloggers, talk radio and the American people. Rush, Hannity, Laura Ingraham, RedState, Powerline, Pajamas Media and a lot of others have done a great job. Take that, Fairness Doctrine.

“Anybody who knows my track record or has read some of the things I’ve written about the Cuban-American community knows where I stand. While the communist dictatorship has been a tragedy for Cuba, America has been in some ways, at least, the beneficiary.

“One of those benefits is the presence of the great Cuban-American artist, Gloria Estefan. She co-wrote a song called “No hay mal que por bien no venga” which I understand translates something like — there’s no bad that doesn’t bring some good. The bad that is Castro’s tyranny has given America one of the greatest communities in the Western Hemisphere.

“And no one knows better than that community that the Castro regime remains dedicated to infiltrating American institutions to spread his ideology of tyranny. Castro admitted it himself in an interview with CNN in 1998.

“This is why the Cuban government rightfully remains on the State Department’s terrorist list for its continued support of terrorism. It’s also why we must oppose the illegal immigration of Castro’s agents into the United States while welcoming the vast majority who immigrate legally and with legal intentions.

“It seems to me that few Americans understand the threat that the illegal entry by Cuban spies represents to our country, though Cuban-Americans have never forgotten or stopped pointing it out. Ambassador Otto Reich, the former Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere has called Castro’s efforts to penetrate U.S. intelligence networks ‘relentless.’

“The best-known incident involving Cuban espionage, which many believe may have provided U.S. secrets to hostile Middle Eastern regimes, is probably that of former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst Ana Belen Montes — convicted of espionage in 2002. Now, our intelligence picture has been further complicated by the emergence of oil-funded Hugo Chavez and his anti-American, pro-Castro regime. We know that Cuban intelligence officers, for instance, are in South America — presumably training Venezuelans and others in the intelligence arts.

“Our national security is too important an issue to let folks twist words around for a one-day headline. Cuban-Americans are among the staunchest opponents of illegal immigration, and especially so when it’s sponsored by the Castro regime. We know we have a porous southern border in which they can currently slip through easily. Our enemies know it too.

“All of us should be rightfully concerned about Castro and his ideological pal Chavez sending agents and provocateurs into the United States through Mexico. I’m sure that Cuban-Americans share this concern as well.

“We’ve seen today what the voice of the people can do in Washington. Let’s hope similar voices can do the same thing for Cuba.”

Extreme Mortman hits the bullseye:

“We learn from this AP story that Hillary Clinton on Saturday visited Walt Disney World — not riding the Teacup Ride, but attacking Fred Thompson, who’s not even officially in the race.”

“Either Hillary was Goofy for the day, or there’s no doubt who’s the Republican front-runner.”

Hillary Clinton Says She Is “Appalled”

The Florida Politics blog ^ | June 30, 2007 | Brian E. Crowley
Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday she is “appalled” by remarks made by Republican Fred Thompson suggesting that some Cuban refugees could be terrorists. Thompson, an actor and former Tennessee senator, spoke about Cuban refugees Wednesday during an appearance in South Carolina. The topic was illegal immigration and Thompson’s opposition to any legislation that does not do enough to protect America’s borders. Using Cuban refugees as an example, Thompson said, “I don’t imagine they’re coming here to bring greetings from Castro. We’re living in the era of the suitcase bomb,” Clinton, New York’s junior Democratic senator, speaking to a group of...

One thing that I'm really liking about Fred is that he DOES respond quickly to attacks. A very refreshing change from the style of President Bush, who seems to prefer to let the dems and the media pile on for days and weeks on any issue before responding.

And then stammering and sounding like his response was a consensus after a 3-hour conference call that included Trent Lott.

There is something nice about a guy who responds in his own reasonable time with gentlemanly cojones. Not too swift a la McCain's "F You"s. And not thought out overnight by a panel of hand wringers.

Ok ok.

Just saying, the headline reads like he’s climbing down.

Gingrich did that, and disappeared into historical oblivion, taking a part of the GOP’s future with him.

Just don’t want that sort of backtracking anymore.

We need to fight and confront liberals on every front. They can be beat. And they know it.

That’s why they’re talking about that “Fairness Doctrine”.

They sense they’re losing control of the national debate.

Good.

We need to take it away from them.

Video of Fred's original remarks in full context (South Carolina speech, part 2)

Transcript of Thompson's full related original remarks, excerpted from his speech in South Carolina

THOMPSON: You talk about national security, one of the biggest national security issues that we face is right here at home. We're having a big debate now with the immigration bill. They say it's dividing our party. I think to a certain extent, that's right, and I don't think it will always be that way. I think we have to have our honest disagreements and honest opinions and then move on. Some very good friends of mine is on the other - or, are on the other side from where I am. That's all right; we're adults. Let's air our views and decide what's best for this country.

