Their outsourced “reformat” customer service is one reason I’m a former loyal customer. They earned it.

the layoffs most likely will be in the USA....their sub-standard outsourced un-intelligeable tech support in india will be kept at a pitance!!!!

I guess that customer service with “Steve” over in India isn’t working out so well?

Dell entirely missed the period where AMD processors reigned supreme. It cost them.

They're only now joining the AMD party, now that their processors are behind the curve.

Every one of those employees laid off should file a class-action suit against Intel. AMD is already pounding on Intel in court for strong-arm, anti-competitive practices. They're ripe for another assault by some of those harmed by those policies.

Dell’s stock was up 2.6% today and is up another 6% in after hours trading, for what that is worth.

restructuring

A correct way of saying "things aren't going too well and we need to cut costs and then reevaluate"...

Don't worry. Their new

their sagging profits...

Looks like Austin is about to be flooded with unemployed. The bars in Round Rock are going to clean up tonight; lots of people drinking their sorrows away.

I was in the market for a Dell back in February until the told me that I could only get it with VISTA and couldn't get a credit for not taking it.

I told them they could keep their computers (or words to that effect).

I hope the layoffs are in the area that has cost them their market share and their reputation, namely the foreign folks who are barely conversant in English and are schooled to try to pass themselves off as Steve. But I suspect they will continue their downward spiral by laying off their productive US employees and keeping those “economical” third world employees. I like my Dell but I won’t be buying another, I need to understand and be understood by the CSR and it ain’t happening these days.

Dell laptops are falling way behind the curve. Last I checked, they don’t even have any new Santa Rosa based ones at all. And certainly no Geforce 8600 based video cards in them.

To all those rejoicing in the loss of 8,000 American jobs. I respectfully suggest you try rooting for the “home team” every once in awhile.

Love my Dells, tech support is pretty good, on major windows crashes you have to really get someone who knows their stuff. But it might take a couple of calls anyway. Have had excellent results and reliability from the computers(more than 10 purchases) for more than 10 years now. My first was a Gateway and it was a POS lemon out of the box.

Just went through really crappy tech support (outsourced)with Linksys on a 3 week old router that died (bought from dell, new replacement came right away), and the new Linksys software is disconnecting the router. Figured this out with Verizon’s DSL tech, who was stellar and an American.

Nationalize Dell, and end the problem of regular layoffs. Problem solved!

Dell, just the latest of corporations whose management decisions choked the goose who laid the golden egg...

Poor designs, cheapest possible execution and massive outsourcing of manufacturing and “customer service” — doesn’t earn U.S. customer satisfaction or LOYALTY...

Dell’s U.S. market share and profits will continue to decline, so layoffs will continue on an increasingly steeper ramp...

Been there, seen that....
