Senate backs troop withdrawal from Iraq

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday endorsed a March 31, 2008, target date for withdrawing American combat troops from Iraq, moving Congress a step closer to a showdown with President George W. Bush over the war.

By a vote of 50-48, the Senate defeated an amendment that would have stricken the withdrawal language from a $121.6 billion bill that mostly would fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A final vote on the bill is expected later this week.

I won't forget...I'm from Nebraska. Hagel is a disgrace. He wouldn't even win this State if he ran for President. Nelson...he's a democrat masquerading as a "moderate." His vote is no surprise. Disappointing, but no surprise. I hope all those Nebraska "conservatives" that voted for Nelson this past November are pleased with their vote.

Nebraska really is annoyingly bipartisan. I blame that whole unicameral thing.

I'm trying to figure out whether Nelson talked Hagel into this vote or whether Hagel talked Nelson into it.

Nelson was re-elected with over 70% in '06. I expect much the same with Hagel if he runs again in '08.

It'll be interesting to see how state papers react to the two Cornhusker senators being that decisive in a war bill.

If he doesn't veto, it may not be because he doesn't hate the pullout language in the bill. We all know he does. The problem is that the Rats are evilly clever with this bill-- it's got the money for Iraq in it. Veto the bill, no money for Iraq. You know the Dims won't pass another bill without this pullout crap in it. It's a terrible spot.

Bull crap. If he does NOT veto it it will be because he's a RINO and a coward; not because the demoncraps have been clever with this bill. He can always sign an executive order for more money to go to the defense of our nation and our Troops in Iraq until the demoncraps are forced to send him a legitimate bill.

The Senate has never committed outright treason before.

You're forgetting perhaps when a majority of Republican Senators (cheered on by Hannity and Rush) voted to end the bombing in Kosovo when our troops were in harm's way.

What is your problem? You are the only one talking about Bush. If you're talking to yourself, stop posting to me. I'm not talking about him.

Comments on a public board don't matter. Praying for our leaders and supporting our troops matter. Thanks OhioWFan for all you do.

Have a great day, I'm lost in what you're saying and I don't feel like reading back through this convoluted conversation. I'm sure your heart's in the right place.

Lets see the Bush that has not done Jack you know what about the borders. Tied our troops hands with ridiculous rules of engagement that reminiscent of Vietnam. Yeah the same W that has only used the veto pen once. But like you said I guess we really do not know him.

That is indeed what I had heard. This was allowed to go forward so it could be vetoed and sent back for the real battle.

I'm sorry I should have clarified....

Since the conversation was referring to President Bush and his vetos (or lack thereof), I was using the time reference of the last six years.

This is different from the spending bills he didn't veto. This is overtly supporting our enemies in time of war.

The really F*&KING INFURIATING THING is if all of REPUBLICANS - this means you HAGEL AND SMITH, had vote YEA on the amendment, it would have passed and the timetable would have been REJECTED.

Both Hagel and Smith should be stripped of their committee assignments and thrown out of the caucus.

Imagine if:

"Sorry men, we gotta pull back, leave the Nazis in France. Nancys orders."

"Yes! The holocaust deniers can now rule! I win! I win! I win! We can repeat the mistakes of the past!"

Seems I`ll now have to change this poster below to "Somebody forgot and demands everyone else forget so it can happen again"

"When the President vetoes this treasonous and defeatist bill he should go on national TV and address the nation on why he is vetoing this bill and tell the democrats and their terrorists allies to go f*** themselves, we are not leaving Iraq before we crush terrorism there."

Verily, thou art correct, jveritas.

But thou art confusing our current President with a man who has the balls to stand up to Congress....
