The cave in which Jesus Christ was buried has been found in Jerusalem, claim the makers of a new documentary film.
If it proves true, the discovery, which will be revealed at a press conference in New York Monday, could shake up the Christian world as one of the most significant archeological finds in history.
The coffins which, according to the filmmakers held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene will be displayed for the first time on Monday in New York.
Jointly produced by Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and Oscar winning director James Cameron, the film tells the exciting and tortuous story of the archaeological discovery.
The story starts in 1980 in Jerusalems Talpiyot neighborhood, with the discovery of a 2,000 year old cave containing ten coffins. Six of the ten coffins were carved with inscriptions reading the names: Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus son - the filmmakers claim).
Decades of research
The findings in the cave, including the decipherment of the inscriptions, were first revealed about ten years ago by internationally renowned Israeli archeologist Professor Amos Kloner.
Since their discovery, the caskets were kept in the Israeli Antiquities Authority archive in Beit Shemesh, but now two have been sent to New York for their first public exhibition.
Although the cave was discovered nearly 30 years ago and the casket inscriptions decoded ten years ago, the filmmakers are the first to establish that the cave was in fact the burial site of Jesus and his family.
The film, which documents the stages of the discovery, is the result of three years labor and research. It will be broadcast on the international Discovery Channel, Britain's Channel 4, Canadas Vision and Israels Channel 8, which also took part in the film's production.
According to the filmmakers, the films claim is based on close work with world-famous scientists, archeologists, statisticians, DNA specialists and antiquities experts.

Here is a interesting line from a preacher I read and copied... and it does not pertain to the shroud, but, he was talking the Gospel, were Paul was talking about in Galatians.. not THE Gospel, but, another Gospel.
" The success of an illegitimate coiner depends largely upon how closely the counterfeit resembles the genuine article." .. Sir Aurthur Pink "
Could there have been another shroud ?
What has become of the original burial cloths of Jesus Christ ? does anyone know ?
Would his followers might have saved them knowing the significance of his claims and resurrection ? and the historical matters towards his resurrection ?
Are these legitimate questions to ask ?
I am on the side of believing that those cloths are authentic, but, I am open to proof and evidence that can either prove it is authentic,, or that it is not authentic,,,, however ? my faith does not depend on it otherwise.
However, I do not believe that they ( those people 500 or so years ago ) had the means, and technology to produce something like that.
In some TV show I have seen , that process by which that image was put on the Shroud of Turin would have be liken to the same effect of Hiroshima Japan blast....
I am not saying the image was produced by a devastating atomic blast ( or some kind of radiation ) but, the means ( some kind of light source, energy source ) when after it happened, there were human shadows on walls from the light and radiation from a atomic blast.
I am not trying to criticize what you have said,,, your argument does hold weight, but, just like the things in the Bible that we know about God, and man's understanding of God, and God's ways are not fully understood, nor is it complete ( I mean, our understanding of him ) .....
In other words, the jury is still out and need to think outside of the box.
Yes, I tend to lean on the side that it's authentic, and yes, I do hold out the fact that some could have faked the shroud of Turin, but, the jury is still out, and not all the facts have come to light...
As to our understanding of it, or the Bible, there is still more things that God himself will bring to light, and reveal to us on things about the Bible, and history, new discoveries ( not this one in the news ).
For example,,, the traditional view of were mount Sinai is was in the Sinai peninsula, but ? even Paul said that mount Sinai is in Arabia ( read the book of Galatians chapter 4 verse 24 ).
Could have historians and tradition been wrong all along about the Red Sea crossing, and were mount Sinai was ?
I was always thought that it was in the traditional view of were mount Sinai was.

>>What does this mean, are they trying to say our religion is a hoax??? This is the first I have heard of this one, scarey.<<
Matthew 24:23-25
At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the electif that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time.

Yes, there were. Before, during, and after.
It wasn't perfect by any means, but it was close. The author claimed that there were documented cases of use of a similar technique in medieval times.

Isn't this the storyline from that movie "The Body" from a few years ago?
To: Amanda75
Where did the DNA come from??????Probably from the ten bodies in the ten coffins.

No, Jesus did NOT have a son - Judah.

Next they'll tell you that through ancient microscopic DNA they know that Judah is the son of Jesus and Mary.
This is BUNK.
It probably took them all these years to come up with fraudulent "evidence".

I read some chronicles of the First Crusade when the Lance was basically found in the cellar of a castle that was being beseiged. It was quite hilarious. A guy has a "dream," goes and digs up a Lance where the dream told him to dig, and no one questions that it looks like all the other lances they have. "See, Jesus is with us, and uh, here's the Lance that pierced His side!" Yet somehow they won (was that in Tyre, I forget). It goes to show that all people need is something to believe in.

My understanding is these burial caves were used at the time much as mausoleums are today. It would typically be used by an extended family over a goodly period of time.
At the remove of 2000 years, determining *which* family would, of course, be utterly impossible, since documentation and other identifiable relics weren't part of burial customs.

I was aware of tomb's discovery... and also the early claims of connection to Jesus. My understanding is that it has not been given much credence or weight. What most people do not know is that Jeshua (Jesus), Miriam/Mariam (Mary) and Josef/Josa (Joseph) are quite common names in 1st Century Jerusalem.
It would not be surprising to find such names on ossuaries in juxtaposition in a tomb.
As the article states, it is the film makers who have "made" the leap of identification. This is not the way science is done. I doubt any of the "scientists" involved would publish their findings this way. Look at the history of the cave and the time that has passed. Would any archaeologist of any stature allow his findings to be upstaged by mere documentary film makers? No way.

This is a modern day version of the 'fraudulent religious artifacts' industry of the middle ages. And gullible folks will be taken in now just as they were then.

Depends on where you're looking at the light.
That's only the law in one single jurisdiction.
Other jurisdictions have different laws for the speed of light.

I'd rather hear them talk about the presence of coffins themselves. My understanding of Jewish burial customs of the time is that coffins weren't used; certainly not in a "cave" type of interment. The burial practice of the period in Jerusalem was to place a body on a niche or shelf in the tomb to allow it to naturally decompose. After about a year, the bones were collected and generally placed into a pit in the center of the tomb with all of the ancestors' bones (from which comes the saying "gathered unto his ancestors). The niche or shelf could then be reused. A wealthy person's family's might have a separate stone ossuary (bone box) made and to have the bones put in but that was comparatively rare.
For Joseph, a native of Galilee or perhaps Nazareth to be buried in a Jerusalem cemetery would also be unusual. Jewish people believed the body needed to be placed in the grave before sundown of the day of death and then the body could not be disturbed except for the ritual gathering of the bones a year or so later. Carrying Joseph's body or bones from his burial place would be highly unusual.
