Penalty Mitigation in the Immigration Reform Bill [White House Spokesman Responds: Post #53]
Free Republic ^ | 6-13-2007 | philman_36

Posted on 06/13/2007 6:57:12 AM PDT by philman_36

This morning on Fox and Friends there was made mention that much stricter fines are in the immigration reform bill. While this is true many folks may not know about a few words that follow the language about the tougher fines. Those words make a travesty of any "fines" as they can be waved and the employer could walk away owing nothing in penalties.

Here are the words I've got a problem with...

(D) The Secretary is authorized to reduce or mitigate penalties imposed upon employers, based upon factors including, but not limited to, the employer's hiring volume, compliance history, good-faith implementation of a compliance program, participation in temporary worker program, and voluntary disclosure of violations of this subsection to the Secretary.

So while we're being told that "the penalties are tougher" we aren't being told that under some circumstances employers can face reduced or even no fine whatsoever.
At this point of time in our history America can't afford our officials not being completely truthful to us and not stating that the possibility exists for employers to potentially be let off the hook completely is simply unacceptable.

Oh, don’t pee on my head and tell me it’s raining!!

You take this upstairs to the Oval Office:

SHOW the American people (read “legal United States citizens”) a PROVEN TRACK RECORD of solid border security AND internal enforcement, as in several years of CONSISTENT Congressional funding AND ACTION, and then maybe — just MAYBE — we’ll be ready to sit down and entertain some discussion about a plan to allow illegal aliens some kind of path to American citizenship that dignifies their humanity.

Until then, NO DICE!

PROOVEN ENFORCEMENT FIRST! NO COMPROMISE!

I’m sorry to disagree so sharply with the President, but he is wrong and there is no winning end game here. On everything else, I have felt that the liberals were playing politics, and transparently so. Now, I see the party of Ronald Reagan crumbling before my eyes. I agree with Michelle Malkin and Laura Ingram: If need be, we will rebuild the conservative base from the ground up. And, I fear that, by the time that happens, the President and others similarly stuck in the immigration compromise, will not even know the train has left the station. There's no way you can explain this differently or push it harder and have it work. Seal the borders. Enforce our immigration laws.

I have been a supporter of President Bush since the primary season of 2000. I met him at the airport in Hartford when he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for POTUS. We have supported him through thick and thin with thousands of dollars in donations and by going toe to toe with left wing thugs who opposed his policies. That's the history and now for the present.

There will be not one more dime or iota of support for the Republican Party nor for any Republican who supports the amnesty bill. President Bush and his administration have never come to grips with the fact that a wide open border to the south and the declaration that we are in a War on Terror are two mutually exclusive positions. He hurts the war with islamofascists by not recognizing that it is very hard to convince a large segment of the population that we are at war while we continue to have borders that leak like a sieve.

Cognitive dissonance is rife in Washington DC. It must be something in the air.

Regards,
John Walsh

Troll, troll, troll your post
Gently down the thread
You're a shill for Jorge Arbusto
What was that you said?

Full Disclosure: $15,000,000 in fines -- given that there are (lowball estimate) 12 million illegal immigrants in the country -- is 80 cents per illegal on average.

And the amnesty bill allocates merely $100,000,000 for assimilation -- that is eight bucks and change per person.

And what of the Fort Dix Six, and the 9-11 hijackers who had "only overstayed a student visa" ??

No sale.

BTFW. (Build the ... wall).

OK, so I lied.

It's a dollar and 25 cents per illegal.

So give me amnesty for all my back taxes to make up for it...

It speaks poorly that you fail to answer challenges to your post. As you can see, few people are fooled.

Pass this amnesty legislation and it will be the end of the GOP. It’s as simple as that.

Tell the President that our local county GOP is basically BANKRUPT due to lack of funds coming in. It is directly because we, the grassroots, refuse to send money to a party that has corrupt leaders. The Constitution demands that our borders be protected, and you all have failed us miserably. When Colorado falls to the Democrats, look in the mirror at your complete lack of listening to the base.

I guess since the GOP will not have funds coming in from the base any more, you will just have to keep on pandering to the lobbyists to keep afloat. I campaigned for President Bush twice, and now I feel like a fool for doing so. I feel sold out and rightfully so, since you all have sold us out to the cheap labor lobby. Get the picture?

Say hello to Senator Salazar and soon to be Senator Udall of Colorado. The new Democrat voters you want to enable will make sure Colorado remains in the hands of the Democrats for many years to come. I’m actually glad that President Bush is done in two years, I hate being stabbed in the back.
Build the damn wall, then we will see if the GOP is worth supporting. Do I have your attention it yet? Somehow I doubt it.

By the way, securing the border is not an option, it is your DUTY. Ask the President if you are allowed to answer me back, I would like to hear an explanation as to why your duty has been avoided.

I have another comment you can share with the President. The government is in the business of taking money from illegals. You take in about $6 BILLION a year in social security money paid in by people with invalid Social Security numbers. CORRUPTION!! Social Security does not share these invalid records with Immigration because of CORRUPTION!! The government just keeps the $6 BILLION every year because of CORRUPTION!! Prove me wrong, I’m waiting for an explanation......

Please tell President Bush that I’m ashamed to admit that I voted for him twice.

In my view, the President has done only two things right his entire term in office:

The first were the tax cuts in the immediate aftermath of 9-11 to keep the economy going. Brilliant, and it worked.

The second is taking the fight to the terrorists in the war on terror.

On every other single point, ESPECIALLY illegal immigration, this President has been an abysmal failure.

His Father caused me to leave the Republican Party in 1990 after “read my lips, no new taxes” was broken, I was really hoping GW was different than his old man.

I’m sorry to say, I’m more disappointed in him as President than I was his father. He held so much promise, and he threw it all away.

Sir, I appreciate the White House talking to this forum, a strong conservative base in the country. I understand and hear good folks like Tony Snow and John Kyl and the President calling for "comprehensive" reform. They make a point, though the desire for comprehensive reform is lost on those who want to see border enforcement first. Promises made and promises broken about border enforcement. Why not just put up the wall--some pundits have pointed out the Hoover Dam was a monumental engineering project making a wall on our border look puny. Pass a bill and get hold of the border first. Comprehensive reform in one bill is not necessary.

Also, please please please understand that 99% of us are not xenophobes or anti-immigrant.

Legal immigration is great; illegal immigration is not.

I feel sad having to say that; but the rhetoric we're hearing from the side wanting this bill passed seems to make us sound like bigots. And that is wrong.

Haha! Nice try, no sale. Shut the border, fine your bosses handlers who employ the invaders. No new laws required.

Doom on you for not doing so already.

“With all due respect to you and to President Bush, I am 100% against the proposed bill”

I must say that I am late to this thread and only a little bit into it but yours has got to be the best of the posts so far.

And this is coming from a so-called “Latino” or “Hispanic”, but really just an American Freeper.
