I bought a new laptop computer (Compaq) yesterday. Finally got tired of my Dell crashing and living in Dell Hell.
Anyway, my new system has Vista as the operating system and it comes with a firewall.
My question is do I still need to go out and buy a better firewall (like Panda)?
Thanks in advance for the help!
Guess I'll have to get a different router. Mine isn't supported. Bummer.
I'm gonna get more info from the guys in my Cisco class tomorrow as to what router they say I should purchase and where the Linux IOS is located.
ok... just for general home use though it should be fine.. :\
You are correct. I guess studying Cisco for the past 7 months has me itching to be able to do more with my router.
what do you want to do with it? LOL
The guy sounds like a schlock. Tell him you want to return it and get your money back.
Well, it depends on the firewall... While my PIX 501 can't detect which applications are running on my servers, it does use stateful packet inspections, and I specify exactly what protocols move in and out of my network.

Sorry, I can't help you use that feature, because I've never tried it, but someone here should be able to help you.

Thank you both!
Just a note to thank you for your input on my computer problem last night. I went over our conversation and decided to further explore your suggestion on the MSCONFIG process.
Using the Microsoft Startup and Shutdown Troubleshooter while in the SELECTIVE STARTUP, thru trial and error, checking and unchecking boxes in the STARTUP ITEMS then starting and restarting, I was finally able to pinpoint a bad file which was named IPMON32.
Once identified, I continued to have problems with it because every time I unchecked the box then went back and checked the NORMAL BOOT box, it would be checked off again. The only way it would remain unchecked is if I stayed in SELECTIVE STARTUP mode.
I then did a search on the internet for IPMON32 and found out it was contained in a program called Visual IP InSight I then checked out my Add/Remove programs listing and sure enough, there it was.
Evidently it is a non-essential program that was put on my computer by my internet provider SBCYahoo and is used to monitor my DSL internet connection.
The article also went on to say that it can be removed without any negative effects on my computer.
So, having discovered that, I then used my Add/Remove programs and got rid of it. I then rebooted my computer, went back to the MSCONFIG and SELECTIVE STARTUP, then went to the STARTUP ITEMS, and lo and behold, IPMON32 was gone. I then checked off the NORMAL STARTUP box, rebooted the computer and everything worked out fine. (At least for now ..LOL!)
I know its not a big deal at this point but Im still ticked off at the lack of help from the guy at the computer store.
If he wanted to garner a good supplier/customer relationship he probably should have considered giving me a call back by now to see if I was able to fix my problem.
Since he didnt, my last impressions of him were I dont have the time to help you pal, but thanks for shopping with us
BTW, Cool that you got it working... ;)
Sometimes a little playing can teach you more than you think... ;)
Remember it's a "new computer", IF IT F***s up take it back... LOL
Personally, to me... I would return it(if you can since the guy or place sounds worthless)
Just a small business owner locally. Its called Ability PC. A friend of mine works for a financial planning firm and they do all their computer sales and svc. thru this place and he recommended them.
It's just an off the wall brand of computer I bought to replace my Dell Dimension 8100 which was about 9 years old.
But you're right tho, you gotta go in hands on if you want to learning anything. Fortunately, I didn't screw anything up like I normally do. (At least I don't think I did but time will tell)
And for the record, I don't think the problem was with that ROXIO software but rather that DSL program that got installed after I brought the computer home and got set up with my ISP. The first reboot I did was after installing the ROXIO and thats when it would not reboot.
Anyway, from all the negative stuff I read about the ROXIO, I'm certainly not going to try and reinstall it and at this point I don't need it anyway since I installed a program called 1 CLICK DVD COPY 5 to run with my Mad Dog DVD burner......
That may well be true for their computers for home/small business use. I will be buying one this summer myself, but already have a brand new version of XP with SP-2 in the unopened box ready to install so I don't have to deal with the Vista crap.
I bought a copy of XP Home with SP-2 for $99 from NewEgg. The sale is good until March 15, which is when I suspect they will cut the MS XP cord.
Yea, Roxio Stinks... try nero.com.... ;)
My Brother did the same thing... (on second thought, he should have purchased MCE or pro to get the FREE Vista upgrade, buying "home" you have to pay like $70 for the "Vista home premium upgrade" which still isn't a bad deal... since it can be a clean install... )
Does Zone alarm work with Windows Vista?
Yes, including the free version.
Not yet.
I'm not going to ever use Windows Vista. Even if it comes pre-installed on a new machine, I do not like what I am reading, especially with DRM.
