Let's keep pounding this into the ground. Maybe then we'll get to the bottom of it.
Fox is carrying on like this is another Indonesian earthquake, and sounding more and more disappointed tha tthere is no tsunami to report.
Let's get on with Fox News Sunday...

Wow, a big one. I could hear it coming several seconds before it hit. I ran to the front door as it sounded like a train was about to hit me. It fairly shook up the house and knocked things off the shelves. Didn't break anything here but next door at my daughters it broke some vases and flower pots etc. Nothing of great concern though. After shock was also pretty heavy. The Electric just now came back on so I'm late on this thread as my computer was down. No one hurt on Maui that I have heard about. It hit the big island harder than us on Maui. On top of all else there is a big storm coming from the N. west and flash flood warnings are out for most of the islands. As of right now the weather is partly cloudy and pretty warm out. Will let you know as things get back to normal here. Aloha fishhawk

I live in Kailua-Kona. An amazing rumbling sound that grew over 10-15 seconds and then the house shook violently for what felt like nearly two minutes. Quite a shaker, it knocked down quite a bit of stuff in the house.
No visible structural damage apparent in the streets surrounding my place.

I just heard on Fox that Hawaii's governor has declared a state of disaster. WHAT disaster??? Buildings are standing, no report of deaths or widespread injuries. Power is out in places but its expected to be up by morning. For heaven's sake, Buffalo is in worse shape!

They are driving me nuts on FoxNews Channel by always saying "The Big Island."
Why not give our kids a geography lessons?
Here is a map with actual names of the islands and links for each.

I have to wonder if the nuclear test by N. Korea could have triggered the quake.

When was the last big quake in Hawaii anyway? I've never heard of one. Do modern building codes there require any earthquake reinforcement whatsoever in new construction? Don't know myself, just wondering. Not a Hawaii expert, but my wife grew up there. So I know a little about it.
Next to human life, I'm most worried about the Keck telescope. This can't be good for a giant precision instrument like that.

Check out the USGS earthquake website. Now Alaska is having small earthquakes 23:58 hours 2.9 and at 00:22 3.2 . Not huge ones but geeshhh....

They're saying that this 6.6 magnitude quake is the largest quake in Hawaii since 1989. There are injuries reported but so far, no reports of casualties. The most recent aftershock occurred at 11:45 a.m. local time, it was 2.7, a micro quake. About an hour earlier, there was a light aftershock, at 4.4 magnitude.

Granted, my Geology background's a bit rusty, being nearly 2 decades behind me, but is Seismic activity of this nature 'normal' for the Islands? Granted there is tremendous volcanic activity, but in the case of Hawaii, its located over a 'Hot Spot.' The volcanism is not directly associated with plate intersection (friction). And its type of rock structures are generally stable, are they not?!

MECO has restored power on Maui (with only a few pockets still out).
The Department of Water Supply and the Department of Public Works & Environmental Management Wastewater Reclamation Division have reported all systems are operational.
Kahului Airport is open, with all airlines running normally except all United Airlines flights have been cancelled for the remainder of today, but all United passengers have been re-booked on other United flights.

Hi All,
We landed in Honolulu at @ 12:00 pm yesterday and waited 3 hours in the plane for the stairs to arrive so we could climb down.
Power was restored here in Waimanalo at 12:30 am the next day (this morning).
Our son was home when the first quake hit. He said the house was really rocking and rolling.
So glad there were no fatalities.
