And again, your personal entertainment at being able to fly around potential terrorist targets of national importance is not some huge assault on liberty and not too much to give up for protecting those icons. Buy a ticket if you want to see it. If you want to fly, do it elsewhere. Not a huge burden on liberty despite your wish to zoom the Statue.

So every commercial airliner doing the "Potomac River Approach" to Dulles is to be perceived as a terrorist threat to the Pentagon?

I believe that is true. Passengers are not allowed to stand during the last 30 minutes of a flight into Dulles and for a while, there was an air marshall on every flight into Washington. I am not sure if those restrictions have been lifted. If so, they shouldn't have been in my opinion.

BTW, if you want to see a real version of losing liberty, the bag searches were it. Doing 5 minutes of research would have told you which stations weren't going to search bags - I lived in Manhattan's 'nice ghetto' in Inwood, and never saw so much as a cop in the station. I only got searched in Midtown. The way that NY conducted the bag searches were only possibly useful in catching out-of-town drug dealers or letting the police search the bags of law-abiding citizens.

Like many other things, it was for show and not terrorism protection. I am sort of in favor of the El Al approach of profiling.

"Unless the plane was somehow damaged, there shouldn't have been any fuel problems - the plane had just taken off from Teterboro about 15 minutes before the crash."

In 2002 the last Stratoliner in existance, after a 6 year restoration by volunteers at Boeing, took off in Seatle. The pilot began the flight under the impression that they had two hours of fuel aboard. The unique antique airliner ran out of gas after about 45 minutes and ditched in the bay.

" I do not consider that a huge imposition leading to the destruction of our glorious nation. "

Horrors ! The nation will fall if the copper lady loses her face ! ( Is that like the Ravens at the Tower of London or the monkeys on Gibraltar ? )

Since your restrictions offer NO protection whatsoever without your Phalanxes to back them up, and installation of these will not happen - Just what would you have really accomplished except to take away our liberty ?

BTW, will your tourist planes have on board security also, with secured cabins ?

I have nothing more to say to you. Your personal entertainment and love for the idol of "GA" is more important than national icons. You aren't funny.

I will say this. If anybody can get in a private plane and zoom around national symbols at will and without restriction...then there is nothing there to stop a terrorist. And someday they will take advantage of that for multiple symbolic attacks. When that happens...no amount of lobbying will protect "GA" and it will be HEAVILY restricted from then on out no matter how much you dismiss the Statue of Liberty "losing its face" as nothing major. You will be laughing about the Statue of Liberty's face while permanently grounded.

I hope I am proven wrong.

It can make you anxious, no doubt, but there are plenty of things in NYC to be anxious about every day, that have nothing to do with terrorism.

I come across as very harsh on people who assume it's terrorists everytime something happens, and I probably shouldn't be, but it bugs me because I see it as a little victory by the terrorists - if they can still spook people five years after the fact, then they've accomplished some of what they wanted to do. The reality is, you have more to fear stepping off a curb in NYC from a foreign taxi driver than you do from a foreign terrorist.

It's not just people being afraid everytime something happens, at times the media preys on those people, and it's sickening that they do that. Those folks have enough problems in their lives without the media trying to scare them.

A whole lot of buildings are not protected by vehicles and the bombs they can carry. I suspect that the wackjob muzzies will be able to set off hundreds of car bombs and it won't have you or a whole lot of other folks hollerin' for any significant restrictions in your travel by car, but one terrorist incident with a light plane and Katie bar the door. Tell me my FRiend, how many times has a small aircraft crashed into a building with terrible destruction and great loss of life and damage to the national psychi? Why the rush for more regulation when the bodies in this unfortunate accident haven't even cooled? A whole lot more folks die on the highways because of careless and dangerous drivers. You're tryin' to regulate common sense and sanity...it can't be done.

I can understand why pilots will have these restricions placed on them, after all they're just a bunch of rich happy go lucky playboys, who cares about that bunch of narcistic jerks, restrict em, tax em, lower em back to the level of the regular Joe.

