Sky News Update:

Terror Chief 'Killed In Internal Battle'

Updated: 09:59, Tuesday May 01, 2007

The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq has been killed, Iraq's Interior Ministry has said.

Abbu Ayyub al Masri was killed in an "internal battle", according to the ministry.

However, there is no independent confirmation of the report.

Brigadier-General Abdul Kareem Khalaf told the Reuters news agency: "We have definite intelligence reports that al Masri was killed today."

Another source in the ministry also said al Masri had been killed, Reuters said.

The US military has not confirmed the reports - but it has a $5m bounty on the terror chief's head.

There has been increasing friction between Sunni Islamist al Qaeda and other Sunni Arab insurgent groups in Iraq.

Local groups are said to be angered over al Qaeda's indiscriminate killing of Iraqi civilians.

Al Masri, an Egyptian, assumed the leadership of al Qaeda in Iraq after Jordanian militant Abu Musab al Zarqawi was killed in a US air strike in June 2006.

The US military has described al Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al Muhajir, as a close al Zarqawi associate.

I meant to type north of Baghdad, not north of Iraq...

Anyhow, didn’t General Petraeus just talk about how the situation in Ramadi have totally turned around as the Tribes have started to come to their senses and support the U.S. and chase Al Qaeda out of Dodge...

I think Al Qaeda started killing some of the tribal leaders, probably in order to intimidate them.

Looks like it was a bad move.

Helen Thomas was married to AP WH Correspondent Frank Cormier. During and shortly after the Nixon Administration. Both were older people, though not outright elderly, when they married. Cormier came down with Alzheimers and died after 11 yrs. I report, you decide. You said “who can doubt that she’s a virgin?” Possibly you didn’t have all the facts to factor in. Do I KNOW she’s not virginal? Nope. But she was MARRIED, so.....

I heard but can’t recall which “expert” said it, but that in Ramadi attacks formerly averaged 80 either per day or per week, and that now that EIGHTY has shrunk down to TWO.

I greatly hope it is true, because it will be a huge victory for us . However we need to wait for the confirmation of the US military, we have heard this before from the Iraqis and it turned out to be wrong.

FoxNews Alert:

Body transfered to US custody for identification. [They do apparently have al Masri’s fingerprints on file.]

Still no confirmation of identity.

Yep.

Given the level of violence in Democrat run cities, I think its time to defund them and the demrats to leave.

They probably have DNA records from several local goat herds which will enable them to confirm his identity.

This is what I like to see. The Iraqis doing it themselves and standing up for themselves instead of the Americans.

Me too. Hopefully, this will give them a lot of encouragement!

Fantastic news if true. Another one bites the dust...let the next one step up to the same plate and suffer ther same fate.

In other news...Harry Reid was said to be disturbed by reports that it was infighting between militants that killed Al Masri and indicated that this was, "further proof of the ineffectiveness of President Bush's surge efforts in Iraq and all the more reason to cut and run." [/sarcasm]
