A Disaster: The GOP Caves On Border Security
HughHewitt.com ^ | 5/16/07 | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 05/16/2007 4:14:04 PM PDT by pissant

Word is leaking that the GOP in the Senate are on the verge of agreeing to an immigration bill that has --as a concession to the GOP-- less than half of the fencing promised by law last year.

White flag time on the border, and a national security and thus a political disaster.

The GOP are sending around talking points attempting to make this "compromise" defensible, but it won't and shouldn't fly. Agreeing to it takes the party down the tubes on the issue of border security --because it doesn't provide what the public understands to be border security, a very long, very high fence with a very wide gate.

This is McCain's continuing gift to the GOP, and the immigration absolutists' legacy: Lots and lots of promises and no fence worth calling a fence.

Aren't there 41 GOP senators willing to fight for border security? Apparently not. And they will see the result in their depleted coffers and diminished numbers come November '08. All they have to do is fight for border security, but they won't even do that.

UPDATE: Here are the draft talking points from the GOP. Four pages of crap:

BORDER SECURITY AND IMMIGRATION REFORM

Republicans Standing Together to Fight for Tougher Enforcement and an Immigration System That Better Serves American Interests

As negotiations continue, Republicans are demanding the following from the Democrat majority:

* Beefed-up border security. Republicans are insisting on dramatic and immediate improvements to border security, including 18,000 Border Patrol agents and 370 miles of fencing, as part of a continuous effort to protect the borders.

*Republicans insist that border security improvements must be completed before other reforms can occur. Democrats blocked any "triggers" in last year’s bill.

They ALREADY passed Hunter’s fence bill in Oct. Now the GOP are going to let the dems reduce its scope and length. I say F**K that with a pitchfork.

Some keep telling us border bots that we need to learn to 'compromise'. Compromise? The ONLY thing we've gotten is 700 miles of fence. That's it! And looks like they just compromised that away. Now, some one will claim Bush has added border patrol, national guard. And they've hobbled them as badly as badly as they have us dumb voters.

Some also keep wanting to criticize Hunter's photos. It's been so damn long since this country saw a disciplined, serious MAN they don't know what to do.

Can anyone tell me the difference between Hillary and these 3 on illegal immigration. I can’t.

Telling us we need to defend the borders of Iraq while leaving the USA borders open is simply crazy.

Nominate Rudy or Mccain or Rommney and its hello President Clinton. Hunter seems the only alternative.

Good article. It deserves its own thread.

I don’t get so many calls from the RNC any more. I’ve told them that I send my contributions to Duncan Hunter’s campaign, to Focus on the Family, ACLJ (Not aclu, ACLJ), Handicapped Veterans of America (nice calendars & address stickers), FIRE, Free Republic and a few local ministries.

You can get some cool freeper stuff

and that reminds me, I found a cool tchotchke catalog called “Tagmaster” from Kaeser & Blair that has a windup light that would allow a logo to be put on it, I think it would be a hot seller for Free Republic so I’m pinging JimRob.

The good job in my comments was refering to his job as a possible “plant” by the left to destroy our America.

My apologies for misinterpreting your reply -— well, Vincente Fox, and now his predecessor, have their Manchurian Candidate. And all the while, GWB spending and behaving like he did not know who the Republican party was, or what country he works for. A sorry performance after all the tools we gave him — no Repub could have asked for more, or received more -— and F*****D it up more.

If you want to know the effects of unbridled Immigration, ask an American Indian.
***Ouch, that one kinda hurt. Another group to ask would be the original native South Africans, then the Dutch/Rhodesian South Africans after that. Both allowed unlimited immigration into the same area and it triggered a takeover each time.

It’s obviously the money from the lobbies who will benefit from wage depression. Hotels, transport, resorts, etc.

....private prison corps donate MUCHO, big ag (not 'farmers')Then they take our tax dollars and give 5 to 10 million a year just to LaRaza and all the other ones on top of it. Then they buy the politicians. Never has a society financed it's own downfall like we are.

This is about the 'haves' and the 'have nots' and our collective, sold out government just put us in our places by golly.

"We the people". Well, it was a nice idea.

I can not see the angle for Bush to support amnesty and not closing the border. It can’t be for votes. It can’t be for the Republican party at large. The only conclusion I can come up with is he is profiting financiallly or he really believes in an open border. What do you all think?

Rove and his groupies, it's all politics, power. But with Bush, I do think it is ideological. It's become a 'passion' for him. And I find that unsettling in the face of every kind of evidence to the contrary available to anyone.

The amnesty provision will also cover people like the ones in Jersey and anyone who has entered illegally , including any terrorists who have been lost in the shuffle.

You know they're selling America down the river, and they WILL pass an amnesty that is going to destroy America. Once that happens, the GOP is dead. Period. It will be the end of the GOP.

They're going to allow illegals to bring their families here now too so the Republicans don’t stand a chance of EVER winning another election. The RATS have been signing Mexicans up as Democrats for several years and they’ve been telling them that it's the GOP and President Bush who don't want them here. GOP Senators are stupid if they think they won’t get voted out of office too. Traitors. The whole stinking bunch of them.

I’m ready for a ‘committee’ instead of a president, like Sweden has. How ‘bout Hunter, Romney, and Fred? What do you think? :<)

All patriotic Americans should unite to boycott the remainder of the Republican debates to send a very loud and reverberant message to the Republican Party that this sell out will not go unpunished and without them suffering a huge backlash!

Do you think that one of the reasons Sam Brownback cannot catch on as a presidential candidate is his own enthusiasm for open borders?
