Charlie Rangel: "Who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?" (..Said the Man From Harlem!!)
http://michellemalkin.com/archives/006337.htm ^

Posted on 11/09/2006 12:43:12 PM PST by WBL 1952

Charlie Rangel opens his mouth...and mocks the South: (hat tip: reader CRB)

“It’s not just committees — our influence within the House Democratic caucus will grow enormously,” Mr. Rangel said in an interview.

To that end, he sketched out an expansive federal agenda: Teaming up with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on gun control, passing new tax incentives for urban job programs, and redirecting federal money to New York in return for the outsize tax collections that the federal government makes here.

“Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?” Mr. Rangel said.

Basically it says a state can get very little beyond what it sends to DC from DC.

You make it sound like liberals plotting to avoid paying to redistribute wealth, their natural obsession.

I wouldn't mind this plan. Except you never send the money to D.C. to begin with.

I love all these complaints from basket-cases like NYC, having been bailed out repeatedly with federal money, taxed to death and still broke.

I doubt much will happen along these lines.

Boston...The only place in the nation I've been that I don't care to return to.

Yeah, those Boston yankee types are a bit, uh, cold. The city does have some interesting places to visit, though. Our #1 son just got his first real job out of law school, and bought a condo in Somerville. He loves riding the T and visiting other friends in the city. It would be great for a single person, or a couple with no kids, but I wouldn't want to have to raise a family in the city, though I have friends on our state homeschool network who LOVE living there.

Barbour would be a perfect candidate.

Southern, governor, connected with the Reagan legacy, friendly with the Bush clan, free of scandal as far as I know...

He doesn't cut John Edwards' stylish figure -- but he can match Hillary's...

I don't have time to look it up -- I posted a link earlier int he thread or you can go to the tax foundation and look it up.

NYC is booming and sends billions outside its borders.

The liberals of the northern states aren't plotting to redistribute wealth, they are plotting on keeping it in their states -- a move that would spell disaster for many red states.

'Tell your momanem I said Hey!'

My sister in law used to laugh every time I'd say that when our Mamas were still alive.

Well, we're looking at some property in Gulfport. There are a couple of lots less than a block from the beach. Each are about 3/4 of an acre; the one that's 125 feet from the service road off Hwy 90 is $165K, the one next to it, which is about 300' off the service road is $145K. Not too shabby because depending on how you site the house, you can get a fabulous view of the Gulf! There is another 1.5 acre lake front lot off a road in Gulfport North that is about $150K. THose are not outrageous, though I don't know what the prices in the area for lots were, pre-Katrina.

There are a couple of pieces of property over in Ocean Springs, too. One is 175' on a deep bayou leading to the gulf, is already bulkheaded, and is 130' deep. That property is $150K, and there are 3.5 acres not too far away with a bayou view, across the street from the water that is about $145K. Something like this would be great, because it's in a pretty good area for housing, and we could build a few houses to sell.

You can get spendy with lots in Gulfport, as well, if you want to. They're selling some 'estate' sized lots off Big Lake, 2.5 to 4.5 acres from $250K to $400K for the waterfront lots.

We had a lot down the street from us here in MA sell just recently for $195K. Corner lot, busy street, and now that they're putting up the house, almost NO yard. The prices on the coast look good to us.

I'm as big a baseball fan as anyone (go Cards!) but that's a pretty small sop considering the manifest misery and confinement of the big city. We live on five acres; I commute 73 miles to work two days a week. That distance was a conscious decision we made as a family - partly to live in the red part of one of the bluest states in the Union. I have nothing in common with the people of the huge cities, would be promptly rejected, and do not wish to live there.

My cousin LOVES Brooklyn, does not own a car AFAIK, and is actively involved in a leadership role with Dean and the Democrats. Brids of a feather...

I guess an unusually high % of African Americans want to live in Mississippi. Rangel simply shows his New Yorker elitist ignorance.

Mississippi is 36.3% African American

Total population 2,844,658

Black or 1,033,809 or 36.3%

Who the hell wants to live in New York? No offense to fellow NY freepers.

Judging by the number of NYers invading Central Florida, they don't even want to live there.