The bottom line is not what's best for one party or another or who's going to get the most votes when the dust settles. The bottom line is what's best for the strength and the long-term endurance of this country, and this immigration bill is not it.

We're catching, over a period of years, thousands of illegal immigrants coming from southern borders that are non-fence-able. Many of them come from terrorist-related states. We were just talking earlier, and I remember the figure that stuck out to me -- in the year 2005, we apprehended over 1,000 folks that originally has come from Cuba. If they're coming from Cuba, where else are they coming from? And I don't imagine they're coming here to bring greetings from Castro. We're living in the era of the suitcase bomb. We can't be talking seriously about national security while that's going on. We're catching one for every three that we don't catch -- they say. That's our government's estimate, so you can imagine what the real ratio is.

So -- in 1986 we were offered a deal that we'll grant amnesty for a certain amount of people and we'll secure the border. Well now they're coming back and offering the same deal. And basically saying that we want -- we want you to deal with 12 million now, and this time we really mean it -- we'll secure the border. And the American people are saying, "Fool me twice, shame on me." And they say, "No, it's right here in the bill. I mean, we'll secure the border." And they're saying, "I don't care if it's in the bill -- secure the border."

These may be his original remarks, but where else are you going to see them - certainly not in the DBM. They will however, gleefully print and broadcast the She-Beast’s spin on what he said, as long as it makes him look bad and makes her look good :-(

Exactly. And we ain't seen NOTHIN' yet. I've been saying since 2004 that the 2008 election would be the biggest propaganda effort in the history of the world. The SheDevil is gonna paint herself as all things to all people, and the MSM are gonna become more shameless than even we think they could ever become. Those who don't believe it, just watch.

And those who think she's unelectable are vastly underestimating the power of evil. I remember people belly-laughing in 1992 at the very notion that Bill Clinton could ever be president. After he was elected, many of those same people boldly declared that he would absolutely positively NEVER be re-elected. We saw how that turned out, eh?

To attribute common sense to the masses of today's era is a horrible misjudgment. For over 40 years we've had an establishment teaching the gullible that they're entitled to do whatever they want and HAVE whatever they want, damn all costs to someone else. A couple generations of those gullible self-centered, self-absorbed people are now called VOTERS, and she who reinforces their twisted belief system they will view as almost divine.

As frightening as it is, she's most certainly electable in today's environment.

She's going to try to get as much mileage out of this as she can. Until the blogosphere blows her out of the water, as with the Dan Rather attack on GWB's military record.

She's soiling her Depends with Fred Fear - she's got to destroy him before he gets the Republican nomination.

Der Schlickmeister had a lot of help from the little hand grenade with the bad haircut. The little cretin got 19% of the vote, mostly from what Dad Bush would've gotten. Bubba only got 43% in 1992, and 49% in 1996.

hildebeast just got dumped on with excellent and intelligent responses. hildebeast is outclassed by Fred in every department. She will only cause her negatives to soar... and they are at some mighty lofty altitudes today. Fred has no fear of the beast and neither do I. She is going down for good in ‘08. NY can have the b!tch!

Oh, Mitt’s not all that bad. In the big picture, he’s one of the good guys. But his supporters, at least the vocal contingent here on FR that can’t stay out of the FRed threads with their attacks against him, are a worthless bunch. When they start siding with Hillary Rotten Clinton against FRed, you know that they share Hillary and Bill’s basic political philosophy: Winning trumps everything, including principle.

Yup. And both those figures were good enough respectively to move him into 1600 Pennsylvania, and keep him there another four years. Look at the damage he wrought.

Cuban Americans are smart... they can even read and comprehend like we do. They will be shown the truth in no uncertain terms. The truth will win Election ‘08. America thirsts for it. America craves a leader that they can trust... and when someone tells a provable lie about you and you have the truth on your side as indisputable proof... you will always win. The truth is also GOD’s way and hildebeast is evil. The truth will destroy her. Horrible truths will surface when they can hurt her the most... her day of reckoning will soon be at hand... many years of research and ignored evidence will surface... and she may even fall completely. She is not to be feared but defeated.

Yeah. It was a sarcastic remark about Mitt, but it did reflect the sentiment of the poster in regards to Fred.

I can never understand why people must run down someone else’s choice just to bolster their own.

I guess if you can’t say anything good about your choice of candidate, then you’re left with bashing the choice of others.

“When they start siding with Hillary Rotten Clinton against FRed, you know that they share Hillary and Bill’s basic political philosophy: Winning trumps everything, including principle.”

Yep. Lot’s of ‘closet liberals ‘here.

We say it with the Rudy threads too.
