The haunts in the house

By ROBYN STUBBS, 24 HOURS

Even after everyone else has left for the evening, Marisa Ferrari senses she's not alone in Burnaby's historic Ceperley House.

Now the site of the Burnaby Art Gallery, the ghostly spirits of the house's former residents, including a monk, a caretaker and a little blonde girl, have all been said to roam the gallery halls. But the strongest spirit arguably belongs to the original 19th century owner, Mrs. Grace Ceperley.

Whatever - or whoever - it is, there are some very strange things going on, says Ferrari - items are misplaced overnight, motion sensors go off when no one's there, loud bangs can be heard coming from upstairs after the gallery has closed and several visitors have reported seeing ghostly figures.

So what do you do when you think you have a ghost? Call a ghost hunter.

"Ghosts might just be something quite normal, but still not understood," offers Jan Gregory, founder of Vancouver Paranormal, which conducts about 20 ghost investigations per year using electromagnetic equipment, recordings and photographs.

"We get people telling us their stove burners will turn on and off by themselves, lights will flicker when they enter a room. They'll get infestations of weird bugs, and their toilets will back up for no reason," explains Gregory.

They might also see weird lights, shapes of shadowy things, and strange smoke moving from room to room. Strange noised may also be heard.

"There's no science to ghost hunting - you try to eliminate as many ghostly-caused effects as you can, like double exposures. We try to do things as critically as we can, but we have been exposed to really strange things," she says.

According to a recent Ipsos Reid poll, nearly half of Canadians believe in ghosts, 18 per cent say they have been in the presence of ghosts, and nine per cent say they've lived in a haunted house.

As for the Ceperley House investigation, several images depicting a ghost-like presence around the house have been captured - take a look at www.horrorseek.com.

That's because all the dead people are lining to vote for the Democrats.

A few years ago my wife and I visited San Antonio where
I became convinced I fought, and died, as one of the
defenders of the Alamo....I fell just outside the North Wall, run down by a Mexican lancer, while trying to escape the carnage within. I was ill on March 6th, and had been for the previous 4 days. From the hospital located in the second story of the convento, I fired at the advancing Mexican troops until my ammo was exhausted. I, and two other defenders, then leapt from the second floor window and ran along the roof of the long barracks, with the battle raging below us, to the north wall, now free of Mexican troops (they were all inside the compound by now).
After jumping from the north wall, we ran east, towards the Gonzales road, where we were ridden down by lancers. I was the last to die.....

Signed,
John Kerry
Hero
Reporting for Duty......

If you were really John Kerry... you would have survived, filmed it, received 3 Purple Hearts and negotiated with Santa Ana during it.

What I find curious, is why all these centuries old ghosts know so much about electrical appliances. Maybe one of them can set the clock on my VCR.

Maybe they spend time watching the living occupants use those appliances, and they learn a thing or two :-)
