Another northern state discussion secession. Deja vu. NY discussed it twice before the Civil War, as did other states. The entire nation ceded their Constitutional authority to secede if they so desired (the argument of the Founding Fathers was, “let them leave if they want. They’ll come running back.”)

Strange how so many turned against this concept when Southern states decided to use this strategy that Northern states had threatened several times before.

What a state of complete morons. I think all Liberals are smoking something that has destroyed their brains. Oh, I forgot, were they born with brains?

Not too sure they will still think it is so hot when they find:

1. Two hostile neighbours aka the United States and Canada (with Harper).
2. Landlocked country and need access fees for external commercial links.
3. Visa access for all Vermonters entering the United States.
4. The US Army could garrison at the borders of Vermont.
5. The leftist majority is reduced Stateside, making the United States redder.

The first signs of balkanization, like the crocus beneath the snow....

Balkanization worked really well, every time it was tried. Expect equal success in the present-day world.

I have a better idea. They can leave, but leave the beautiful land that our ancestors fought to make free. I for one am descended from a Revolutionary War Veteran from Vermont, and I won’t sit still for this just because a handful of loonies have temporarily taken political control there.

Some clever capitalist closet conservative could, however, persuade the nascent “Republic” to make VT a Free Trade/Hong Kong-type tax shelter.

Could work.

Not too sure if they will still be that enthusiastic to secession if they come up here and read this thread. ;-)

They’re gonna have to sell of lot of maple syrup and books to get their own military going. Not sure if I’d defend that state or not and if they secede, we can just swap’em out for Puerto Rico. That way, the flag can stay the same.

“make VT a Free Trade/Hong Kong-type tax shelter”

As someone born in the real Hong Kong, that may be a good idea. But I bet most of the Vermont residents, esp those who support secession, will see red when they hear “free trade” and “Hong Kong”.

It would be ironic if Vermont votes to secede in 2008 but the President-elect Hillary Clinton vows to crush the rebellion of Socialists.

It would be more likely to be one of the “People’s Republics” in Atlas Shrugged.

During the week of the Battle of the Wilderness, the First Vermont Brigade suffered 1,645 dead or wounded out of a total strength of 2,100 including one regimental commander dead and two of his replacements wounded.

The First Vermont suffered 10% of the total Union causalities during the battle.

Perhaps these “gentlemen” should ask those fallen Green Mountain Boys what they think about secession.

Not sure if I’d defend that state or not and if they secede

The USA would defend them, as we defend every GD socialist state in Europe so that they can "notspend" on military, have huge socialist welfare states, and chide us for not having universal healthcare.

It really p's me off when they look down their noses at America for spending "too much" on the military and not enough on socialism. They COULDN'T BE socialist without America providing for their defense.

What we really need is a partial secession mechanism, in which states “secede” from the whole federal social engineering and wealth redistribution apparatus, and otherwise remain part of the union.

Which speaks volumes about our present situation. Half of America (exaggerated) is incorporated in Delaware (hardly a rightwing Masada) because they have generous, laissez-faire state statutes about incorporated entities.
