Bush adding 21,500 troops to Iraq force - LIVE thread- speech 9pm EST

Unswayed by anti-war passions, President Bush will send 21,500 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and build the American presence there toward its highest level to quell worsening bloodshed. The move puts Bush on a collision course with the new Democratic Congress and runs counter to advice from some senior generals.

Set to announce his decisions in a prime-time speech Wednesday night, Bush was to acknowledge making major mistakes in Iraq, primarily failing to deploy enough U.S. soldiers and demand more Iraqi troops and cooperation to confront the country's near-anarchy.

In advance of Bush's address, White House counselor Dan Bartlett said U.S. military operations have been "handcuffed by political interference by Iraqi leadership" — but now will proceed under rules allowing troops to confront Shiite militias as well as Sunni insurgents.

(snip)

The new Democratic leaders of Congress met with Bush and complained afterward that their opposition to a buildup had been ignored. "This is the third time we are going down this path. Two times this has not worked," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Why are they doing this now? That question remains."

Senate and House Democrats are arranging votes urging the president not to send more troops. While lacking the force of law, the measures would compel Republicans to go on record as either bucking the president or supporting an escalation.

I'm on the same exact path you're on... so we're not hot yet. I assume they have to block off Syria and show Iran we're not playing... We're ramping up... if Gates announces this growing of the military tomorrow, then we know something big's going down.

I could never get the adequate words together to express just how much faith and respect I have for this good leader, this good man. I thank our Father, so deeply, for leadership of President Bush.

Amen, Republic! ME too!

Iran and Syria stop supporting the insurgency or we will strike back. Everyone is to busy talking about the the partisan politics and not looking at the BIG picture.....

Great point. Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait are Sunni. Iraq and Iran are predominantly Shia. Trust me on this one.(OK, I'm not coming down off the mountain with this, you all now know) If you think partisan politics is bad in the USA, you are getting a good look at partisan politics in the Middle East. Take Liberals versus Conservatives and multiply it by 1,200 and that's how much the Sunnis hate the Shia. Or in a Math formula:

(Liberals) X (Conservatives)= 1,200 (Sunni) X (Shia)

The difference here in America is we all firmly believe (even the looney left, Kennedy, Pelosi and the dopes on Huffington and DU) that we are all part of something much bigger than ourselves. The idea of a great melting pot, the greatest country in the history of the planet Earth.

The Iraqis don't have a common national unity or philosophical identity.

they wouldn't be seeing the immediate withdrawal like they were expecting and then they're stuck being labeled anti-military based on their vote.

You are so right! The money will be there one way or the other. DoD will take care of its own when the Congress won't! Thank you Senators Inhofe and McCain for getting extra money in the current budget.

Maybe he has had an epiphany. I suggest prayer might be in order for the leap of faith folks.

The sad thing, is that Bush should have put the fear of "God" into the man, and his team, at least nine months ago. I would have siced Jwalsh07 on him, as my personal "ambassador." Bush just doesn't move fast enough. He was slow on Katrina, and he was slow here. Why did Bush wait until the friggin Dems took control of Congress!

We are far from the total numbers of Americans killed in Vietnam, Korea, or WWII.

More Americans died on D-Day than in the last 3 years and 10 months of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

At the rate we are going in Iraq, it would take another 75 years to get to the number of combat deaths in Vietnam.

My honest opinion? He has too much "faith". Not in the Good Lord mind you but in the folks that work for him. But you're right, slow is a good term. A good man nonetheless.
