Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton faces a possible new threat to her presidential ambitions.
Former Vice President Al Gore has again been entertaining offers to run for president. Gore has been discussing a run for a third party nomination with family and close aides.
"Al Gore has been energized by the attention he's been receiving as America's leading environmentalist," a political source close to Gore said. "He believes this might present an opportunity to become president or at least try again."
Sources close to Gore said Ralph Nader has sought to recruit the former vice president to run as the candidate for the Green Party. They said Gore has not rejected the offer and was consulting with family and friends to determine the feasibility of such a candidacy.
At this point, Gore stands behind Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama in any race for the Democratic presidential nomination. But the polls report that many Democrats who support Clinton could switch their support to Gore.
Still, Gore, largely estranged from former President Bill Clinton since 2000, is said to have concluded that he stands no chance of beating Hillary for the Democratic presidential nomination. But sources close to Gore said the former vice president believes that he could present himself as a genuine liberal in any general election that would include Clinton.
For her part, Clinton has been monitoring Gore's feelers regarding a presidential race. The sources said Clinton has expressed concern that a third party effort by Gore could hurt her chances in the general election.
"Gore is invulnerable on several issues," a political strategist familiar with Gore's consultations said. "Unlike Obama, he can't be attacked as inexperienced; he has much more experience than Hillary. And, he was Bill's vice president."
Nader, a harsh critic of then-President Bill Clinton, was for a time the leader of the Green Party. Nader has used the movement for previous races for the presidency. Nader's campaign was believed to have spoiled Gore's efforts for the presidency in the 2000 election, particularly in the state of Florida where George W. Bush won by only 537 votes. In 1996 and 2000, Nader was the presidential nominee of the Green Party.
Over the last month, Gore's profile has skyrocketed in the wake of his Academy Award for his documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," which examines global warming. On March 21, Gore testified to two congressional panels that global climate change marked the greatest danger in U.S. history and issued a 10-point plan that included an immediate freeze on new emissions from cars and power plants.
"This is not a normal time," Gore said in his first appearance on Capitol Hill since 2001. "We are facing a planetary emergency. I'm fully aware that that phrase sounds shrill to many people's ears. But it is accurate."
Although a handful of Republicans criticized and questioned his research and the factual basis for many of his claims, many Democrats on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee viewed Gore's appearance as a homecoming. The Democrats, with Sen. Hillary Clinton sitting on the committee, said Gore was leading a nationwide movement that sought drastic changes in the environment.
"You have acted for us," said Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Sen. Barbara Boxer, California Democrat. "You have acted more than anyone else."
The sources said Gore, who also serves as an adviser to Google, would quietly test the waters in a series of polls in the spring of 2007. They said his high profile will probably be maintained over the next few months when he publicizes his latest book, "The Assault on Reason" in May. The book is said to be an indictment of American politics.
It seems that the powers that be decided to front load the primaries so that the major party nominees can capture the nomination by February 2008. However, their decision may backfire, for it will allow other groups more time to organize and raise funds for a Presidential race on a third party ticket. If Giuliani captures the GOP nomination, there will be a groundswell among gun owners, conservative Christians, and libertarians to seek an alternative.
This isn't bout patriotism. This is about ambition.
It's always about ambition.
Of course, you're right on all three points. Still, Algore has to know that he can't possibly win the Presidency as a Green....but his running would topple the Clintons for sure. He has to know that.
So where do you think his ambitions lay, other than the ambition to topple the Clowntoons?
IMHO, whether he sees it or not, I see it as a noble ambition.
I'd like to see the liberals screaming at him for that. I think popcorn is in order.
Please do run Al, what a great way to get back at the Clinton's.
The moonbats don't like Hillary, but they do like Al.
I got the same e-mail - ain't it great?
I can't believe I didn't see this coming, what with all that global warming hoopla!
"This is a threat."
A threat that would serve what purpose?
To make sure he gets a seat at the table? To make sure that his green ideas are part of the platform?
None of these would satisfy Al. They would just be promises that don't have to be kept by Queen Hillary.
I believe you are right that Al knows what the consequences would be of him running as a 3rd party candidate. I just really wonder, though, if he would tell himself, as the all-seeing Goracle, that his message of certain doom for the planet is so important that he has to run anyway.
He has turned into a religious nutcase over Global Warming, and those types don't necessarily act rationally.
I've heard Hitlery would just glare at Algore and he would walk away like a little mouse. Sweet revenge if he runs.
Bingo... I would even support Gore...
In getting the Democrat nomination. As I said in post #306, I think this is a threat designed to keep the Clintons in check. And I think it's a pretty shrewd move on his part, provided he doesn't end up dead in a single-car wreck.
How about Al-imentary Canal, or AL Canal for short.
Perfect. Simply Perfect.
This time, for a change, the 3rd party candidate would serve as the spoiler for the DUmmies.
Run, Al, Run - 3rd party all the way!
Get Nader as your VP running mate too.
OK, so you think Big Al is trying to squeeze the DNC for the nomination under the threat of going Green (and the Rats lose for sure)?
I'm not sure Big Al has those kind of stones...unless the Clintonistas don't really have the hold on the DNC that is perceived by many.
This should have its own thread. Please post as a vanity and thank you for passing it along.
HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.
HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

Hmm... I hadn't seen those facts on Pres.Bush's home. I heard it was pretty neat, but it is interesting to see the whole story.
I don't believe it.
In between his bouts of meglomania Gore has shown sign of political sense. For a guy like him to get elected from a red state like Tennesee is one sign of this and latching onto Bill Clinton is another.
What he did to the country after the 2000 election shows he will calculate - he played that just long enough to get him a lifetime martyr appointment but no so long as to get blamed for paralyzing the government.
He can see what happened to Leiberman who went from lukewarm Democratic support to almost none after he ran independent.
Instead...
1. Floating this balloon keeps Ralph Nader out of the race.
2. Forces Democratic candidates to focus on global warming to prevent his entry.
3. Gives him the opportunity to form an exploratory committee, if he wants to, to collect donations and run ads.
Net Effects:
1. Neutral to Hillary - keeps Nader out but forces Democrats to the left to guard their liberal flank - shouldn't generate too much animosity.
2. Positive Gore's ego.
I think this is a fantasy story, not at all real. No way this can happen. I don't think it will affect the outcome anyway, as I don't believe any Dem will be able to beat Rudy.
Go for it Al!

Go for it Al!<<
I missed the part about Nader being involved - that cuts out any up side at all for Democrats.
