RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin was joking and not condoning rape when he commented about the virility of Israeli President Moshev Katsav, whom police suspect of raping female employees, the Kremlin said today.
Unaware a microphone was switched on during talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Mr Putin called Mr Katsav a "mighty guy" and said: "Raped 10 women! I would never have expected that from him. He surprised us all. We all envy him."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Mr Putin had made the comments on Wednesday and said Russian humour did not always travel well across linguistic borders.
"It was a joke which did not have anything to do with the official part of the talks ... (and) was not addressed to journalists," Mr Peskov said.
"These words should in no way be interpreted as President Putin approving the possibility of this sort of crime. He takes a very negative view of that sort of crime," said Mr Peskov.
"It is not always possible to translate a Russian joke into another language in such a way that you convey its complete meaning."
Mr Peskov, accompanying Putin at a European Union summit in Finland, said Mr Katsav had not been convicted of any offence.

I think its funny and it was a joke. Who died and made MSM political correctness police?
This is like the old story about a politican, I think it was LBJ, comparing rape to rainy days in west Texas.
"sometimes you just relax and enjoy it".
As I recall there was a tempest in a Teapot for two, three days, but that was only allowed because LBJ was supposedly a conservative Democrat, as opposed to a Republican who would have gotten the full Quayle, being reminded of it at every press occurance for ever after.
HAHAA, he can get it up to rape 10 women....I don't get it.
Russia - 'What a country'. Putin must have some Tatar in him. Hey, maybe the Mongols motorcycle gang can recruit Putin as an honorary member.
Maybe Borat should have been from Russia. ;)
speechless
Ah ha! No wonder the Russian KGB Pres and Comrade Clintoon are cozy.
I've been to Russia, and this made me laugh, because you are SPOT ON! :) :) Next to the average Russian, Yakov Smirnov was a comic genius. Never heard of him? I ain't surprised. He was as funny as a Stalin purge. He was as funny as a Russian
It's a matter of context. Sarcasm runs so deep in Russian humor it's hard to explain, you might be trapped by a Russian who goes on a 3 minute build up for a punchline, and the punchline is a sarcastic oneliner. But that is the best type of joke a Russian can entertain another Russian with in their view.
(I'm posting this for intellectual discussion) One of the best known russian jokes:
A peasant drove his cart next to a cemetery. He noticed, on one of the graves, a man who seemed to be engaged in a sexual act with two naked girls.
"Is one not enough for you?" the peasant shouted. "Why won't you give me one?"
"To give you!" the man answered. "Take a shovel and dig out for yourself as many as you like."
Or actually rape a woman like a certain X US president...
Exactly!
Who is a "frickin' brute"? Moshe Katsav?
"Say hello to your President. What a mighty man he turns out to be! He raped ten women. I would never have expected this from him. He surprised us all. We all envy him."
On the chest of a barmaid in Sale
were tattooed the prices of ale.
And on her behind,
for the sake of the blind,
was the same information in Braille.
Putins's word were:
- Your president surprised us!
- He can handle ten woman!
no words about rape.
He said exactly "Raped" - iznasiloval.. not spravilsa "handle"
Why you are all discussing here russian humor? There is no any connection between Putin & russian humor... It's true that humor in russia have a huge part of sarcasm, but it just not about our president.. everything he said was very rude.
An old russian joke: Armenian old man is dying and his last words were "take care about jews".
or this one?
Ha,ha! Is joke, no? I make funny, yes? Laugh or I have you shot!
It is time for Gary Kasparov (fierce Putin critic) to take over Russia.
Well, putin himself is a bad joke, actually.
