Not since Teddy Roosevelt took on Tammany Hall a century ago has a New York politician closely linked to urban reform looked like presidential timber. But today exNew York mayor Rudy Giuliani sits at or near the top of virtually every poll of potential 2008 presidential candidates. Already, Giulianis popularity has set off a stop Rudy movement among cultural conservatives, who object to his three marriages and his support for abortion rights, gay unions, and curbs on gun ownership. Some social conservatives even dismiss his achievement in reviving New York before 9/11.
An August story on the website Right Wing News, for instance, claims that Giuliani governed Gotham from left of center. Similarly, conservatives have been feeding the press a misleading collection of quotations by and about Giuliani, on tax policy and school choice issues, assembled to make him look like a liberal.
But in a GOP presidential field in which cultural and religious conservatives may find something to object to in every candidate who could really get nominated (and, more important, elected), Giuliani may be the most conservative candidate on a wide range of issues. Far from being a liberal, he ran New York with a conservatives priorities: government exists above all to keep people safe in their homes and in the streets, he said, not to redistribute income, run a welfare state, or perform social engineering.
The private economy, not government, creates opportunity, he argued; government should just deliver basic services well and then get out of the private sectors way. He denied that cities and their citizens were victims of vast forces outside their control, and he urged New Yorkers to take personal responsibility for their lives.

I remember years ago, when the press complained that Rudy was essentially not sufficiently self-abasing regarding blacks and their complaints about his administration, he refused to back down, maintained his composure, and replied simply "I don't relate to people in that way," meaning racially. I have always admired him for that.
I don't even expect Jesus to protect me 24/7. If I start backing baby killers I won't expect it at all!
Our American freedom is a gift from God, doesn't He expect us to cherish and protect it?
If you do not believe in a republican form of government, with a strong constitution, what are you?
> MAYOR GIULIANI AND SPEAKER VALLONE ANNOUNCE CITY LAWSUIT AGAINST GUN INDUSTRY
Wow. He's quite a conservative. Getting in bed with lawyers AND defying constitutional freedoms? Lovely.
The Constitution is there to protect me from "do-gooders" such as Rudy. I have heard all about his "good intentions", and how he had "good reason" to do this, that or the other. It is still a fact that Rudy does not see The Constitution as a limit to his ambitions. This is a fatal flaw, to me.
The road to Hell, and tyranny, are well paved with those "good intentions".
Then don't vote for him and do what you can to keep him out of office.
Media may love him but he's not going to get the average Jane/John Doe conservative votes.
Darn shame that true conservatives are polluted/invaded by pretenders. FR comes to mind.
I will never willingly give up my freedom because urbanites
refuse to protect themselves, and demand that government do it for them. This is the case in a nutshell, and if you are offended, well, sorry about that. Just don't call yourself a Republican.
Except for the part where he's a gun-grabbing, baby-killing fruitloop who's OK with gay marriage, he's a real conservative; big time.
I've been asking myself that same question; which is why I'll be voting for my Cocker Spaniel if the GOP insists upon forcing such a decision.
Im not voting for some Rino that sues gun factories. Not even vs Hillary at least a hitlery win would really mobilize conservatism and kill off the rest of the rinos.
Not offended just enjoy reading silly little posts, thats why I am here, conservatives are fun to play with. They have this air of superiority (for example it is you that can decide what I call myself) it is laughable.
You would love it over at DU, with all the other liberal metrosexual elitists. Do I need to find a link for you, or do you want to search for yourself?
On second thought, you probably already know where it is!
You are beginning to smell like a troll.
These rooting for rootie threads are beginning to smell more and more like the pro-choice republican wing trying to alter the party to a liberal stance rather than just going to bed with democrats. Of course, we also have lying trolls who like to 'play with conservatives'.
Well, Hell, I'm a troll too! I won't tell you what my DU post count is, or what they call me there, I just hang around and dump a little turd, anytime I find a flat spot!
I've been too smart for them to catch me. Hell, I may end up as a moderater, over there, LOL, they ain't too bright! One thing you ain't is a REPUBLICAN!
There are some "issues" that are not matters of opinion, they are matters of fact! Done deals, engraved in stone, stop wasting your time, and mine! I've told you, about 1000 times, that you can have my guns when you find enough testosterone to take them. I may, of course, be blowing smoke, but maybe I ain't. How curious are you? Are you really a Male, or just a pretender?
I don't care how long you've been here, you stink like a troll, just run back over to DU, and see if you are smart enough to catch me!
Your momma may have told you how smart you are, she didn't lie, she just didn't have anything to compare to!
I don't object to the tenor or intensity of the interchanges; I object to the imputation of motives (you should have been me during the Iraq war debate in 2002-2003 for a "good" time), the name calling, and, really, the use of acronyms and barely misspelled words to feign "disguised" profanity. And that's from someone who privately uses profanity far, far too much.
It's sad. Really sad. We're becoming like DU, I suspect, except that I've never been to that site.
