Unswayed by anti-war passions, President Bush will send 21,500 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and build the American presence there toward its highest level to quell worsening bloodshed. The move puts Bush on a collision course with the new Democratic Congress and runs counter to advice from some senior generals.
Set to announce his decisions in a prime-time speech Wednesday night, Bush was to acknowledge making major mistakes in Iraq, primarily failing to deploy enough U.S. soldiers and demand more Iraqi troops and cooperation to confront the country's near-anarchy.
In advance of Bush's address, White House counselor Dan Bartlett said U.S. military operations have been "handcuffed by political interference by Iraqi leadership" but now will proceed under rules allowing troops to confront Shiite militias as well as Sunni insurgents.
(snip)
The new Democratic leaders of Congress met with Bush and complained afterward that their opposition to a buildup had been ignored. "This is the third time we are going down this path. Two times this has not worked," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Why are they doing this now? That question remains."
Senate and House Democrats are arranging votes urging the president not to send more troops. While lacking the force of law, the measures would compel Republicans to go on record as either bucking the president or supporting an escalation.

YES!
"Major Garret is reporting that by next week Dem Senators are going to vote on opposing this plan."
Why wait?
The orders are already out and in motion....and the rats no it....gives them the opportunity to bitch and moan some more..
for a girls softball team.
Amen!
They HAVE been loosened.
I totally agree, Miss Marple. If we are in a war -- and we are -- then war time measures are necessary. Our fine folks in the military have and are, suffering, but rank and file citizens here haven't felt the pinch of war time sacrifice in a materialistic sense. Yes, the President should address the nation as often as possible.
The Dems have a plan .. it's called Retreat
"All my relatives in the mililtary support the President."
And so do I.
I don't know you but thanks for sharing about your mom with us. 102, wow! What a lady.
Thanks for the quick address. I have already sent my letter.
Don't cut Brownback any slack.
&&&&
I'm not! Brownback who? National security is Issue One with me!
Most important part of this night's speech yet NOT ONE PERSON HAS MENTIONED IT!!!
Succeeding in Iraq also requires defending its territorial integrity and stabilizing the region in the face of the extremist challenge. This begins with addressing Iran and Syria. These two regimes are allowing terrorists and insurgents to use their territory to move in and out of Iraq. Iran is providing material support for attacks on American troops. We will disrupt the attacks on our forces. We will interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria. And we will seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq.
"We are also taking other steps to bolster the security of Iraq and protect American interests in the Middle East. I recently ordered the deployment of an additional carrier strike group to the region. We will expand intelligence sharing and deploy Patriot air defense systems to reassure our friends and allies. We will work with the governments of Turkey and Iraq to help them resolve problems along their border. And we will work with others to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons and dominating the region."
Take in account what the president said above and the ending of the speech and you get the picture. Iran and Syria stop supporting the insurgency or we will strike back. Everyone is to busy talking about the the partisan politics and not looking at the BIG picture.....
Yep .. and he sounded like a Democrat with the reasons why he was against it
You just said you are with the ten traitors....Did you forget already?
Amen and AMEN.
Everyone thinks that congress just cut off funds for Vietnam and the war suddenly ended but the reality is that they were cutting off funds for a while. President Ford had made a conscience decision not to rearrange funding to keep Vietnam going. The Pentagon has billions to shuffle around but what ends up happening is they end up robbing Peter to pay Paul.
They've been loosened. The dogs are slipping silently into the night.
I've noticed that, too.
Francis Pauc is a Catholic and is an example, unfortunately, of a lying pacifist.
He pretended in a recent letter to the editor, to have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we are losing and should leave Iraq, He said that the war is immoral.
A search on the internet showed he has been a pacifist for some time and was influenced in that direction by people he met while serving in Germany 20 years ago.
A PDF file of Francis Pauc's essay, "How a Military Man Became a Pacifist," can be downloaded from a link at the bottom of the web page Catholics for Peace and Justice.
YEAH~~~~~~~~~~~~LOL!
