How two teens were recruited for jihad
An illuminating piece by Mushtaq Yusufzai and Carol Grisanti for NBC News (thanks to all who sent this in):
"We were told to fight against Israel, America and non-Muslims," said Muhammed Bakhtiar, 17, explaining why he wanted to become a suicide bomber. "We are so unhappy with our lives here. We have nothing," he said.
Last month, Bakhtiar and his school friend, Miraj Ahmad, also 17, left their home, families, and boarding school in Buner, a district of the Malakand Division of the Northwest Frontier Province. Their destination was the Muridke madrassa right outside of Lahore, Pakistans second-largest city. The madrassa or religious school is run by the Jamaat-ud-Daawah, the charity linked to the outlawed terrorist organization, Lashkar e Taiba. And Lashkar e Taiba has links to al-Qaida.
The grounds of this madrassa looks much like the campus of any exclusive boys boarding school except for the bearded armed guards sporting Kalashnikovs checking all those who come and go. There is a cricket field, swimming pool, all sorts of sport activities, and horses too. In addition to religious instruction, the school offers computer sciences, engineering and pre-med classes for students ranging in age from six to 17.
It also offers jihad.
"We read about jihad in books and wanted to join," said Ahmad. "We wanted to go to the Muridke madrassa so we would have a better life in the hereafter."
Recruited at local high school
Ahmad said that he and his friend Bakhtiar were recruited at their high school in Buner. The recruiter offered to take the boys to Muridke for two weeks of training and then to Peshawar where they would be introduced to people and make contacts.
"We were told it is our choice to become a freedom fighter or a suicide bomber," explained Ahmad, who had a neat beard and wore a white Muslim prayer cap. "But we should never fight against Pakistan."
Every morning the students were taught Islamic studies; afternoons were reserved for sports. Jihadi training was given in the evenings; two classes a night.

"Italian hostage exchange attacked"
Natasha Bita, Rome
March 29, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NATO criticised Italy yesterday for trading Taliban prisoners for the life of a hostage, as the Italian Senate voted to keep troops in Afghanistan.
After a closed-door NATO meeting in Brussels, US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns revealed that NATO members were angry at Italy's decision last week to negotiate the release of five imprisoned Taliban terrorists in return for the freedom of an Italian journalist kidnapped in Afghanistan.
"There was a clear sense in the room that none of us should agree to negotiate the release of hostages in return for terrorists," Mr Burns told Reuters."

"House votes to protect 'John Does' on flights"
By Audrey Hudson
March 27, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "House Republicans tonight surprised Democrats with a procedural vote to protect public-transportation passengers from being sued if they report suspicious activity -- the first step by lawmakers to protect "John Doe" airline travelers already targeted in such a lawsuit.
After a heated debate and calls for order, the motion to recommit the Democrats' Rail and Public Transportation Security Act of 2007 back to committee with instructions to add the protective language passed on a vote of 304-121.
Republicans said the lawsuit filed by six Muslim imams against US Airways and "John Does," passengers who reported suspicious behavior, could have a "chilling effect" on passengers who may fear being sued for acting vigilant."

School officials were not releasing students in an after-school program Wednesday around 4:30 p.m. until a situation on East Durango had cleared.
Police arrested a 39-year-old man from the 1300 block of East Durango, near the Alamodome, after a phone call he made to News 4 WOAI.
He told us about threats he felt were being made to him and his civil rights. He mentioned he had built three bombs, but had dismantled them. He asked what he needed to do to get help, and then proceeded to make a threat to kids on a school bus.
News 4 WOAI called police with the man's information and threats.
Dozens of police officers, the SWAT team and firefighters arrived at his home a short time later and found what they are calling components to make a bomb. They arrested the man, who, they learned, also had four outstanding warrants.
Police say he did not resist arrest, but instead confirmed to them what he had told News 4 only about an hour earlier. Chief Bill McManus told News 4, "He stated he had built some bombs last night, said he already disassembled them, but was in the process of making another." News 4 WOAI will bring more on this developing stories at 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m..

"Police seize 5 war protesters"
Wednesday, March 28, 2007
BY WAYNE WOOLLEY
Star-Ledger Staff
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Five opponents of the Iraq war were arrested in Newark yesterday after sitting on the floor for 40 minutes in the lobby of the building where U.S. Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez have offices.
The activists -- all members of the anti-war New Jersey Occupation Project -- last week had asked the senators, both Democrats, to sign a pledge to vote against a $100 billion spending measure that pays for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

They just showed people being rescued from the 4th floor being taken down the ladder.
I hope everyone is safe.
