For a while, it didnt look like Washington was going to listen to us regarding real immigration reform. Thankfully, weve been spared a serious mistake, but I wonder if things would have turned out the way they did without the work done by the bloggers, talk radio and the American people. Rush, Hannity, Laura Ingraham, RedState, Powerline, Pajamas Media and a lot of others have done a great job. Take that, Fairness Doctrine.
Anybody who knows my track record or has read some of the things Ive written about the Cuban-American community knows where I stand. While the communist dictatorship has been a tragedy for Cuba, America has been in some ways, at least, the beneficiary.
One of those benefits is the presence of the great Cuban-American artist, Gloria Estefan. She co-wrote a song called No hay mal que por bien no venga which I understand translates something like theres no bad that doesnt bring some good. The bad that is Castros tyranny has given America one of the greatest communities in the Western Hemisphere.
And no one knows better than that community that the Castro regime remains dedicated to infiltrating American institutions to spread his ideology of tyranny. Castro admitted it himself in an interview with CNN in 1998.
This is why the Cuban government rightfully remains on the State Departments terrorist list for its continued support of terrorism. Its also why we must oppose the illegal immigration of Castros agents into the United States while welcoming the vast majority who immigrate legally and with legal intentions.
It seems to me that few Americans understand the threat that the illegal entry by Cuban spies represents to our country, though Cuban-Americans have never forgotten or stopped pointing it out. Ambassador Otto Reich, the former Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere has called Castros efforts to penetrate U.S. intelligence networks relentless.
The best-known incident involving Cuban espionage, which many believe may have provided U.S. secrets to hostile Middle Eastern regimes, is probably that of former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst Ana Belen Montes convicted of espionage in 2002. Now, our intelligence picture has been further complicated by the emergence of oil-funded Hugo Chavez and his anti-American, pro-Castro regime. We know that Cuban intelligence officers, for instance, are in South America presumably training Venezuelans and others in the intelligence arts.
Our national security is too important an issue to let folks twist words around for a one-day headline. Cuban-Americans are among the staunchest opponents of illegal immigration, and especially so when its sponsored by the Castro regime. We know we have a porous southern border in which they can currently slip through easily. Our enemies know it too.
All of us should be rightfully concerned about Castro and his ideological pal Chavez sending agents and provocateurs into the United States through Mexico. Im sure that Cuban-Americans share this concern as well.
Weve seen today what the voice of the people can do in Washington. Lets hope similar voices can do the same thing for Cuba.
Lesson in getting makaka’d
This isn’t an explanation of FDT’s Cuba remarks. These are the original remarks.
Fred better hang on - he’s gonna have a bumpy ride. The She-Beast has him in her sights, and now that the Obama threat seems to be subsiding, she’s gonna hit Fred with everything she can conjure up.
Congressman Billybob
Are these the remarks that hillary distorted to accuse Fred of calling Cuban-Americans “terrorists”?? Fred should rub her lying face in this one and force her to publicly apologize.
These may be his original remarks, but where else are you going to see them - certainly not in the DBM. They will however, gleefully print and broadcast the She-Beast’s spin on what he said, as long as it makes him look bad and makes her look good :-(
Absolutely this is his original speech.
Is this the actual title to this article? if so the PBP is trying to pass off some incorrect information.
Yes that is the actual title and since it is the rule on FR that I cannot change the original title I did not.
He didn’t say anything bad about Cubans, but rather about Castro’s Cuban agents. Not all Cubans are Castro’s agents, right?
Perhaps Hillary misspoke. Perhaps she meant to say that all Cuban immigrants work for Castro, and that’s why what Fred Thompson said was bad.
Hillary is an idiot...but still, a dangerous and highly useful idiot for the powers that be.
It made me cringe to read the headline, “Fred Thompson explains his remarks about Cuba”. This implies that Fred said something wrong and is now being forced to backpedal because The Witch called him on it.
If Fred’s starting out by apologizing to liberals, I do believe I’m gonna puke.
STAND YOUR GROUND FRED.
Sheesh. Haven’t we learned anything?
Never. Ever. Apologize to a liberal.
For anything.
It sounded like Tom Clancy’s top worry about illegal immigration.
Pat Robertson years ago ran for president. His biggest faux pas was some rambling statement about Soviet Army divisions hidden in Cuban caves. A far nuttier statement than Thompson’s, admittedly.
This is something he wrote and posted on the 28th.
She attacked him for the video snippet from South Carolina, not the written speech.
He needs to immediately make a YouTube video, ala the riposte, cigar in hand, to Michael Moore. I have every confidence that Fred is too smart to let the B**ch put him on the defensive. They’ve been on opposing sides all the way back to Watergate (which, being a seasoned citizen, I remember quite vividly).
All I can say is that the PBP made a mistake. This is what The Hag based her criticism on. [She needs to work on her reading comprehension.] I’m happy to see that FDT is not offering any explanation of his remarks. None is called for.
The headline of this totally screwed up. This story has a publish date of the 30th, today. But Fred posted this on his blog on the 28th.

Ah. I’m not sure that I saw that. However, this does not come across as an explanation of his remarks. I detest The Hag.
Duncan Hunter is my guy, but I’d hate to see Fred have to start tap dancing for Hillary.
Here is what Fred was talking about:

Nothing “nutty” about Fred’s statement. Castro sent hundreds of spies when he emptied his prisons into jimmy carter’s waiting arms in the 70’s.
