Using this standard – create in consultation with technical experts in the environmental community, architects, engineers, and others – the bill does not discriminate against any bulb type or technological composition," said Harman's announcement. "But it does create a standard that makes sense for the market, for the environment, and for America's energy future."

This movement has nothing to do with conserving energy. It is another attempt by socialists and communists to eliminate free enterprise and wrest power from the people to control the masses.

>>>>the European Union says they soon simply won't be available and now the U.S. is considering new rules that effectively would ban the incandescent light bulb.

What is suppose to be used for hatching and brooding?

First they regulated our toilets and now our lightbulbs. Do they really think that is why we send them to DC?

The founding fathers would be proud. /s

I support energy conservation, who doesn't? The wackos want someone else's Utopia on your dime. That's not worth supporting. Switching to fluorescent would save energy however the cost saving are spread out over time.

BTW, U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo, R-Ill has worked with U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter on many manufacturing issues.

As with DDT and freon follow the money. Who benefits with this legislation? If they take regular inexpensive bulbs which has lots of productive capacity and many inexpesive suppliers off the market, what do you think will happen to the prices of these alternatives (which are already expensive)? Any savings will be captured by the producers of the new most likely patented light bulbs (and the congress critters who get their contributions).

The lighting out of these alternative bulbs I agree is also poor. We use them selectively for night light type applications.

I am convinced that the elite folks will only be happy once we are back in caves huddling in the dirt for warmth (or dead). They will still get to tool around in their jets and live in their 10,000 sq foot homes.

disagree with you completely -- the fluorescent bulbs save electricity and last longer. I don't see why incandescent bulbs should be allowed any more. We don't allow smoke belching factories in the hearts of our cities, nor smoke belching cars, so why not retrict these old bulbs?

yeah. why let people buy their light bulbs at 4 for 99 cents, when you can make them buy them for a buck and a half apiece.

it's for their own good y'know.

and this is supposed to be the party of the 'little people'?

Now my wife AND the government want me to pitch my big-bulb Christmas lights.

I noticed that last December people were beginning to hoard the bulbs after the light sets were gone.

Great, now we'll have to use flourescents exclusively, which contain mercury, and don't work worth a damn in the cold.

The world is gonna end unless we change our lifestyles. That means I won't reduce my 20x normal energy usage and that you will not only have to use fluorescent lights but that you will have to replace numerous light fixtures in your home.

Oh and these new bulbs are 10x the cost of the original and save a minimum amount of energy.

True, the basic premise of a free society is that the law abiding should be free to do as they choose.
The government knows this and also knows that the only real way they can interfere with the free citizens is to make them criminals.
If the government passes enough laws, eventually everyone will be criminals thus giving the government a reason to control them.

Light Pollution (If you think it's a joke, think again. The movement seeks to change laws)

Light Pollution

At the beginning of the 21st century, humanity is losing a valuable and beautiful part of its heritage. For the first time in history, poorly designed and badly aimed lighting is denying vast numbers of humanity a view of the night sky. Urban sky glow now pollutes nearly all of Britain's night skies. As amateur astronomers we have a responsibility to guard our night time environment against light pollution.

I'm amazed at how quickly a dumb idea spreads. These bulbs are not good for all uses. They are no good in refrigerators and ovens. They don't fit in all fixtures. People on a limited income may find the cost prohibitive.
I use them everywhere I can, but I resent the government telling me what kind of bulbs I should buy. I resent the government's interference with my choice of toilet, and now light bulbs.

Lightbulbs are just the next environmentalist (socialist) target.
They banned freon and made getting your A/C recharged expensive.
The made us all use water saving toilets so that we have to double flush.
Those stupid waterbased paints are not even close to being as good as the oil based paints when you go to paint your house.
What do the socialist world government creeps want us to use for lighting in refrigerators, freezers or ovens? Those CF bulbs won't make it.

First of all, the article is a mish-mash of various proposals. Westchester County, for example, is tallking about banning incandescents from government buildings -- in which case good for them. As I takpayer, I'd like to see the government cutting its own energy costs.

But banning the sale of incandescents from one private party to another, even if you believe that the goal is worthy, is not only intrusive but unnecessary; The light quality of CFs keeps getting better, the price keeps going down, and they keep getting more and more popular, if the amount of space they occupy on store aisles is any indication.

The market can handle this fine, especially when LED lamps become more cost-effective. and I predict that in ten years, most of the incandescents sold will be for specialty use (like appliances) or places that want to be historically accurate.

I've gone mostly to CF -- the only incandescents left are the ones I don't use much, so the old bulbs haven't burned out yet, and the ones on dimmer switches. I'm not actively removing working incandescents, but I'm changing over by attrition. If you haven't looked at CF lately, look again -- the purplish tint of the early models is gone, and they have fourescents that are every bit as bright as incandescent floodlights, after the first 30 seconds to a minute.

Aside from consumers already havign an incentive to switching over, the power companies have an incentive to subsidize their use, at least in places that are near capacity. The more folks can cut usage, the longer they can go without building more generating capacity.

I don't get the advertized life span out of CF bulbs, but I don't get near the advertised life out of incandeascents, either -- I have dirty power, and need to get a whole-house line conditioner, among other wiring improvements.
