(Vanity) Do your school close on account of cold?

Posted on 02/05/2007 5:14:52 AM PST by yankeedame

I'm here in the Dayton, OH area. We are going through a blast of "dangerous" cold. Today 8 degree expected high, with wind chill of -10 to -15. Otherwise sunny.

I've got the radio on and I'm stunned the number of school closings! (Not to mention the slightly smaller number of "2 hour delays".)

Do you folks have this no-school-today-because-its-too-cold?

Yep. This morning IPS' bus yard workers were out starting the busses when the administration called off school at the last minute - too many bus drivers called in "sick" (see: Drunk or hungover) in order to run all the bus routes.

Most schools were calling 2 hour delays. Though I recall in the past when it was subzero the schools would do a 2 hour delay so the kids wouldn't have to stand outside for a long period of time waiting on the bus.

And another thing....

What's with this "real-feel" temperature? Wouldn't that differ from person to person depending what one thinks is the cause of global warming?

Yes, I'd heard of talk of school closings in Indy on account of the Super Bowl. Down here in Coluimbus, we're on a two hour delay.

Good Morning!

We are at - 20, with windchills down to - 40. (Wisconsin)

Schools all over the State are closed today because of the bone chilling cold. I think its a snowball effect. They started posting school closures last night during the Super Bowl.

I teach there. I heard the reason through word of mouth. I was shocked when it said IPS was closed. IPS hardly ever closes or delays. Poor kids gotta have their free breakfast and lunch, doncha know. Even when we got 9 inches of snow last year, there was no delay because of THAT reason. Half the kids didn't show up, so I'm sure the district lost a lot of money through lack of student attendance.

"This morning IPS' bus yard workers were out starting the busses when the administration called off school at the last minute - too many bus drivers called in "sick""

So that's true?!! Wow, I heard that this morning from a coworker and thought it was an exaggeration.

Hi, I'm in the Dayton area, also. Just moved (back) here from Texas where I had the privilege of staying home from the University of Texas several times due to the temperature being ~30 F (no precipitation). They would drop dead on the street if it was like this down there.

Most of the area schools here (east central Indiana) are on a two hour delay due to the wind chill and sub zero temps. My daughter's school however doesns't have a delay as there are no buses...we parents are responsible for getting the kids to school and we are always told to use our best judgement as to whether to take the kids to school in inclement weather. Rule of thumb is if the local university is closed then so is our school...but that rarely ever happens much to the student's chagrin!!!!

Standing and waiting for a school bus in single digit weather and below could be hazardous. My daughter had to actually buy a new coat because her school locker is too small for her heavy winter coat.

Ours did this morning, first time in my memory. We are in mid Wisconsin, and the temp was -18 this morning, with wind chills of -35 to -40, so I think it is ok. Most of the kids in the district live out of town, and stand at bus stops, so I think they made the right call on this one.

In fact, I work out of my home, so I am only working 4 hours today, and enjoying my own "frigid cold" day.

BTW.... Screw Al Gore, I love global warming!!!!!

I'm in Cleveland. The radio station stopped reading the school closings because there were too many. Minus 2 degrees right now.
