Here we are again my friends, hopefully for the last debate thread on this particular monstrous legislation. Proceedings are supposed to begin at 9:30 a.m. EST, with the cloture vote being taken at 10:30 a.m.
On a personal note, you've all been wonderful in your passion, vigilance, and commitment to the principles on which our country was founded. If I have to be in a foxhole, I want to be in it with you guys.
Yes... "you" are the big winner today... "you" are on a roll... "you" were named Time Magazine's Person of the Year last year, and "you" were instrumental in keeping this garbage from becoming law.
And of course, by "you"... I mean every citizen of the US.
Hey...I can dream, can't I? :-)
Ah, the answer for everything. It goes up, “Money knows.” It goes down, “Money knows.” Do you know how silly that sounds?
At least they won’t be legal. :)
Brownback changed his vote from YES to NO when he saw it going the other way, the weasel.

Robert Novak said it best:
“On its own, the decision to combine border security with naturalization of illegal immigrants has always been the President’s way of holding a national priority (security) hostage to a policy (legalization) that he views as desirable. “

Correction: He is now known as Senator Sam SwitchBack
Shouldn't be a problem.
I've been shaken for over 6 weeks!!!!!!!
Try over 2 years!
We will definitely need to confirm with the offices...make sure it will be accepted.
“At the end of Limbaugh’s show today, he discussed something that Lindsey Graham said, that it was his job to work with the Democrat majority to get things done.”
Can anyone (in their right mind) picture Barbara Boxer or Ted Kennedy making this same statement (except in regards to a GOP majority) two years ago?!
There’s always a time and place for true bi-partisanship - but this “Immigration Reform” bill was not one of ‘em. Lindsay Graham did the GOP no favors by rolling over for the Democrats.
If Bush has started drinking again, per the rumors, tonight’s going to be one of those nights for he, and his compadre, Ted.
There are none so blind....
Absolutely, we can take this country back!
Look, I have heard this argument-Michale Medved believe this. However, I think Hispanics are a natural constituency of the Democrat Party. They come from a socialist country. Certainly socialism is more similar to the Dems than to the Repubs. We were never getting hispanic vote which is why the Dems were so anxious to get this bill through.
I heard the statistics about 2004 and 2006. However, they lump the Cuban-American vote in with hispanic vote-two different groups. The Cuban-Americans held a grudge for quite a while over the Gonzales situation- sending the child back to Cuba.
The Repubs pushing for this bill wanted slave labor (horrible motivation) and the Dems wanted the new voters.
Which party, by and large, saved us from this dreadful bill? {direct answers only, no squishy answers, please}
Well, a "squishy" premise such as your deserves a "squishy" answer, but I'll forego the temptation and give you the direct answers you claim to seek:
NO PARTY saved anybody from anything today. It was THE PARTIES which were the agents and enablers of the various interests which originated the threat this bill presented.
What saved us (for a time) was millions and millions of INDIVIDUAL Americans, of all parties, ethnicities, races, etc., across the board and across party lines, who stepped-up and confronted INDIVIDUAL Senators, of BOTH PARTIES, and let them know in no uncertain terms that they, personally, would suffer dire consequences if they allowed this abomination to pass.
Except for a principled handful, the Senators who finally voted to stop this atrocity did so solely to save their own sorry asses and political careers. They didn't do it for their Party. Neither of the political PARTIES deserve credit for stopping the bill - the PARTIES were the enemy. There were only two things that saved the day: 1. The willingness of a handful of Senators to put the good of their country, and principle, ahead of PARTY; and 2. the instinct for survival of the far greater number who valued their own sorry hides above PARTY as well.
