Theresa Marie Schindler was born to Robert and Mary Schindler on December 3, 1963. She was the first of three children the Schindlers would have.
Terri was a shy, but comical, child who had an affinity for music, animals and the arts. She kept a small circle of friends and was dear to schoolmates, neighboring families and her own extended family.
Following high school, Terri came into her own. She developed a knack for sketching and doodling. She enjoyed outings with her friends. She was an adoptive mother to the familys dog, Bucky.
Terri attended Catholic School while growing up and remained close to her faith throughout her life.
In 1983, Terri met Michael Schiavo at Bucks County Community College and the two began dating. He was the first romantic interest Terri had.
The couple was engaged within a few months and married a year later at Terris church in Southampton, Pa. She was 21.
In 1986, Terri and Michael relocated to Pinellas County, Florida and her parents followed three months later.
In 1990, at the age of 26, Terri suffered a mysterious cardio-respiratory arrest for which no cause has ever been determined. She was diagnosed with hypoxic encephalopathy neurological injury caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. Terri was placed on a ventilator, but was soon able to breathe on her own and maintain vital function. She remained in a severely compromised neurological state and was provided a PEG tube to ensure the safe delivery of nourishment and hydration.
On March 31, 2005, Terri Schindler Schiavo died of marked dehydration following more than 13 days without nutrition or hydration under the order of Circuit Court Judge, George W. Greer of the Pinellas-Pascos Sixth Judicial Court. Terri was 41.
This thread, you recall, is a birthday tribute to Terri Schiavo. I can't help thinking if we were better committed to the principles you list here, Terri would be sitting by a sunny window at home, enjoying her days.
I have found more than this t'wit, BB.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"On January 11, 1983, Nancy Beth Cruzan, 25, suffered massive neurological injuries in an auto accident and was left severely disabled. After three weeks in a coma she progressed to a state in which she could ingest food. She was able to eat mashed potatoes, bananas, eggs and link sausage, and drink juice with her meals. Even though she could chew and swallow, a gastrostomy tube was inserted into her stomach to assure adequate nutritional intake. Whether she maintained her swallowing ability after the insertion of the tube is unknown, as no follow-up swallow study was done because it was thought this would distress Nancy's parents."
Cruzan, more than Quinlan, was the template for the execution of Terri. We might want to explore if further. (You can bet that George Felos did.) The "clear and convincing" standard of evidence that the patient wishes to be snuffed goes back to Cruzan. We remember how that worked in Terri's case -- ridiculous hearsay from a cheating, financially interested husband and two in-laws was "clear and convincing" to George Greer (but to nobody else over the mental age of six).
You bet. Wait until I post her parents quotes tomorrrow. In brief, it sounds like Nancy was no longer the perfect daughter they knew.
Actually, her father says "how can I murder my own daughter? I will have to live with it". That's a close paraphrase.
What I meant by that was, the standard was set by the Supreme Court in ruling against the Cruzans (IIRC) in their first suit to kill Nancy. The court said they hadn't presented clear and convincing evidence that she would be better off dead, so that became the standard. "Clear and convincing."
>> "...I will have to live with it"
Her father evidently couldn't live with it very long. He killed himself -- in 1996, I think, about five years after Nancy's death.
How can the Supreme Court over rule a probate judge who follows their own rules? I guess it's called "turned down without further comment".
Good, I want to see those.
We all understand that there are people who can't be troubled to undertake all that special care, even for their own child. But if they won't, or can't, do it themselves, at least let them send the patient to an appropriate care facility. What I can't figure out is people who go to court to have their child (or wife) put to death.
God bless the people who do put their own plans aside in order to care for a sick child or loved one.
"At the end of our lives, we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made or how many great things we have done. We will be judged by I was hungry and you gave me to eat. I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you took me in." -- Mother Teresa.
That is so sickening. As a parent, I can't imagine how any "parent" can do that to their own child.

At the moment it is 8 below zero here. Finally it is cooling off.
I was surprised to find today my heart is filled with hate, enlightened by this writer who finds all of my kind of the most vile of haters. Little puppies and kittens better watch out for me today!! I qualify as a plain old fashioned Catholic which is defined these days as a (gulp!) traditional!
Terri's Legacy must be getting to them.
..................................
In one case, the simmering anti-Semitism of the radical traditionalists may even have affected the thinking of a serial-killing terrorist. A new book by Maryanne Vollers, Lone Wolf: Eric Rudolph: Murder, Myth, and the Pursuit of an American Outlaw, suggests that Rudolph may have been influenced by radical traditionalism, in addition to his known ties to the neo-Nazi theology of Christian Identity.
The movement also may be gaining influence on the larger political scene. A case in point is that of Christopher Ferrara, leader of the American Catholic Lawyers Association. Ferrara, who writes for the anti-Semitic, radical traditionalist journal The Remnant, was the lawyer for the family of Terri Schiavo and a key player, along with Republican and Christian Right leaders, in getting Congress to pass a law to keep the severely brain-damaged woman alive. It was later overturned.

Snip...
Hart's criticisms, stated relatively mildly in his book, took on much more strident expression in his contribution to the pre-electoral Washington Monthly symposium. There, Hart described Bush as "a man who has taken the positions of an unshakable ideologue" on issues ranging from the Terri Schiavo case to supply-side economics. If conservatism is a "politics of reality," this President, wrote Hart, lives sheltered in delusion. No longer is the adjective "Wilsonian" sufficient to describe his disconnectedness from reality. Indeed, Bush's naïve belief in the universality of the human preference for freedom over tyranny makes "Woodrow Wilson look like Machiavelli" by comparison.
After Bush Is conservatism finished?
