Charlie Rangel opens his mouth...and mocks the South: (hat tip: reader CRB)
Its not just committees our influence within the House Democratic caucus will grow enormously, Mr. Rangel said in an interview.
To that end, he sketched out an expansive federal agenda: Teaming up with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on gun control, passing new tax incentives for urban job programs, and redirecting federal money to New York in return for the outsize tax collections that the federal government makes here.
Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi? Mr. Rangel said.
Here is a ton of stuff on state and federal taxes.

"There are no mountains in Mississippi,"
But we have some mighty big hills. See from Natchez to Brookhaven, and near McComb amd Magnolia.
And even more interesting...

What do the federal monies that go to MS and AL go toward? Is it Medicaid/Medicare/welfare? Defense contractors? Farmers? NASA? Military?
There is a lot of truth to what you say vis a vis the racist attitudes of the media.
Their"logic"is something to the effect of"you how how folksy and colorful Negroes are.Thats how it is in the ghetto, folks there can't help it.They cuss a lot cause its hard coming up in the hood.Ain't old Charlie a hoot sometimes. He's really telling it like it is from the street level, know what I'm sayin'?"
Here is the site where that Exxon sign was made:

Actually, no. Since at least 1/3 of the housing stock was either damaged or completely destroyed, the prices of the remaining houses went UP. Fortunately, for buyers, that initial exuberance has come down slightly. Sellers are finding that even though there is less housing, lots of folks have not returned to the coast because their jobs haven't returned. When the jobs start coming back, the housing will be more in demand.
That being said, the housing prices look fantastic to folks coming in from places like MA, where we're living right now. It's also a good deal for folks who can do all the work to fix up their own homes, since there are some that had been flooded and were gutted.
Contractors are few and far between, and those who are there are overloaded with work. Many of the subs evacuated and haven't returned, so it's hard to find workers. We're fortunate in that we can do all the work we need to do, and we have the equipment to do it. We had planned to put a large addition on our home here in MA, before SirKit decided to change careers. So we have the equipment and he has the knowledge and the workers (our youngest son, and I) to help him. The cities and counties are being more lenient about homeowners doing their own trades work, since there so few electricians and plumbers, but you still have to get the work inspected and signed off by the officials; fine with us.
Typical wimp from New York. Come down to Mississippi and see what happens to people who pop off at the mouth Charlie!
So he can suck up to the black voters. Why ELSE would he have an office there?
Some of it's pork and some of it's legit -- like loans to farmers and repair of highways and education. None of it is private sector, i.e. defense contractors. I do not believe it includes military bases, though I could be wrong.
I just looked up Miss. for 2004 -- the last year records seem to be kept. They get $1.56 back for every tax dollar they send to DC. Alabama gets back $1.71 for every dollar paid in taxes.
We get nowhere near our fair share of federal money because we send too much money to Washington. We send too much money to Washington because we earn more, and although the cost of living is much higher here, we pay more in taxes too. Cut taxed on the so-called rich, and we'd send less money to Washington, relative to the rest of the country. Period.
This is the basic line of the tax parity people.
I don't think the people of NY or THE city are swimming in a cess pool. They just don't understand the values and honor and patriotism of the citizens of Mississippi!
And you know this, how?
Maybe we'll get back the majority sooner than we thought...
Getting off to a great start as ways and means chairman, winning friends and influencing people, aincha, chuckie old fool?
Absolutely correct that a parity system is most fair.Residents of Mississippi and other states with a rural economic base as opposed to banking/commerce/other high wealth density bases obviously dont pay the same ratio of taxes. A farmer owning 400 acres of rich fertile land has a valuable although nonliquid asset difficult to tax.Percentages are one thing, I'd be curious to know the absolute dollars sent to MS as opposed to New York, etc. If oil/gas exploration just offshore becomes more feasable, timber prices continue to expand etc and some programs which regretably encourage children to have children to receive a bigger monthly check from the 'govment' are scaled back, you would probably see a better ratio. The decent people of Mississippi who do pay taxes are also fatigued watching able bodied people to do nothing but go to the mailbox monthly...you'd be surprised at the number of people that can help this state improve itself moving back home. Anyway...I appreciate the discussion!
