Calif. gun bill leads the way (barf alert)
Denver Post ^ | 01 june 07

The California state Assembly Tuesday voted to require all new semi-automatic pistols sold in the state to automatically stamp information on shell casings that could help police track down violent criminals.

The California measure, which still has to pass the state Senate, marks an intriguing new development in the war against crime because, unlike some gun-control measures, it doesn't restrict law-abiding citizens' ability to own or carry firearms. Instead, the measure would require that all new semi-automatic pistols sold in California after 2010 contain a microscopic laser etching that will stamp the gun's make, model and serial number on at least two places on the shell casing of a bullet every time the weapon is fired

Just Damn! DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!

I have a SERIOUS confidence problem right now!

And I thought I was GOOD with that.

Damn.

Now, I’m going to run and hide in a hole for awhile, don’t try to find me.

That’s quite amusing, coming from an anachronist like you. Remember why many departments resisted switching to automatics? “Automatics are too hard, too complex for the average officer to use without a great deal of training.”

And there’s a point - which the NYPD has quite nicely proved.

If they buy this weapon they will leave a lot at the scene unless they pick up thier brass after every shooting.

The drive-by types will start using revolvers again...I mean they think logically like this don't they????

Most drive by shooters don’t leave part of thier car a the scene. If they buy this weapon they will leave a lot at the scene unless they pick up thier brass after every shooting.

Fewer than 1% of criminals 'buy' their weapons from legit sources. Most are stolen. They will be leaving brass behind that will point to some innocent citizen who had his home robbed a week before.

I see him loading, I don’t see or hear him shooting.

I guess if your aim is to be the fastest LOAD in town, that’s fine.

But let’s load, shoot, load, shoot.

And then score the shots!

LOL
Separates the men from the boys all the time.

And on some of the competitions, women do quite well too!

That’s always a hoot.

Well my Redhawk has a VERY light trigger and I do carry it. Also the reload was with a six shooter not the eight.

The problem with this legislation, and the underlying reason(I think) behind it, is that the technology that is needed to stamp the shell casing wil make the gun so expensive that it will price average Joe gun buyer out of the market.
This is a backdoor gun ban plain and simple.

Jerry is that fast, and accurate.

I got to see him shoot at the S&W winter nationals. He beats most bottom feeders with his moon clip gun.

He has arms like popeye and the gun barely moves.

"Of course, this will make the casing harder to extract, resulting in more malfunctions"

Not at all, it is so small you couldn't see them without a magnifying glass, these are micro etchings, little larger than the natural swirls the machine leaves when they bore the receiver out.

I know what your thinking, but remember, there is up to 100K of pressure in that chamber before the bullet leaves the barrel thus expanding the brass very tightly. When the pressure releases the brass shrinks back down, but is still tighter than before firing, anyone with a revolver can feel the difference.

What I am saying is that this micro etching is incredibly small right at the end of the brass, you won't see it without a microscope. There will be no drag at all, heck, if you really wanted to you could relieve the material around the stamp and leave the stamp at the height of the chamber and it would still work without notice at all. Carbide like we work with here would never wear with brass or soft steel casings, at least not in 100k rounds minimum I would guess.

I am laughing my butt of that they think this will actually prevent crime, and you and I both know how easy it is to alter it, but as an engineering point of view this very easy to do considering the pressures already applied to the casing and the hammer/firing pin striking already taking place. It is the fact that they would need to keep track of every one of those numbers that bothers both you and I the most I think. This would automatically mean a huge database of gun registry data on guns they have no need to be following around, and lets face it a sawed off shotgun or older gun is more likely to be used in almost all crimes anyway.

Good points, but no matter how done it would increase the force needed for extraction. As the bbl ages/erodes the etcher would be subject to same process, at possibly an increased rate due to gasses swirling/jetting around raised or recessed area. Junk would build up around etcher, thus rendering it unreadable, etc. This idea is technically frought with problems.

As you point out, the freedom implications are even bigger.
