Posted on 03/19/2007 3:37:22 PM PDT by Miztiki

I'm having surgery on my vocal cords next week and need ideas on what foods are easy to swallow. Can you help?

Conservative?
apple sauce, jello, chicken broth and some chicken soups, yogurt, tea w/honey, puddings, nutri-drinks, some baby food isn't bad.

Liberal?
crackers with hot sauce, very well done crisp steak, fries and celery. Tossed salad with carrots, celery, hard croutons.
deep fried onions, chicken fried steak with bacon grease gravy, lots of popcorn, corn chips, tortilla chips and pretzels with jalapeno dip. Indian, Mexican, French foods

The scotch is a decent idea.....

I'm not having surgery, though.

Although many days, I do think I need a lobotomy.

It didn't even occur to me that I could call about this stuff before my next appointment. I guess I got stuck on the "oh my gosh, I won't be able to eat" part.

I cook everything from scratch and agree that it tastes so much better. I've always been pretty skinny and I certainly don't need to lose any weight, so I am hoping that dairy products will be ok. I'll call tomorrow.

There are some really good ideas here that I never would have thought of. You're a big help and I thank you!

Yikes,

Surgery on vocal cords?

Do they actually do that?

Perhaps you mean surgery that will have impact on the vocal cords? (Any intubation will prevent the vocal cords from functioning properly.)

Whatver, good luck, and I sincerely hope that the procedure goes well.

The most satisfying meal I had after gall bladder removal was fried chicken and artichokes. Sounds funny but I was not able to eat either for about 2 years before the surgery.

As far as the throat surgery, avoid acidic and salty food. Nothing will go down well for the first few days, try chipped ice to keep hydrated. Ensure sips now and then will be enough to keep the body from breaking down muscle for energy. Otherwise, you should be okay, the average American carries enough fat stores to survive on minimal food for a few weeks. The key thing is not to get dehydrated.

I'm sure you could go online to Web MD and see what they say about it.

Cheese soup by the gallon, and a very dark, healthful, substantial beer(again, take by the gallon).

I hear ya doc. It sounds like we both went the same route.

I was diagnosed in October of 2005. I was on a fat free (as close as possible anyway) and fried food free diet. I still am a little skittish about eating food with fat. I sure would like to sink my teeth into a shake and bake pork chop.

Virtually all non spicy food after you've put it in the blender on puree.

Seriously, consider baby food with some salt added for taste.

I had the same kind of surgery. It was no big deal for me. I just could not talk for a couple of weeks and I had more trouble with that than eating. Your list is good. How about Popsicles? I had a polyp and had been coughing for several months. It was so bad that I was passing out from the coughing. I have not had any more trouble and that was about 5 years ago. Good luck.

One of my favorites when I have anything wrong with my throat, be it cold, flu, bad gum infection that makes it hard to swallow (lol don't ask.. had to have a wisdom tooth pulled last week) is Campbell's Box Noodle Soup.

Stuff is good, filling and is super easy to eat, its just soup and noodles.

Surgery is fairly common in people who sing. I know one who had surgery and he is still having to take it easy for a while every year. When I had it about 5 years ago, I did not have any trouble eating. I had a polyp.

Yoplait Strawberry Banana yogurt

Milkshakes with yogurt, ice cream, milk or ice, and maybe flavoring or chocolate syrup. Obviously not a diet food, but most can be obtained sugar free or no sugar added.
