I was lucky enough to spend time with Dr. Friedman on two occasions. Professionally, I don't think any one person had a greater impact on my life. Not only was he an intellectual giant, he was a gracious and kind person with a wonderful sense of humor. One of my students went to grad school in econ at the University of Chicago and saw him walking across campus. The student (with her charming honesty) approached him and said: "I thought you were dead!" He smiled and said: "I'm so happy you are wrong.", after which he talked with her on the quad for almost 15 minutes.

And that made more economic sense than Krugman.

Milton Friedman's bowel movements knew more about economics than Paul Krugman!

Friedman was NOT a conservative. He was a libertarian thinker. It is not at all impossible to be both.

Damn. What a loss. I love reading his works.
May his legacy of economic freedom thrive and those who are enlightened and invigorated by his works multiply exponentially.

I believe he called himself, at one point, an "anarcho-capitalist".

Friedman lived to a happy old age with his beloved wife. And, he leaves behind a great legacy.
Much more than will ever be said about certain other public figures who seek a "legacy."

The Dismal Science It's been called that because Thomas Malthus said that population growth would always ensure that man lived just above the subsistance level. Milton Friedman, on the other hand, made economics "alive" for students, instilling economic hope wherever a free market could take hold.

Sad passing of a brilliant man.

..."he was a gracious and kind person with a wonderful sense of humor."
That's what always struck me about him. In addition to his intellectual brilliance, he always seemed to radiate a kindness and 'just-plain-niceness' that I found touching.

They are really a vile group of people. I remember they celebrated Reagan's death as well.