I got news for you, judging by your screen name I'll bet you make a whole lot more money than me and a whole lot of other pilots. Most of us *are* regular Joes tryin' to make it all work in an increasingly hostile environment. Flying's a huge part of my life and who I am, I make huge compromises and sacrifices to do it, in a monetary way and in a regulatory way too. But it also gives me as an American an unbelievable amount of freedom that most folks will never experience or understand. I can go jump in my plane and in an hour be glassing an elk in the middle of nowhere. These sorts of things are uniquely American in this increasingly restrictive world we live in, and you can be damn sure that these unique things are at the top of the terrorists list for destruction. Why do any of us (especially here!) want to grant them that satisfaction?

Constantly worrying about the hundreds of ways you can meet your maker is no way to live my FRiend. You're really asking to take another incremental step down the road to a nanny state, and you're also helping the terrorists win their little Jihad too. Stay brave, stay free.

yes, and we have all kinds of regulations on driving. I'd like to go 100MPH, maybe I'd like to speed past a school, etc. I can't.

99% of where private pilots go will be unaffected by this. but something is not right about this incident - and our enemies are watching. the same way our enemies watched and knew that the holes in pre-9/11 aviation security could allow them to pull of those hijackings, they saw what happened today.

say what? nobody in manhattan spends any time worrying about terrorism?

then why was everyone quite concerend about what this incident was really all about today. don't tell me that no one in manhattan is worried about terrorism. tune into some talk radio and see what NYers saying, what they felt today when this happened, in the first couple of hours before things cleared up.

Been getting info on this in bits and pieces since it happened. Terrible--thoughts to Corey's family, friends and teammates(he was a journeyman, playing for 7 teams in his 12-year career, beginning in the strike season '95, when he crossed the picket lines). I have high regard for him if for no other reason.
Ironic that games are being played tonight in 2 cities where he played(would have been 2 if not for rain in NYC).

In reading your post I have this tidbit for you. I'm in the post office yesterday to get some stamps. With the Mon. holiday it was very busy(stupid me for going then). While I was waiting, before I left cause I couldn't wait anymore, I noticed a couple of people leaving multiple boxes to ship out. They literally dropped the boxes at the counter AND LEFT!!!!!!!
How does anybody know if there were bombs in those boxes, or anything else that shouldn't be.

how do you take off from Teterboro, 10 mi from NYC and run out of gas 15 minutes later? as I hear the news, his flight instructor was with him .. when I took flying lessons years ago, that was the first thing our flight instructor had us do in a long checklist of preparation before putting the key in the ignition. just doesn't make sense.

I seem to remember a recent incident where some goofball with his feet on backwards shook the tail off an Airbus resulting in it raining down on a New York neighborhood. Don't recall you suggesting restrictions on airliner flight paths or suggesting closing down La Guardia.

Obviously, we should preempt the terrosists by restricting everything that they might posssibly use to attack us. Let's just go ahead and do their job for them...I can see I'm getting nowhere here.

Have a safe day.

The post-911 world impinges on people returning to a pre-911 life. Soldiers are off fighting terrorists somewhere and we are safe again behind the oceans and can go on like it never happened. Thinking about it is a downer and interferes with stuff we like to do.

We can either unify behind the President and present a united front for our security or we can undercut the President for short-term political gain...easy choice...political gain as we are safe behind the oceans.

We can either profile for likely terrorists or we can feel good about ourselves and search grandma and Medal of Honor winners....easy choice....feeling good about ourselves since we are safe beyond the oceans.

Restricted airspace around potential terrorist targets or flying wherever the hell we want because we like it....easy choice...we like what we like and we are safe behind the oceans.

Pretty wild times we live in.

None of it makes sense to me either. I've never flown a plane, but I would think fueling the plane would be the first thing to do before doing a visual inspection of the aircraft before setting down in the pilot seat and putting the key in the ignition.

In those situations where there is a flight instructor "along for the ride", I've read from student pilots who've blogged their first flight experiences have said that the flight instructor will usually take control of the plane if it's in imminent danger for various reasons.

The only people I saw foaming at the mouth about a terrorist attack today were the MSM. Seemed they were spoiling for it.
