San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew and District Attorney Kamala Harris are certainly at odds now -- she's trying to throw him in prison, after all -- but it wasn't always that way.
In fact, the two have a relationship that goes back to 2003, when the Harris campaign paid Jew between $15,000 and $20,000 to help get out the Chinese American vote.
Harris' campaign manager Jim Stearns credits Jew with helping to produce Chinese-language ads, putting together events with the Chinese American press and recruiting volunteers for Chinese-language phone banks.
It apparently paid off big on election day. Harris not only carried the vote in Chinatown, but exit polls showed she won 48 percent of the Chinese American vote citywide. Neither of her two rivals got more than 29 percent.
But here's the real capper. One of those two rivals was former prosecutor Bill Fazio -- who is now defending Jew against the perjury and other charges brought by Harris.
Given that the crux of the criminal case is whether Jew actually lived in the Sunset District when he registered to vote and ran for office, we were curious to know what mailing address he was using four years ago to collect his paychecks from the Harris campaign.
"I think we handed the checks to him,'' Stearns said after a lengthy laugh. "I don't think Ed is the kind of guy you mailed things to.''
Speaking of residence: It's Jew's turn on the hot seat over whether he really lives in his district, but other pols have had their backsides warmed by that issue as well.
Take John Burton. For years there were questions about whether he actually resided in his childhood home on Sloat Boulevard when he represented the area in the Legislature,

- Ed Jew
Isn’t she the stinker who refused to investigate when the Whiffenpoofs were beaten up by a bunch of privileged SF thugs? The name seems familiar.
Maybe she should be investigated.
San Francisco is the wierdest place in the world, politically speaking. I lived there for a number of years and still have family there, so I go to visit from time to time.
I’m from New York City, originally, and I will say that SF ethnic (and now sexual “orientation”) politics made crazy NYC look like a model of enlightened, educated democracy.
“Ed Jew.”
Gesundheit!
Huh, that figures.
It`s San Fran... You sure Ed Jew isn`t the photo on top?
Maybe he has a neighbor named Ed Asian who is a Jew.
Bet she doesn’t get the Chinese American vote next time she runs for office.
“I bet she doesn’t get the chinese-american vote next time”
She won’t need it—she’ll have the mexican vote locked.
Ms.Harris clearly has a thing about the JEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWSSSSSSS.
:~)
Oddly, I was born in San Francisco, while my parents were on their travels. But I’ve only been back once since, for an MLA conference.
It’s a beautiful town, but as you say, rather strange.
Sure is the same one. Also the “No Death Penalty” for cop killers DA.
Strange name, Kamala. I googled it, and the first thing I turned up is a professional wrestler, who goes by the name of Kamala the Ugandan Giant.
Or maybe it’s from the Indian name meaning “Lotus.”
Sounds like Mad Magazine parody names of real politicians.
(The 2nd one seems to be a way of disguising the name "Katherine Harris". And the first one is.... some California Jewish Democrat with the first named Edward?)
Asians make up one third of the population in ‘frisco, but have only Ed Jew as a supervisor...I have no idea how that came about.
Not only that, but Jew is the most conservative Supe on the board...that’s why the others want him gone, not because he listed an empty house (whose water-use records over the past three years showed almost NO water usage!) as his place of residence!
Ed
