Having "no public rescue" periods would probably also diminish the number of failed expeditions too, because the perception that you will be rescued probably injects a certain amount of moral hazard insurance into the decision to attempt the activity..

Are you serious? I mean, if someone is up there with a broken leg and can't get down the mountain...you would just leave him up there? Shall ambulances and police cars not respond to cars who are going to fast and go off the road into a ravine? Should firemen not put out fires when someone leaves a pot on a stove or falls asleep while smoking???

I am all for personal responsibility, but rescue workers wouldn't have jobs if they only helped people who didn't do something stupid.

I'll agree that it stinks and is a ridiculous amount of money, but really...I am embarassed by some of he comments I am reading here on FR.

Range on the beepers is not much but used in combination with personal EPIRBs seems like a great combo. Does anybody know if these guys or climbers these days use this technology? I never go offshore over the horizon without my trusty EPIRB.

I'm beyond embarrassed. I'm totally disgusted. Thank God for the people in SAR. They actually care, and have compassion for their fellow man. Something that seems to be totally lacking around here. I can't believe some of the posts I have read on this thread. Are that many people really devoid of love and compassion? Scary.

Life is dangerous. It is most vivid at the edge. This guy knew very well that this climb might kill him. He was a fighter. He might have died...but he was a winner because he died trying.

You have a point, he may well have died thinking, "Yeee-haw!!! Hypothermia! What a way to go! I win I win I win!!!"
Not everyone is going to get on his knees and pray for forgiveness for his selfish hedonism and the heartbreak his untimely death will cause his family.
If you have to live dangerously, try doing something that saves people rather than something that obliges them to risk their lives to save you.

There is a huge difference between not caring and not rescuing, and people pointing out that taking risks is a good thing as long as you take personal responsibility.

And is seems like a legitimate question to ask who pays for risky behavior that goes bad. I'm not hearing people calling off the rescue, but wondering about the decision making all around.

Well I don't see that. I see "Darwinism award" nominations and a reasonable concern over who pays and a ting of annoyance over the media hype - I mean how many people died of breast cancer while this media event went on.
