Gunman on Campus; Stay inside your building, away from windows; Shooting incident at West Ambler Johnston Hall

This can happen anywhere- in the mall, at the ballgame, in the subway, at the town fair, etc....
BTW. I am still waiting to hear the status of my best friend's daughter who is a sophomore engineering student at Virginia Tech. Thank you.
I am ending my participation in any discussion about guns on campus. I’d rather focus on the fact that there are at least 32 people dead and my prayers for them.
A bunker-type mentality, however, is the only thing that would realistically be effective in preventing a motivated terrorist attack on a university. Sneaking some guns on campus would be very easy unless the schools are on perpetual lockdown and the terrorists could just go room to room and shoot.
The same goes for shopping malls, movie theaters, parks and anywhere else where people gather.
“9mm” usually implies that the weapon is a semiautomatic (i.e., self-loader, as opposed to a revolver) pistol. That means a detachable magazine capacity of at least 10 rounds (’bullets’). Common sizes are 10, 12, 15, 17, and 19; the largest commonly available are 30. Larger capacity magazines are generally not available due to technical issues with reliability and bulk.
A weapon with a detachable magazine means that it can be reloaded in a few seconds or less - simply push the magazine release button, the magazine drops out, and slam a new one home. Some guns can then immediately begin firing again, others you have to actuate the slide (pull the top half of the gun back and then release it) to load the top round. Reloading does take the use of both hands. Either way, a reload, while physically easy to do (even on a revolver) provides a few seconds in which someone could charge the gunman and take him down.
You know this and you're not doing anything about it. Sheesh!
Three hour rampage by deranged shooter/shooters. -Hundreds- of LEO respond.
Three hours go by. 30 plus dead.
THREE HOURS!
By noon CDT a complete lack of new details other than an increase in the body count.
The spin is in progress......
There are clearly forces in the East and forces in the West who are behaving in ways that work to break down Western civilization...I sort of think that both sides may feel they are manipulating each other...
Both fronts are certainly our enemies. IMHO...
Among commonly available sizes, and depending on the handgun, up to 30 round *magazines* are available.
The last “clip” fed automatic pistol that I can recall is the Mauser broomhandle, which uses 10 round stripper clips in a fixed box magazine.
Grab and dash of the wounded is the only thing that makes sense if the shooter is nearby and armed with any kind of a decent rifle. Until the shooter is neutralized or moves off to a total different area EMS wouldn’t and shouldn’t go to the victims.
save it for the politics threads.
On a handgun, I've seen them go up to 50 rounds with the magazine protruding out of the grip. 15 rounds is most common 9mm mag you will see.
Again, I am not going to discuss guns on campus at this point. It’s taking my focus off of praying for the families which is far more important at this point.
We need to get (our allies?) the Japanese, the Koreans and yes, even the Chinese to protest the use of the word ‘Asian’ to describe these muslim terrorists.
Or “W-estern O-riental G-entleman” “WOG”.
Keep safe sir.
It would seem to me, if this were terrorism, the terrorist would keep shooting until killed, and would not have killed himself unless he ran out of ammo. In addition, reports of the "girlfriend" scenario seem very hard to believe. If that is the case, the shooter would have be be mentally ill to retaliate in a manner such as this. Now being reported, this is the deadliest shooting of this type in American history
Exactly right! On Threat Matrix it was posted it would be miltiple targets for maximum terror
Dawn,we are talking about Virginia TECH so there are probably lots of Asian students at the school.
Sorry for the stereotype but its true.Engineering and hard science majors are frequently Asian-China,India,etc.
