Virginia Delegate Offends Blacks, Jews (Re Slavery: Says Blacks Should 'Get Over It')
Richmond Times-Dispatch ^ | 01/17/2007 | PAMELA STALLSMITH and OLYMPIA MEOLA

After two black legislators denounced his comments yesterday on a proposed state apology for slavery, a Hanover County delegate told a Jewish lawmaker who also was upset that his skin was too thin.

Del. David L. Englin, D-Alexandria, who is Jewish, took Del. Frank D. Hargrove Sr., R-Hanover, to task for "inflammatory" comments Hargrove made to the Charlottesville Daily Progress.

Hargrove was quoted as saying that asking the state to apologize for slavery would be akin to asking Jews to apologize for killing Christ.

I think Massachusetts should apologize for John Kerry.

I don't get how calling someone "thin skinned" is racial or anti-Semetic.

You are obviously not thin-skinned, and thus have no concept of how it offends those who are to have it pointed out /s

No one here is arguing that "thin-skinned" is racial. It's the slavery and blood libel references that have that connotation.

My roots are in Amherst and Rockbridge Counties, VA. In the early 20th century - Dr. Plecker, State Registrar of Vital Statistics, in his attempt to 'cleanse' the populace of 'mongrels', had all of my black Irish and Monacan indian relatives re-categorized as Mulatto, inhibiting their voting and property rights.

Since nobody has it on their damn agenda to apologize to Mulatto-Americans, my Welsh-Dutch-American self recently deposited (what I consider fair market) reparations to my American-Mulatto self, from/to the same bank account(!) and now I am content and completely at peace with every ounce of blood that courses through my Mongrel-no-more veins. I offer my example as a healing effort to others who may be similarly conflicted.

>In a floor speech, Jones -- a Baptist pastor -- said he would apologize where others wouldn't.

"I want to apologize. I want to apologize to the mothers and fathers of my ancestors who were transported to this nation against their will in order that this nation might be built upon their backs.

"I want to apologize to the mothers and fathers of the civil-rights generation who were hosed and bitten by dogs, and their children were killed in churches as they burned," he said.<

When were people hosed and bitten by dogs in Virginia, much less killed in burning churches?? Schools were segregated, and politicians whined over integration, but dog GONE, when did Virginia become Mississippi?

I want the British to apologize for burning our capitol in the War of 1812. That destroyed many important records and has affected my ability to conduct historical research.

He referenced the blood libel to point out the absurdity of it.

Anyone offended by that part of his remarks is either dumb or just reading headlines.

This whole argument among the legislators is a tempest in a teapot.

Don't these guys have less petty things to do?

His quotes originated from a Charlottesville newpaper interview. It's not as if he stood up in the Va Assembly, pounded his fist on the podium and snarled these opinions with caustic intent.

Don't know if he snarled, but the thin skinned comment was made on the Assembly floor, directed to a Jewish delegate who had just offered his opinion on the article. I'm not sure it makes any difference, they're stupid comments.

Delagate David L. Englin, a Democrat, seated next to Hargrove, spoke passionately about his grandparents leaving Poland "where they were driven from their homes by people who believed that as Jews, we killed Christ."

As he held up a wallet-sized photo of his 7-year-old son, Caleb, Englin struggled to keep his composure as he pondered the possibility that the child might have to cope with anti-Semitic comments.

When Englin sat, Hargrove reached over and softly patted Englin on the arm. Then, Hargrove rose to speak and, looking down at his seatmate, said, "I didn't even know you were Jewish, I had no idea of what your religion, (and) I don't care what your religion is. I don't care."

"I think your skin was a little too thin," he said as Republicans and Democrats gasped and groaned in disbelief.

We actually can. Slavery is a BIG market. Only, today, it is called Human Trafficking.

I agree that one never gets over a condition as dreadful as slavery. However, slavery ended over 150 years ago, and the last slave died long ago. Unless one is predisposed to such mental contortions, one cannot suffer vicariously for pain inflicted upon ancestors long dead.

There's a FReeper here whose ancestor was impressed by the British into servitude aboard one of Her Majesty's ships.

I always love his comments towards the reparations/slavery crowd.

Well, here is where he caused the problem. If Hargrove had had the intelligence to explain to the delegates with minimal reading comprehension skills that he was using the blood libel as an example of something that is inane, then maybe he wouldn't have dug a larger hole.

They should get over it. There's not a single Black person alive today that has been a slave.
