Charlie Rangel: "Who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?" (..Said the Man From Harlem!!)
http://michellemalkin.com/archives/006337.htm ^

Posted on 11/09/2006 12:43:12 PM PST by WBL 1952

Charlie Rangel opens his mouth...and mocks the South: (hat tip: reader CRB)

“It’s not just committees — our influence within the House Democratic caucus will grow enormously,” Mr. Rangel said in an interview.

To that end, he sketched out an expansive federal agenda: Teaming up with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on gun control, passing new tax incentives for urban job programs, and redirecting federal money to New York in return for the outsize tax collections that the federal government makes here.

“Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?” Mr. Rangel said.

"There are no mountains in Mississippi,"
But we have some mighty big hills. See from Natchez to Brookhaven, and near McComb amd Magnolia.

What do the federal monies that go to MS and AL go toward? Is it Medicaid/Medicare/welfare? Defense contractors? Farmers? NASA? Military?

There is a lot of truth to what you say vis a vis the racist attitudes of the media.
Their"logic"is something to the effect of"you how how folksy and colorful Negroes are.Thats how it is in the ghetto, folks there can't help it.They cuss a lot cause its hard coming up in the hood.Ain't old Charlie a hoot sometimes. He's really telling it like it is from the street level, know what I'm sayin'?"

We get nowhere near our fair share of federal money because we send too much money to Washington. We send too much money to Washington because we earn more, and although the cost of living is much higher here, we pay more in taxes too. Cut taxed on the so-called rich, and we'd send less money to Washington, relative to the rest of the country. Period.

Bloomberg will bankrupt this city - and this state - if he continues giving exhorbinant contract increases to unions. He got absolutely no concessions from the teachers - no movement to merit pay, no movement away from the tenure system, no longer hours. Nothing. He probably expects the state to pick up the tab with additional funding. But there's no such thing as a free lunch. And with Spitzer in charge in Albany, expect more of the same from the state, unless the state Senate can stop him. Sadly, I doubt the RINOs have the guts to do so.

Property must be a steal, post Katrina

Actually, no. Since at least 1/3 of the housing stock was either damaged or completely destroyed, the prices of the remaining houses went UP. Fortunately, for buyers, that initial exuberance has come down slightly. Sellers are finding that even though there is less housing, lots of folks have not returned to the coast because their jobs haven't returned. When the jobs start coming back, the housing will be more in demand.

That being said, the housing prices look fantastic to folks coming in from places like MA, where we're living right now. It's also a good deal for folks who can do all the work to fix up their own homes, since there are some that had been flooded and were gutted.

Contractors are few and far between, and those who are there are overloaded with work. Many of the subs evacuated and haven't returned, so it's hard to find workers. We're fortunate in that we can do all the work we need to do, and we have the equipment to do it. We had planned to put a large addition on our home here in MA, before SirKit decided to change careers. So we have the equipment and he has the knowledge and the workers (our youngest son, and I) to help him. The cities and counties are being more lenient about homeowners doing their own trades work, since there so few electricians and plumbers, but you still have to get the work inspected and signed off by the officials; fine with us.

Some of it's pork and some of it's legit -- like loans to farmers and repair of highways and education. None of it is private sector, i.e. defense contractors. I do not believe it includes military bases, though I could be wrong.

I just looked up Miss. for 2004 -- the last year records seem to be kept. They get $1.56 back for every tax dollar they send to DC. Alabama gets back $1.71 for every dollar paid in taxes.

This is the basic line of the tax parity people.

Yes the Ole Miss, Southern Miss, And Miss State Ladies are a million times better looking and better behaved and absolutely real people!

This is a scandal and Rangle should resign!
/s
It is to bad that Rangle is in any position to be a part of the future of this country. The people of Mississippi have been a class act after the devastation of Katrina. It shows you what people who value their family and fellow citizens more than their image can do.

I don't think the people of NY or THE city are swimming in a cess pool. They just don't understand the values and honor and patriotism of the citizens of Mississippi!

Absolutely correct that a parity system is most fair.Residents of Mississippi and other states with a rural economic base as opposed to banking/commerce/other high wealth density bases obviously dont pay the same ratio of taxes. A farmer owning 400 acres of rich fertile land has a valuable although nonliquid asset difficult to tax.Percentages are one thing, I'd be curious to know the absolute dollars sent to MS as opposed to New York, etc. If oil/gas exploration just offshore becomes more feasable, timber prices continue to expand etc and some programs which regretably encourage children to have children to receive a bigger monthly check from the 'govment' are scaled back, you would probably see a better ratio. The decent people of Mississippi who do pay taxes are also fatigued watching able bodied people to do nothing but go to the mailbox monthly...you'd be surprised at the number of people that can help this state improve itself moving back home. Anyway...I appreciate the discussion!

My only point is you can't both complain about New York not getting its fair share of federal funds and then vote to increase taxes on the so-called rich. Doing so will only increase what some Canadians sometimes call the "fiscal imbalance" up there (when refering to Quebec (perceived), Ontario and Alberta paying more than they get back from Ottawa). The Democrats' tax hike on the so-called rich will cause New York to get even less back relative to the rest of the states.

I'm not the one complaining that New York doesn't get its fair share of federal funds - Charlie Rangel is. And he'll be the first to want to "rollback" tax cuts for the so-called rich. I am sick of that phrase - the tax man isn't Wal*Mart. A rollback of tax cuts is a tax increase. Period.

I love this reply: From the Coast to the Delta to the Pinebelt to the Hills and across Mississippi, there is beauty in every city, charity in every heart, love in every church, and majesty in every countryside. When I travel this state I see it in the resolute handshakes, the hospitable smiles, and the sincere prayers of our neighbors: we love Mississippi and we are proud and happy to live here,” Pickering said. Pickering concluded, “Last year, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Coast. We have been working hard not only to rebuild our own homes and communities, but also to repair and protect the network of refineries, pipelines, and transmission grids that supply energy, gas, and oil to the rest of the country, including New York. If Mr. Rangel believes those efforts required more than our fair share of federal money, he is welcome to send that energy back to our state and find an alternative supply... Go get your own gas, Chuckles.
