Jeb Bush in 2008?

Two and a half years ago I predicted George W Bush's victory in the 2004 elections as well as the subsequent ruin of his political fortune. "Many will be the night during his second term," I wrote in August 2004, "that Bush will wish he were still in Texas, and still drunk." [1]
Here is a follow-on forecast: brother Jeb, about to step down as governor of the state of Florida, will be elected president of the United States in 2008, thanks in large measure to the rebound ofthe current president's standing. In fact, I have no idea whether this will occur. But I raise the prospect to show why it could occur.

I'd vote for him if he was the candidate, but I doubt likely he is electible.

Of course, according to certain FReepers, the reason he shouldn't run is because his wife is *gasp* Mexican. And that's the EXACT reason why Bush has been so lax on the border issue with Mexico. How can he be seen to go against his own family?

Neither the Kennedys nor the Bushs got rich from public service.
Get real....

He's done the right things in most cases but failed to communicate to the American people WHY he's doing what he's doing. That, in my mind, has been his single greatest and ongoing mistake. Why he does not work harder to communicate more frequently with the country is a mystery I simply do not understand. For example, how many speeches has he delivered to the nation from the Oval Office? I'll bet far fewer than most modern presidents.

>>>>>Jeb Bush is more pro-illegal alien than his brother Jorge Bush. The operative word I used was, "consider". Both Bush brothers along with Rudy Giuliani and John McCain favor amnesty. Next year the Democrats will pass immigration reform legislation that will look an awful lot like the McCain-Kennedy Senate bill, S.2611, and very little like HR4437. If that happens, immigration reform is off the table as a hot button issue for another generation.
My major objective is to make sure Rudy Giuliani doesn't become the GOP nominee for 2008. Period. We can do better then choosing a full fledged liberal to be the party standard-bearer.

Jeb Bush will not be elected president in 2008. I don't believe he or Hillary will ever be elected president. After being presided over by Bushes and Clintons for nearly 20 consecutive years, the country wants new faces, hence the otherwise inexplicable popularity of Obama.

Even if what you say is true (which I deny), being noncompetitive is far better than being nonexistent. We can recover from any period of demonstrated lack of competitiveness. But once America is lost, that's that. It will never be recreated, at least not in our lifetimes.

You deny we can't compete with a technology savvy China, Malaysia, anywhere where the tech is coming online to rival or exceed ours and the work force is willing to come to work to make 1/20 of what the American worker expects? What part of this aint gonna work do you not understand?

People (even republicans) are tired of the Bushes. I don't think he has a chance.

"What about Tony Snow for president?"
Tony would be fine but I would rather have Brit Hume.

No. Not just Bush fatigue, but many more reasons.
How about a conservative for a change?

Huckabee was a good governor, and might make a good president. Jeb's record as governor is VERY good, but he could not win the presidency in 2008 no matter how good a job he has done and no matter how much better he might articulate a conservative message than W has done. The squishy middle "independent" vote will simply not go for him. He could possibly carry most of the south and some of the mid-west, but he would not be able to carry enough of the country to win the presidency. In 2012 or 2016 -- MAYBE. But there is no way he wins in 2008.

What do you mean "ain't gonna work."? What are the problems associated with "not working."? Higher prices? Lower standard of living? Not good, but not worth abandoning our country over. We can and will meet that challenge.
We have a lot of unused talent and resources here that we do not turn to because we have "cheap" labor from Mexico and "cheap" goods from China. Without those things, we would figure out how to do more with what we have, and still preserve this dream we call "America."
Regardless of what we do, I fear that we are in for some hard times. A period of re-buiding and re-organization. The question is not if but how this will be done. And I say do it in a way that preserves our country, not destroys it.

How dare you come in here on this Bush bashing thread and post a comment that shows intelligence and thoughtfulness. Can't you think of some cutesy way to denigrate the Bush surname? You must follow your betters and quit with this independent thought and rationale! You might actually influence someone to say something accurate and complimentary about a Bush. Oh dear!

Just think how different this debate would be today if JFK Jr. were alive.

The Clintons are either the luckiest, the best, or the most ruthless politicians ever to walk the face of the earth.
I personally think that they are all of the above.
