That is a great quote RM. Everyone has been saying Martinez has a good rating from the ACU.
I agree with the quote but wonder if you mean Martinez.
I don't know enough about him to know if he is moderate or what, but I do know he doesn't speak up much and doesn't give leadership in speaking up. So I don't understand why he would be a good spokesperson. Has he shown any talent for speaking up?
I just wasn't sure what you were referring to.

I posted the bylaws. The President chooses but the Republican National Committee can refuse his choice on a vote.

We need a strong, dynamic personality... to stand up to the Dems.

RNC Chairman decides what races get money and support. It's the PR people who go on TV. I rarely saw Mehlman on the tube, and I doubt Martinez will step up his appearances.

OOkay, how about this isn't a part-time job. He's a Senator, helllooo...

Didn't Chris Dodd pull the double-job act a couple of decades ago? It's not unprecedented.

Have you ever heard my senator, Mel Martinez talk?

Why, yes, I have heard him talk. I heard him talk all throughout the 2004 election when he campaigned. Hint: I'm in Florida as well.

My biggest problem is he is a sitting Senator and I know my two Senators are busy all the time.

"Senator Martinez is pro-life, and he strikes me as a good man. I don't agree with him everything (including how to handle illegal immigrants), but this is not a bad pick for RNC Chairman."

Well, it sounds like a done deal. I hope it all works out. Maybe we will be surprised. But him spouting all that immigration language that "it must be legal immigration", heck congress can make anything legal, like amnesty.

The hispanic vote is an issue though. We have to be careful here and not stupid. Principle can turn you into Captain Edward John Smith. Even Reagan said it was better to get half a loaf than no loaf at all. I don't have the answer here.

Just another attempt to pander to hispanics. Need someone who can give people a reason to vote Republican, and he'll help drive conservatives out.

The party of Lincoln has become a party of spineless wimpy RINOs.

"He's Cuban"

So what?

His ACU rating is high enough for most Republicans to be jealous

I have nothing against Mel Martinez at all except he is a sitting Senator. I know how hard my two Senators work and I think this is asking too much of a Senator. Is Bush telling us that he doesn't have anyone else?

"Far more qualified candidates in FL were passed up in favor of Mel."

Who? Were they available in '06?

Just starve the RNC for cash.

Heck, I haven't contributed to the RNC for two years, and I never will again if they don't represent my values.

I did read once that a FReeper had sent them pesos. That cracked me up.

Martinez is not a RINO! If you want to say a sitting Senator should not be head of RNC, then I agree but you are attacking someone who is pro-life and calling him a RINO. He stands with Coburn on cutting pork so are you going to call Dr. Coburn a RINO. He stands with Sen Inhofe on Armed Services so are you going to call Sen Inhofe a RINO.

So you and others need to know it off because Martinez is a Conservative. Did any of you actually read the bill on immigration because it is NOT amnesty?

It boggles my mind. I noticed the naysayers hit the thread but they are missing the point that he is a conservative but that has nothing to do with this. I don't think a sitting Senator should be head of RNC because it is a huge job and we have a lot of work to do to get ready for 2008!

Makes no sense to me.

Had to do some digging on the ACU site to get the "prelim" 2006 numbers. Finally found a page that has been tracking the 2006 votes, then a Florida zip code (32125 for Daytona Beach worked for me).

My take on Martinez; not too bad as long as you can ignore his pro-illegal immigrant stances. He also has the benefit of not losing a 2006 race (he ran in 2004)

Apparently Martinez will be a figurehead and fundraiser. The day-to-day management tasks will be handled by Robert M. (Mike) Duncan of Kentucky.
