Live Thread: Senate Amnesty Debate (CRITICAL 2ND CLOTURE VOTE TODAY!) Woo hoo!! It's DEAD!!
The U.S. Senate with Free Republic Input | June 28, 2007 | truthkeeper

Posted on 06/28/2007 6:25:57 AM PDT by truthkeeper

Here we are again my friends, hopefully for the last debate thread on this particular monstrous legislation. Proceedings are supposed to begin at 9:30 a.m. EST, with the cloture vote being taken at 10:30 a.m.

On a personal note, you've all been wonderful in your passion, vigilance, and commitment to the principles on which our country was founded. If I have to be in a foxhole, I want to be in it with you guys.

The democrats liked the bill, they just weren't pushing it. The republican leadership loved the bill too, but the few conservatives in the senate did not.

Of course. Why should they - the Rats, that is - do ANY of the heavy lifting, as well as take the political hit, if the have the President to do it for them?
Like some of us said earlier, his political capital bank account is definitely overdrawn at this point.

Could you please explain this to Cedric?

“He (Reid) wasn’t even that crazy about the bill...”

“The democratic party liked the legislation...”

Okay, Jeff, spin your way out of these two irreconcilable statements, both of which YOU made over the past 60 minutes or so.

Your view of the true dynamics of this legislative battle are as sophomoric as they are (needlessly) anti-Republican.

Keep being obtuse. Look, I am not “crazy” about ice cream but my office complex gave out free ice cream yesterday and I liked it.

The democrats were along for the ride. If the bill passed then great for them, if not then they wouldn’t lose anything, the GOP would be in shambles and Bush would be completely neutered.

Again, I have to wonder how old you are. I’m guessing high school or college, right?

Actually, you might want to read Cedric's bizarre statements before jumping onboard.

Don't worry, not jumping on board. Just trying to lighten the mood. Can't help it, I'm happy this morning!

:-)

The dynamics of this battle are easy to see. It is not clear why you want to cover your eyes and pretend that the republicans were the heroes in this.

The villains were the traitors (both republican and democrat) and the heroes were the those that believe in American sovereignty.

Menendez just now goes about as far right now as to call us all bigots and racists.

In return, we may recognize him as the unAmerican traitor that he is.

It WOULD have been win-win for the Dems if this bill had passed. As to who supported vs. opposed, R vs. D, far more D’s supported it, as you know. Bush and McCain were bucking their party on this one. The GOP can turn this to their good if they change their platform to reflect rule of law, border security, real ID requirements, and review of immigration law with any changes to benefit LEGAL immigrants. And no ‘temporary’ slave-workers: Equal protection means if we have employment laws, they must be followed by everyone.

The poor, illiterate Hispanics brought in for employers to enjoy paying sub-legal wages are going to respond to the Democrats’ siren call of something for nothing. Rove and WSJ are wrong on this one. This bill’s approach would have ensured a Democrat majority for the foreseeable future.

The only reason I can think of for Republicans voting for this bill was to support businesses who want cheap labor. But once the illegals are made de-facto legal, businesses will have to start paying them legal wages. Where is the benefit then?

If Republicans would take a unified stand against amnesty, and for enforcing existing law (including the border fence), it would be a huge boost to their popularity among the American public - 80% of which is against the amnesty approach.

The bill had to much ‘punishment’ for illegals to be completely to Harry’s liking. No one really liked the bill. The Democrats are for amnesty because they believe they would have millions of new voters for their party ( I do also). The Big Business Repubs like the bill because they want slave labor for their business buddies. No one liked the compromise.
