Giuliani's problem with the religious [large graphics]

Posted on 02/18/2007 4:12:23 PM PST by Jim Robinson

I don't know about you, but I doubt the Christian conservatives throughout the red state farm belt and especially down in the South are going to cotton to a liberal New York Yankee coming down to try to clean up crime by taking their guns and bringing abortion and gay unions (gay marriage) into their families, schools and churches.

This is deadly serious business. If we allow the Islamofascists to take over the Middle East and Europe, not to mention infiltrate the Western hemisphere, our very survival is at stake and what your personal beliefs on 'social issues' are will be something you will be able to keep on discussing in jail or on your way to be beheaded...

A man who doesn't understand my right to own a firearm for self-defense won't understand how to deal with the Islamofascists. When all is said and done, his approach still depends on less freedom for everyone. He wants more "security," but security will never bring us safety. We need someone who will defeat the Islamofascists without restricting freedom for the rest of us.

We agree to disagree. Allow me a military metaphor:

A tactical retreat in the face of a surging enemy means living to fight another day (see Dunkirk, 1940).

A "do not give up an inch" strategy in the face of a surging enemy can mean catastrophe. (see Stalingrad, 1943).

I respect your spiritual convictions, Spiff.

But what is before you not sophistry.
It is an ethical dilemma.

This is not an easy situation.
Voting for Giulliani is morally unacceptable to you.
But not voting for Giuliani has dire consequences and very real moral implications as well.
All I ask is that you appreciate the complexity and weigh one against the other.

And if there exists an alternative who can fight the war and defeat hillary, he/she will become apparent as this process progresses. Thus far, I see no one. I think Mitt Romney is an impressive fellow, but, sadly, 40% of the electorate won't vote for him because he is Mormon.

If you want a repeat of 1992, 1996 and 2006, just go ahead and run a candidate and platform a huge portion of your base and grassroots cannot support. Abortion, gay unions and gun control should do it.

Well, you can tuck tail and run if you wish, but I will be taking the fight directly to the enemy. We are in the right place at the right time with the right power and weaponry and God willing, I intend to use it to defeat the enemy. And that's both here at home and wherever they rear their evil, ugly heads around the world!

We'll see.

Romney's main problem with me is his 'weathervane' act on key issues. That's a mark of political expedience which is not the mark of an effective leader.

You don't seem to understand, if you keep pushing Rudy for president and he gets the nomination, according to Rudy supporters, hildabeast will win. Why do you keep pushing Rudy if you know that's how it will play out?

Well, there's no accounting for ignorant bigots I guess.

I'm Mormon. And I won't vote for Romney either. I can't vote for him for the same reasons that I can't vote for Giuliani. I can't cast a vote for a pro-abortionist, pro-gay marriage candidate. I can't and I won't.

Precisely the same problem that Giuliani has been displaying lately.

I prefer someone who's running on a conservative platform, similar to that of the Republican party, than someone who's running on a mostly Liberal platform at odds with the Republican Party's platfrom.

It is no wonder the 'polls' (those fabrications by liberal sycophants) have those two strong against the Rodhamster's run for the White WHorehouse, eh?

There's a difference between assuring your supporters that certain issues will not be pushed, or will be left to the other branches of gov't that deal with them normally, and pretending to have changed your personal beliefs for votes.

One is called practical politics. The other is called lying.

Right. And Giuliani has been doing a lot of lying lately.

Those aren't the positions on which Romney's running.

Whom do you support?

As an aside, how do you think that front-loading the primaries will work? I see CA moving its primary early as a BIG plus for Rudy. You pick up CA and NY early and you're half-way there (or close to it...)

On the 'Rat side it means that Hitlary will be the de facto nominee in March and can start attacking the GOP. If we spend the Spring and into Summer savaging each other it will work right into her hands.

So I hope that - whoever the GOP selects - is decided quickly.

Ive been wondering the same thing. it defies logic.

The way these threads are playing out, youd think the primaries are over and we are already stuck with rudy and hillary.
so much could happen between now and then.

It may work well for Rudy, it won't be good for Mitt. Therefore, I don't much like the idea. : )
