What an insane thing to say! Prior to that incident, could you imagine any school would be more safe than an Amish school? That tragedy was about an invasion from an armed intruder. Statistically speaking, a home is probably more subject to an armed attack than any school. What silly logic! I hope their kids are getting logic lessons from a book and not from their home schooling parent!

I have to wonder about some of these people. The friends mom says they had told him,,,,you look like Shawn Hornbeck...are they clueless? I understand that this was in 2003 when he really did look like the photo. I just believe I would have asked Shawn more questions. Buy maybe that is just me. Then the neighbors....I am sorry, but are they idiots? If I had heard whimpering, begging, screaming, I would have either knocked on the door myself or called the police. I would have certainly had my glass up to the wall, my ear to the heat register, to see what I could hear. What is with people. Why doesn't BOR mention these lame brained people who were a part of Shawns life. I'm sorry but this makes me angry.

I know hind sight is better than foresight. Hopefully this has made people more aware. Talk about people repeatedly dropping the ball.

I dunno. I consider myself to be a fairly insightful person. I would like to think I would have pursued suspicions about Shawn, but I just don't know if I can say that with certainty. It is very easy to look back in hindsight and say they should have done this or that. But, if the kid didn't acknowledge he was Hornbeck when asked about it (albeit jokingly) and, as far as the parents could tell, he was free to go around and visit friends, I can understand how they might not have acted. I think this has been a good lesson for us all. If something doesn't seem right -- even if you get the right answers from the child in question -- it can't hurt to at least call a tip line and have it checked out. My 2-year-old has a very high-pitched scream -- you can't miss it. One day, as we were leaving the grocery store, I pulled him out of the shopping cart -- one of those ones with a kid's riding truck attached to the front -- and put him in his car seat. He let out a scream like you wouldn't believe. It was so loud you could hear him even with the car windows rolled up. A LOT of people stared at me, but no one did anything. I can't say that I blame them. They probably know what it is like to have a toddler, and didn't want to jump to conclusions. Still, I wouldn't have been offended if someone had stepped in to see if everything was alright.

I can honestly say I did not think Ben Ownby would be found alive and it was only 4 days. After a couple of years, I certainly wouldn't think I was actually looking at Shawn Hornbeck, even if he looked similar. Shawn said they had a story and it never waivered. When I worked at a daycare, I did call CPS when a boy came in with weird bruises. I wasn't his teacher at the time, but I felt obligated to help this child. No one else in his life helped him, who had more direct contact with him!! If Shawn seemed OK (no bruises, not saying anything weird or cryptic), I am not sure I would have really thought anything of it.

Although, the neighbors, if they heard strange things and never reported it, that is a whole different story.

She certainly appears to lean left -- but doesn't really push it.

**
Isn't her list of guests usually Rat politicians/candidates and Hollywood celebrities flaunting their anti-family lifestyles? I seem to recall that she has criticized the President also. (Full disclosure: I am not a viewer, and I have not really watched more than 5-10 minutes of any of her shows.)

At any rate, she could do good for all of the country if she would get behind marriage and would push for women to be married (and stay married) before they have children. She apparently has a lot of influence over many women, who evidently need help with thinking for themselves.

I just hope this perv gets DEATH! I hope he does not get special treatment and kept away from the other criminals. Those bad boys in prison will take care of him!!!

***
Well, you know he won't get death for what he did to Shawn, although I think it is certainly warranted. Unfortunately, he won't even get death if it is proved that he killed that other missing boy the news reports have been linking him to.

That poor kid, Shawn, even with all of the support he will get, will probably never be healed. When I first saw him after his rescue I cried when I saw the overwhelming sadness in his eyes. His childhood and his sexual development were highjacked by that pervert at such a pivotal time in a child's social development.

Let's be positive. I think Shawn is going to turn out okay.
On his website, it said that he wants to be an advocate for missing children. His life is going to go an entire different direction that what it would have been without this missing 4.5 years, but I think he is going to have happiness and will make a contribution to society. The Akers are awesome people. I am really impressed with them.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Ivory tower PhD professor types are some of the most screwed up people in the world. They're usually possessed of giant egos (about how smart they are), but many of them are just dysfunctional in regular society. The term "professional students" comes to mind here. They thrive in that kind of "protected environment" but are not able to function normally when it comes to real, adult-level responsibility in many respects.

My brother-in-law is a PhD of philosophy. And he's a raging alcoholic. My sister and I did an intervention with my oldest sister married to this guy over the holidays. He was rationalizing and making excuses about his behavior like crazy. Just because somebody has a bunch of letters behind his/her name does not make them a well-rounded, caring, loving parent.

They must be idiots. If I had wimpering, crying, coming from an apt where there is a grown man with a child I would have called CPS/COPS and reported it. If I had seen a child that looks like a missing child I would report it even if I was wrong.

Ok, it is easy to say what we would do in a situation I know, but I'm sure I WOuld never have made the mistake of Shawn's friend's mother who thought he looked like Shawn but didn't do anything about it.

Some people are just dumb!

I still can't get it out of my mind about the fact that apparently no family members ever dropped by Michael Devlin's apt. in all the time that he's lived there. Michael apparently went by himself to the family Christmas get-together (no doubt leaving Shawn back at the home), and so this was another method by which Michael/kidnapper was able to successfully compartmentalize his "private" life (with the kidnapped kids) away from his "public" persona (with his family and employers, etc.).

I stop into my sisters' homes at least a couple times a year for whatever reasons. They live over an hour or two away, but I still stop by. These Devlin people live relatively close by but they've never just casually dropped by to see their brother (albeit adopted). Are the Devlin parents dead? Where have they been in all this? Hmmmmmmmm.....

My youngest child is only a month younger than Shawn Hornbeck and she's probably the most vulnerable of our 3 kids because she's just not street-smart at all (we're working on that part...). I can only imagine the terrible heart-ache these parents have gone through. It's almost worse than having the child be suddenly killed in a car crash. At least then you can go through the grieving process and get through it knowing what happened. The pain and ache never goes away as long as that child is still missing.

ya know, i understand this a bit better. My brother is a single 27 year old guy who lives around here. We have never been to his place and I have no idea where he lives. When I see him it is out at my parents and occasionaly around here, but for a reason or two. I wouldn't conider us close, but he is my brother and I do keep in contact with him.

I do believe that Oprah has the right idea about all this and that her heart is in the right place most of the time. Sometimes she gets sucked into the lib vortex from time to time, no question. I had indeed been made aware that Oprah was sexually abused as a child by her nineteen year old cousin, so there's no doubt in my mind that she knows, from first-hand experience, the terror these children are made to feel by their abusers (and/or kidnappers, in the Ownby/Hornbeck case(s).

This information about Oprah came out about the same time as the movie "The Color Purple".
