Simmering tensions in the Alabama Senate boiled over Thursday when a Republican lawmaker punched a Democratic colleague in the head before they were pulled apart.
Republican Sen. Charles Bishop claimed that Democratic Sen. Lowell Barron called him a "son of a (expletive)."
"I responded to his comment with my right hand," Bishop said. Alabama Public Television tape captured the punch.
Barron refused to comment and went into a closed-door meeting with other Democrats. Sen. Vivian Figures went into the meeting carrying first aid supplies, but she said he was not hurt.
Bishop said he regretted throwing the punch because "that's not the way grown men solve their problems," but added that he would not immediately apologize to Barron.
The fight came on the final day of the 2007 regular session of the Legislature. Republicans and a few Democrats have protested all session the Democratic majority's Senate rules, saying they were unfair. They want to bring up an election reform bill.
The Senate had just taken a recess Thursday afternoon when Bishop approached the chair where Barron was sitting. Moments later security officers and others rushed to separate the two senators.
Members of the Alabama House said the incident makes the entire Legislature look bad.
"It's certainly a black eye on the Legislature and the Senate in particular," Republican Rep. Jay Love said.

You know what drama queens democrats are, even John Kerry had to have three purple hearts for a couple of band aid woundsl.
You are wrong. Should happen in the U.S. Senate and dueling should be legalized. Then we’ll see more decorum both in our gov’t and our cities.
Sen. Lowell Barron, D-Fyffe, needs to quit whining. Sen. Charles Bishop, R-Jasper needs some coaching. (Gotta give him points, tho)!
Standing tall and waiting for the "Oh, this is so uncivilized behavior" incoming!
bttt
This kind of stuff did happen, and often, in the federal legislature and in state legislatures. Throughout the 19th century, many a House and Senate debate included verbal insults and physical reprisals. The difference is that legislators of old were not pansies like Mr. Barron.
Ain’t that the truth. Semper Fi
So is directing profanity at the man. They both should be punished in some way.
Nice right cross. Too bad he wasn’t standing in front of him.
Yeah, really ! Bishop is my hero. Barron is a rodent tyrant pig of the highest order and has had that coming for 25 years. We got one of those north of the border here in Tennessee. I’d love to see them kick the $hit out of our Speaker, Boss Hogg... I’m tired of us playing nice with these thugs while they laugh in our faces.
“Can we run this guy for president?”

The Senator has good form.
LOL and bravo, Sen. Bishop.
Fistfights are an improvement over duels, I suppose.
Last dying gasp of the AL rodents before we get our rightful majority control. They’re pathetic. Hey, and where is the former coup plotter, Tiny Jim Folsom ? Bishop missed knocking him on his donkey.
Duels are for between men of honor. Sen. Bishop knows Barron is no gentleman, and delivered him a thwap reserved for drunkards and scoundrels. :-)
