Sean Hannity Interview, 2007:
HANNITY: Let me move on. And the issue of guns has come up a lot. When people talk about Mayor Giuliani, New York City had some of the toughest gun laws in the entire country. Do you support the right of people to carry handguns?
GIULIANI: I understand the Second Amendment. I support it. People have the right to bear arms. When I was mayor of New York, I took over at a very, very difficult time. We were averaging about 2,000 murders a year, 10,000...
HANNITY: You inherited those laws, the gun laws in New York?
GIULIANI: Yes, and I used them. I used them to help bring down homicide. We reduced homicide, I think, by 65-70 percent. And some of it was by taking guns out of the streets of New York City.
So if you're talking about a city like New York, a densely populated area like New York, I think it's appropriate. You might have different laws other places, and maybe a lot of this gets resolved based on different states, different communities making decisions. After all, we do have a federal system of government in which you have the ability to accomplish that.
From a 2000 interview with Tim Russert:
Tim Russert: How about registration of ALL handguns?
Rudy Giuliani: Uh, you know I'm in favor of that. I've been on your show many times, talking about, uh, the program that the president (Clinton) talked about in his state of the union speech - I have been giving speeches about and talked about on your show for the last 10 to 15 years. Which is, I believe, is that we should treat the possession of a handgun the way we treat driving an automobile.
And therefore a person who wants to possess a handgun should pass a written test, should be able to pass a physical test in the actual use of the gun, and should have to demonstrate good moral character and a REASON to have the gun.
That those should be, essentially there should be a UNIFORM LAW PASSED BY CONGRESS that says that every state has to administer that, the way we say that we're not going to let you drive an automobile if you're too young, we're not going let you drive an automobile if you had a bad record, and uh, every state has a slightly different variation of that, but every state has a uniform law that guarantees our safety. I think the two things are good analogies, and I've been arguing for that since at least 1980.
On one hand you have Rudy Giuliani stating that people have the right to bear arms, while at the same time (which is something neither he nor Hannity saw fit to mention) he was doing everything in his power to see to it that almost nobody in New York City could exercise that right.
What people have to understand is that "the right to keep and bear arms" in New York City is a "right" that is pretty much afforded only to law enforcement officers, licensed security guards, and celebrities. This sounds like the kind of policy that would come from a bunch of star-crossed dipsh!ts like the Clinton administration.
yet the traditionalist / vote republican / knuckle draggers howled this past fall when those of us pissed with republican nonsense threatened to take our votes elsewhere or sit out, and pleaded with us to stay in camp...just so we stay in power
IMO - were seeing this all over again, have another cup of coffee and call me in Oct '08 - youll be singing the same tune
BTW - probably the most entertaining post of the day - honestly
You are so right. They hate it so much they have tried to make it their own by twisting it to suit their own agendas. Of course, since it was uttered by the genius Ben Franklin it just doesn't fit into their liberal logic. Somehow, defending oursleves against the islamo-goblins is the same as tearing up the Constitution.
Seems that we have a lot of people here telling us that we have to vote for Rooty and won't take 'NO' for an answer. Maybe we haven't been plain enough.
Before I would vote for Rooty I would nail my whanger to the chair and set the house on fire. Really.
Then the restrictions of it have to be reasonable and sensible. You cant just remove that right. Youve got to regulate, consistent with the Second Amendment.
Regarding his proposals, personally I don't think handgun bans are reasonable at all, nor is the assault weapons ban, which bans rifles solely based on their looks. There's no legitimate social need to ban ugly looking rifles. Licensing by definition includes the right of denial, that won't hold up. Obviously Rudy disagrees.
Then there are his actions. "Stop and Frisk" to check for illegal handguns. Unconstitutional, I'd say that falls under unreasonable.
The manufacturers lawsuit, rejected by the courts, Congress, and the President. Reasonable to consider it unreasonable.
I don't trust Rudy's ability to make "reasonable" judgements when it comes to firearms. His concern isn't the second amendment, it's law enforcement.
"I didn't want to pile on."
Most of these (endless) Rudy threads remind me of AC's (I believe) definition of a liberal:
"Anyone unwilling to take his own side in an argument."
Supporting a candidate who favors gun-control and abortion (among many other odious things) is just fine--
on Democratic Underground. But that's the great thing about FR: you can speak your piece.*
NOt on public roads at least..
Which is a big distinction from registering "horses"
I'm more worried about Rudy as President. The linguini spined GOP in Congress will at least make a show of fighting Hillary.
Exactly, a "moderate" Republican in the White House is more dangerous than a liberal Democrat.
Now that's just silly. Rudy is going to be worse than Hillary!, really?
It's not about Hillary and Rudy, it's about how the Congress would respond.
The gun control issue will be off the table in 2008 if the SCOTUS rules as expected on the 2nd District finding for a 2nd Amendment INDIVIDUAL right to bear arms.
Last I looked we were a constitutional republic. That means that states may have different registration regulations, but they have to be faithful to the SCOTUS ruling, just as much as the US Congress.
I do too.
Remember. You do not need a license to OWN an automobile, just to operate it on PUBLIC ROADS
I don't believe that. I shouldn't have to become a sheep in order to leave my front door. Besides there is still that pesky Second Amendment.
Ouch! That's gonna leave a mark!
Don't punish the law abiding citizens because idiots choose to commit violent crimes. Guns don't kill people. PEOPLE kill people.
This isn't about Rudy, or the election or anything else but you...seek help.
Sincerely.
Glad you are sincere. But I could have sworn a primary was going on.
Invalid as it is.
