Poets and philosophers, merchants and mathematicians, artisans and astronomers re-enacted the Golden Age of Islam at the Al-Arqam Islamic School in south Sacramento on Friday.
The artistry, story-telling and role-playing was a creation of 233 students from kindergarten through ninth grade who brought to life the sights, tastes and smells of an Islamic empire that spanned three continents from the eighth to the 13th centuries.
From incense to Turkish coffee, dates to oranges, minarets to miniature mosques and castles -- you could find it all at The Islamic Civilization Exhibit and Festival in the school's multipurpose room.
Pageantry was accompanied by plenty of food for thought.
In the midst of this "village" teeming with children dressed in Saudi, Afghan, Palestinian, Pakistani, Egyptian and Moroccan garments, a large gold and blue tent set the stage for a debate among nine famous Muslim scholars.
Ibn Battuta (12-year-old Abdurrahman Husnein)was considered the greatest tourist of the 14th century. He followed the Prophet Muhammad's advice to "seek knowledge even if it takes you to China."
Ibn Sina (10-year old Belal Ahmed) insisted that his Canon of Medicine was a more important contribution because "My work saves lives!" Sina lived from 980 to 1037.
The father of algebra, Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khawarizmi (11-year-old Javed Maroon) responded, "I created the decimal system and the use of zero ... I educate the lives you save." The mathematician lived from 770 to 840.
Imam Malik (13-year-old Ossama Kamel), who compiled thousands of sayings from the Prophet Muhammad, warned the others against arrogance. "No one who has an atom's weight of pride in his heart will enter the garden," he quoted the prophet as saying.

So the UN and the Arab League have nice things to say about progress in the Arab world. And yet, somehow, I'm still skeptical.
Nice things? I would not put it that way
Main points - the low development is primarily caused by (1) lack of freedom, (2) lack of knowledge, and (3) discrimination against women.
Now you may call that "nice things to say" but I wouldn't.
I'd call it more of a smack upside the head....but that's just me.
BO & burning flesh
The fate of Muslims is to forever be mired in Islam. On the global citizenship scale they are a zero. They are truely civiliazations boat anchor.
Right, we all know the White House vets any reports, articles for words or phrases that may be critical of the Bush administration.....
Hmmmm....did anyone in the world at the time of mohammed's dreadful life even know that the "atom" existed much less be able to define it? Seems a bit bogus to me, especially since he was an illiterate camel herding, child molesting murderous dictator....and a physicist?
It was for the purpose of pointing out that Whites, Christians, and Americans - no matter what good they do - are always inherently evil & imperialistic. It's holding them to a higher standard than anyone else in the world is held to.
It's the same philosophy that says we should pay reparations to black people for our "ancestors" role in slavery. Don't you know, we are all still guilty of any past sins of our forefathers?
I myself, was absolutely enchanted to read about the rich culture that is/was Islam....../sarc
How many children dressed as suicide bombers and had explosives strapped to them?
The word 'atom' is of Greek origin, from what I think was 'atomos', IIRC. The Sanskrit word was 'anum'. Both mean 'smallest unit'.
The scientific meaning to the word was applied to it in the modern times.
did the kids reenact the scene where mohammed had his 'visions' during epileptic seizures? And did they play out how mohammad spoke vile disgusting racist language too? Just curious. http://sacredscoop.com
Great, California - the land of fruits and nuts, has a madrossa near the state capitol.
Did you read the report? I did, at least as much of the BS as I could stomach. From your link:
"The Report contends that the strongest inhibition of development for many Arab citizens, women and men, have been foreign occupations and the 'war on terror.'"
So in other words, the US having the audacity to fight the war on terror and the shear nerve of the Jews in "occupying" Palestine, is the cause of all the Arabs' problems. If we would just leave them alone and not fight the war on terror, if the Jews would just march into the sea and give their sliver of land to the Palestinians, then everything in the Arab world would be just peachy. That's not a slap upside their own heads, it's a slap at their perennial favorite scapegoats, us and the evil Jooooos.
Until Arabs come up with solutions to the lack of freedom, lack of knowledge and discrimination against women that don't involve blaming all their troubles on the US and Israel, color me unimpressed. Identifying problems is the easy part; being willing to make the changes within Arab society to remedy the wrongs is a whole lot harder. Those changes will not come about while the Arab world is in the grip of a regressive, repressive philosophy like Islam, and while Arabs persist in blaming their backwardness on everyone but the real culprits, themselves.
BARF
Islam hasn't brought any gift to the world after they passed Indian numerals off as the Arabic numeral system. All the rest of the "Islamic achievements" are really discoveries or arts based on the underlying Christian (in the case of Syria, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq), Zoroastrian (Iran, Iraq, Central Asia) and Hindu (Western India a.k.a. Pakistan) or Buddhist (Central Asia) civilisations
Just the kind of tripe I expect from the bee.
Gag!
Damn tootin' The sausages have never recovered.
Libraries do not do well when set afire, e.g. the Library at Alexandria where many original and copied texts were lost when destroyed by Arab invaders.
Have any world empires ever returned once over with?
